NYC: DENA DEROSE TRIO WITH SPECIAL GUEST JEREMY PELT

The Dena DeRose Trio with Dena Derose (piano/vocals), Martin Wind (bass), and Matt Wilson (drums) along with Jeremy Pelt (trumpet) will perform at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080 - ) on Thursday through Saturday, January 22nd through 24th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. It's no small thing to be called "The most creative and compelling singer-pianist since Shirley Horn," but that's how Joel Siegel, Washington City Paper, described Dena DeRose. It is with great pleasure that HighNote Records welcomes Dena to their roster with her label debut recording "We Won't Forget You... An Homage To Shirley Horn" which features the understated, swinging side of the late, great Horn. As this year would have been Ms. Horn's 80th birthday, it seems only appropriate for DeRose, also a triple threat vocalist, pianist, and arranger, to pay tribute to one of her major idols. Boasting an imaginative set list of some lesser recorded gems and varied use of the instrumental colors available, Dena DeRose's first release on HighNote is jazz singing and playing of the highest order. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: BLUE NOTE DOUBLE FEATURE: PAT MARTINO ORGAN TRIO & LARRY CORYELL / VIC JURIS DUO

The Pat Martino Organ Trio and The Larry Coryell / Vic Juris Duo will perform in "Double Feature: format at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Tuesday through Sunday, January 20th through 25th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. One of the greatest guitarists in jazz, Martino got his start on the "chitlin' circuit" in the 1960s with organ groups led by Richard "Groove" Holmes, Jack McDuff, Don Patterson, Trudy Pitts and Charles Earland. Having made a full and remarkable recovery from a life-threatening illness in the 1980's that caused him to forget how to play the guitar, Martino relearned by listening to his own early recordings and has re-emerged as a veteran presence on the jazz scene. Today Martino lives in his native Philadelphia and his playing is as fiery and technically brilliant as ever. One of the world's acknowledged guitar masters, Larry Coryell is among the most prominent pioneers of jazz-rock fusion. A true musical polyglot, he's equally capable of shredding screeching rock licks and delivering delicate acoustic gems. He has toured or recorded with virtually every major figure in the jazz world, including Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, Chick Corea, Sonny Rollins, Pat Metheny, Gary Burton, and Charles Mingus. Coryell made his debut as a leader in the mid-'60s, blending elements of rock, jazz, and Eastern music with his band The Eleventh House. He unplugged in the mid-'70s and produced a large volume of acoustic music, much of it in duo and trio settings with artists like Emily Remler, John Scofield, Joe Beck, Steve Khan, and John McLaughlin. He returned to the electric sound in the mid-'80s with a guitar power trio featuring McLaughlin and Paco de Lucea. Forever an innovator, he continues to cross boundaries of style and genre with his music. There is a $20-$35 cover.

NYC: PAPO VAZQUEZ MIGHTY PIRATES TROUBADOURS AT DIZZY'S

NEA Latino Master Papo Vazquez and the Mighty Pirates Troubadours perform at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Wednesday & Thursday, January 21st & 22nd with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Vazquez is a visionary composer, trombonist, singer, and percussionist, whose eclectic output includes jazz, Afro-Caribbean, classical, and a wide spectrum of Latin music - sometimes performed individually, and sometimes in combination. This diverse, often theatrical repertoire is brought to life by the Mighty Pirates Troubadours band (with Papo Vazquez, trombone/leader; Willie Williams, tenor saxophone; Rick Germanson, piano; Dezron Douglas, bass; Alvester Garnett, drums; Anthony Carrillo, percussion; Carlos Maldonado, percussion; and Invited Guest Sherman Irby, alto saxophone), which masterfully navigates Vazquez' journey through Latin dance grooves, extended jazz improvisations, and slow, lushly orchestrated passages. With a special emphasis on Latin jazz, this performance will demonstrate just how hard this award-winning band can groove. There is a $30 cover.
