NYC: JULLIARD JAZZ BRUNCH AT THE BLUE NOTE

Juilliard Jazz, under the directorship of Wynton Marsalis, will perform at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Sunday, March 15th with performances at 11:30 am and 1:30 pm as part of the Blue Note's Sunday Jazz Brunch series. Two small ensembles (Ensemble C and Ensemble D), will perform. They will be presenting music by bassists Charles Mingus and John Kirby, pianist Thelonius Monk and music associated with drummer Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers among others. Coached by pianist Elio Villafranca and guitarist Rodney Jones respectively, these gifted students study in a community steeped in a generosity of spirit and love of swing and the blues aesthetic. Therefore, they promise to share a joyous expression of their love of this music with every ear. As one of the most selective programs in the world, The Juilliard School's Jazz Studies Department, focuses students on the Jazz continuum and its American vernacular roots. Recent alumni include trombonists Michael Dease and Ryan Kerbele; pianists, Jonathan Baptiste, Kris Bowers and Aaron Diehl, trumpeters Etienne Charles and Brandon Lee; and drummer Ulysses Owens. Juilliard Jazz regularly performs at New York venues including Lincoln Center, and Dizzy's Club. Guests this academic year include saxophonists Todd Williams. Victor Goines, Charles McPherson, Ted Nash; trumpeters Jon Faddis and Valery Ponomarev; bassist Chuck Israels; and clarinetist Dr. Michael White. There is a $29.50 cover **Price includes brunch, music and a drink.**

TORONTO: SUNDAY BRUNCH WITH PATRICK HEWAN
MARCH IS CABARET MONTH

Pianist, composer/ lyricist/ librettist/ comic Eli Pasic will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Sundays in March from 12-noon to 3:00 pm as part of the clubs Sunday Brunch series. Patrick Hewan is a rising star in the Toronto Jazz scene whose energetic virtuosic playing captivates and moves his audiences. He draws on the vast vocabulary of the legendary jazz pianists who came before him and adds his own spirit and passion to create a unique sound and style. Drawing heavily on influences such as: Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Hiromi Uehara, Oscar Peterson, and Phineas Newborn while studying under the tutelage of legendary pianists such as Mark Eisenman, Brian Dickinson, Richard Whiteman, Robi Botos, and Hilario Duran it's no secret where Patrick developed his unique, high-octane style that still clearly adheres to the art forms tradition. Patrick began studying classical piano at the age of four and was later introduced to the saxophone where he developed a great love for jazz music. His education includes York University and Humber College and he is a recipient of the Berklee World Tour Scholarship for both sax and piano. There is a $5 cover.
