HERE & THERE - PART I - BLOG EDITION

HERE & THERE - PART I

This is our second "beta" WEEKEND EDITION issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE and in case you missed our announcement in Monday's issue, the Thursday newsletter only includes the Friday, Saturday & Sunday events where guest performers are featured, ie THE AFTER PARTY, SALON and the radio show EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN, since, often guests aren't lined up before mid-week. Also included will be all events that are running ads on the website, plus, occasionally a news of a special event we wish to call attention to.
In the Monday issue, we include all possible new events not published in the newsletter before for (if space allows) the next three weeks. The items are then transferred to the THE CABARET EVENT LISTINGS on the website. We also include all events currently advertised on the website, cabaret organization events, benefits & festivals, plus events presented by members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE offering discounts to other members.
By moving nearly all the listings to the Monday edition, the HERE & THERE sections on the WEEKEND EDITION have been expanded to include more news items, and when appropriate, reviews/reports of shows seen in the past 7 days. This is still in the test (beta) stage, so please let me have your comments and suggestions.

You may notice another change today: shortened URLs (website addresses), especially those really long ones that won't break at the end of a line, meaning a big space before the next line. This is in test as well, and has not yet been implemented on all URLs in this issue.

We've been selling a lot of tickets to our 20th ANNIVERSARY GALA on Tuesday, July 13th at 7:00 pm at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER, NYC. This 2-hour event will feature 20 performers doing 20 numbers! I will be the MC of the show, with Multi-Award winner Tracy Stark serving as musical director.
Already booked to perform in the show: Esther Beckman, Lucille Carr-Kaffashan, Suzanne Carrico, Jill Cohen, Hector Coris, Booth Daniels, Baby Jane Dexter, Tim Di Pasqua, Terese Fischer, Sidney Myer, Marcus Simeone, Maureen Taylor and Jim VanSlyke. More performers to be announced shortly. Unfortunately, our good friend (and ultimate source for advice) Sue Matsuki had to drop out of the show - she will be off on a 3 week trip to Alaska (her husband is in the travel business, and its a free-be). I had a great speech prepared, too! As with all live entertainment events, performers are subject to change without notice.

Jim Van Slyke, who will be appearing in our 20th Anniversary Gala on July 13th, is off to California this weekend, appearing at THE RRAZZ ROOM in San Francisco on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm and then on Tuesday, June 15th at CATALINA BAR & GRILL in Los Angeles. Folks in San Francisco are in for a special treat: Jim's show is a tribute to the songs of Neil Sedaka, and the singer/songwriter himself will be a special guest as part of Jim's show!

Why do we have membership renewal time in July? Look at the ADVERTISERSpage on the website and you will see why. Instead of the normal 10 to 15 banners running, there is just ONE paid banner on the website. There is one SUPER SIDE-BAR ad, one SUPER HOME-PAGE SIDE-BAR ad, and just two regular HOME-PAGE SIDE-BAR ads (one of which expired this weekend). And all of these ads were paid for some weeks ago - and the funds already spent. And it looks like it will only get worse for the next 2 1/2 months!
So, right now we need your ads, we need your memberships, we need your donations, we need your support! Quite frankly, I saw this developing two months ago as the economy continued to collapse, and more folks find themselves out of work, (4.5 million unemployed and 456,000 folks newly applied for unemployment benefits last week!)
We've cut our membership rates to as low as $5 for a sustaining membership! GOLD membership was $75, now it's $50. Crystal was $250, now it's $100. We've cut our banner ad rates (banners no longer have a $10 premium on each of the first 2 weeks), and right now we're offering SUPERSIZE BANNERS at the REGULAR SIZE price - a savings of $20 per week (3 week minimum). This makes memberships and advertising more affordable to performers, but if course means less income for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. Information on Membership and Advertising is below in the next section.

We've passed the 100 mark in members for 2010-2011, for which we are very appreciative. Please keep in mind that 35 of this count are free extensions of 2009-2010 memberships which we gave to folks who signed up last year to our CABARET FOR SENIORS program - since discontinued. Those that joined were promised this extension (which turned out to cost us about $1200 in income for 2010-2011, but a promise is a promise).
ALL 2009-2010 memberships will expire on July 5th, which is less than 4 weeks away. And you can join for as little as $5 today, and upgrade to any level at any time with complete credit in order to get additional benefits. Please note, for memberships less than $20 we ask that you use PayPal and a credit/debit card - my bank frowns on too many small check deposits. Any amount is truly appreciated!

There's a rumor going around that the TONY AWARDS will be presented this Sunday, June 13th. The "buzz" this year has been more of a hum. I'm personally far more excited about the BROADWAY BY THE YEAR show on Monday, the 14th at THE TOWN HALL - the show will feature one song from one show, for each year between 1990 and 2010. The last two decades of Broadway's musicals will be represented featuring one great contemporary hit song from such shows as Ragtime, Next to Normal, The Producers, Aspects of Love, Assassins, Rent, Kiss of the Spider Woman,Jersey Boys, Wicked, Rent, The Secret Garden and Smokey Joe's Cafe. My pal Daniel and I will be there (as we have been for every show in this year's series). Details in the listings below - but I advise you get your ticker order in today. With some extra theater-loving folks in town for the TONYS on Sunday, this show will probably sell out (its too early for me to call THE TOWN HALL to check before "press time")
