NYC: THE BIRDLAND JAZZ PARTY FEATURING VOCALIST GABRIELLE STRAVELLI

The Birdland Jazz Party will feature award-winning vocalist Gabrielle Stravelli on Sunday, November 2nd at 6:00 pm at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080). Her special guest is the award winning singer/ songwriter/ pianist Billy Styritch. Gabrielle Stravelli has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal following through her unique take on material from the new American songbook, as well as classic standards by artists as varied as Pink Floyd and Duke Ellington, Dolly Parton and Johnny Mercer. A trained actor, Gabrielle has a soulful sensitivity for the story in the lyric. Gabrielle began singing as a soloist with orchestras at the age of 15 and has since performed on stages from Amsterdam to New York including Carnegie Hall, the Hammerstein Ballroom, the Iridium Jazz Club, BB King Blues Club, Birdland Jazz Club, The Garage, Comix, the Fulton Theatre, and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center where she opened for Esperanza Spalding and Cassandra Wilson. She has appeared as a soloist with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra and the Cincinnati Pops, sang the role of Anita in West Side Story with the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra and performed the role of Jeannie in the European tour of HAIR. There is a $25 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum. 

NYC: ARTURO O'FARRILL AFRO LATIN JAZZ ORCHESTRA SUNDAYS

Grammy Award winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill brings his Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra to BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Sundays at 9:00 & 11:00pm. Called the leader of the "first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz", O'Farrill was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte. The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra is the resident large format ensemble of the nonprofit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) founded by Arturo O'Farrill in 2007 and dedicated to preserving the music and heritage of big band Latin jazz, supporting its performance for new audiences, and educating young people in the understanding and performance of this important cultural treasure. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: KENNY G AT THE BLUE NOTE

Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Kenny G will perform at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Thursday through Sunday, October 30th through November 2nd with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. In a recording career that spans almost three decades and 24 albums, Kenny G has grafted elements of R&B, pop, and Latin music to a jazz foundation, solidifying his reputation as the premier artist in contemporary jazz. Since the early '80s, his combination of unparalleled instrumental chops and indelible melodies has resulted in sales of more than 75 million records worldwide (45 million in the U.S. alone) and more than a dozen climbs to the top of Billboard's Contemporary Jazz chart. There is a $45 cover.

NYC: 65TH ANNIVERSARY TRIBUTE TO PRESTIGE RECORDS AND RUDY VAN GELDER BIRTHDAY SALUTE

The Jamison Ross Trio (Jamison Ross, drums; Yasushi Nakamura, bass; Chris Pattishall, piano) and Special Guests Mike Rodriguez, trumpet and Melissa Aldana, tenor saxophone plus host Bob Porter present a 65th Anniversary Tribute to Prestige Records and Rudy Van Gelder Birthday Salute at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Thursday through Sunday, October 30th through November 2nd with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. It has been almost two years since the 26-year-old drummer Jamison Ross took first place in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, jazz's number one spotlight for rising talent. In addition to membership in the bands of veterans like Carmen Lundy and Wess Anderson, Ross can be seen throughout the world with some of the most recognizable young talent, like Jon Batiste and Cicile McLorin Salvant. Ross' roots in jazz and gospel give him unfailing feel, passion, and thrill-inducing chops. Catch his trio in the club while you can, during our celebration of Prestige Records' 65th anniversary, before his debut album is released in early 2015. There is a $35 cover.
