NYC: VICTORIA SHAW "UNDER THE COVERS" WITH SPECIAL GUEST A A A RAMIN KARIMLOO & CHELY WRIGHT
Hosted by award winning songwriter Victoria Shaw, Under The Covers has become a favorite recurring highlight at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080 - http://www.birdlandjazz.com/ ), featuring a wide variety of top-selling songwriters and musical acts from across the pop, rock and country worlds, and offering intimate acoustic performances of huge hit songs - along with the little-known stories behind them. This event on Sunday, December 7th at 7:00 pm is part of the Broadway at Birdland concert series. Victoria's very special guests will be Ramin Karimloo, the Tony-nominated Jean Valjean in the current Broadway production of Les Miserables, and platinum selling recording artist Chely Wright. In the world of theatrical performers, Ramin Karimloo is known as one of the most formidable talents in the industry. Heralded for his portrayal of leading roles Jean Valjean in Les Miserables and the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera, Karimloo is a musical force unlike any other. In fact, it was his unbridaled reputation that led to his performance in the recent Oscar tribute to Les Miserables. Iranian-born, Canadian actor/singer Ramin is recognized as the favorite leading man to perform in London's West End Musical Theatre by Whats On Stage. Ramin has played starring roles in both of the West End's longest running musicals; Jean Valjean, Enjolras and Marius in Les Miserables and the Phantom and Raoul in The Phantom of the Opera. Earlier this year Ramin played The Phantom for three performances alongside Love Never Dies co-star Sierra Boggess in the unique "25th Anniversary Production of The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall," that was streamed live to cinemas across the world, providing an even larger stage for this theatrical superstar's talent. Platinum selling recording artist Chely Wright as had 8 top ten recordson the Billboard charts, multiple music awards and #1 music videos. She has recently added "author" to her resume with her heart felt, honest biography "Wish Me Away," which chronicles her journey as the first major country music artist to reveal that she's gay. Victoria Shaw is a pop/ country songwriter responsible for over 65 million cd sales! As a singer, she had the great opportunity to open for Garth Brooks in the historic 1997 Central Park concert. Victoria also wrote one of Garth's biggest hits of all-time, "The River." The two-time Emmy Award-winning composer also wrote "I Love The Way You Love Me" for John Michael Montgomery and "Nobody Wants To Be Lonely" for Ricky Martin and Christina Aguilera. Her songs have been recorded by Olivia Newton John, Boyzone, Faith Hill, LeAnn Rimes, Reba McEntyre, Tricia Yearwood, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Michael McDonald. She co-produced the debut cd for Lady Antebellum, which went gold, thanks to two hit singles, and was nominated for two Grammy Awards. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: ARTURO O'FARRILL AFRO LATIN JAZZ ORCHESTRA SUNDAYS
Grammy Award winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill brings his Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra to BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Sundays at 9:00 & 11:00pm. Called the leader of the "first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz", O'Farrill was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte. The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra is the resident large format ensemble of the nonprofit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) founded by Arturo O'Farrill in 2007 and dedicated to preserving the music and heritage of big band Latin jazz, supporting its performance for new audiences, and educating young people in the understanding and performance of this important cultural treasure. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: PAT METHENY UNITY GROUP KIN - WORLD TOUR FINALE
The Pat Metheny Unity Group Kin (Pat Metheny, Chris Potter, Ben Williams, Antonio Sanchez and Giulio Carmassi) will hold a "Special Homecoming Event Celebrating The 150-City World Tour" at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592 - http://www.bluenote.net/ ) on Tuesday through Sunday, December 2nd through 7th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. The year 2013 has been a banner one for Pat Metheny. After being awarded his 20th Grammy, for Unity Band, and the release of his critically acclaimed recording of Tap: John Zorn's Book of Angels, Vol. 20, Metheny received word that the readers of DownBeat magazine had voted to induct him into its Hall of Fame. Not only is Metheny the youngest member, but he is also only the fourth jazz guitarist to be chosen for that honor, joining Charlie Christian, Django Reinhardt, and Wes Montgomery. The coming year promises to be equally exciting. There is a $40-$75 cover.
