WASHINGTON, DC: THE FREDDY COLE QUARTET AT BLUES ALLEY

The Freddy Cole Quartet will perform at BLUES ALLEY(1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Thursday through Sunday, August 14th through 17th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Cole doesn't apologize for sounding like his brother, Nat "King" Cole. There are certain unmistakable similarities. He plays piano and sings and performs live with guitar and upright bass, just like Nat. Yet his voice is raspier, smokier, jazzier even. But he has emerged from the awesome shadow cast by his elder brother. In truth, his phrasing is far closer to that of Frank Sinatra or Billie Holiday than that of his brother and his timing swings a little more. Cole's career continues to ascend as he has moved into the front ranks of America's homegrown art form with a style and musical sophistication all his own. Call for cover/minimum information.

BETHESDA, MD: JON CARROLL AT BETHESDA BLUES

After a long and artistically rich career as a songwriter, sideman to-the-stars, composer, singer, multi-instrumentalist and performer, Jon brings his collection of songs ranging from the highly rollicking to the poignantly reckoning to BETHESDA BLUES & JAZZ SUPPER CLUB (7719 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD - 240-330-4500) on Thursday, August 14th for an intimate solo performance. Since his early days of national notoriety with the Grammy-Award winning Starland Vocal Band (Afternoon Delight) he has wowed audiences near and far with his exciting and energetic keyboard, guitar and vocal prowess behind a league of renowned artists that includes Mary Chapin Carpenter, Rodney Crowell, Dixie Chicks and many others. His songs have been recorded by Linda Ronstadt, Tom Jones and Kenny Rogers to name a few. He is a sought-after player/producer and this collection of tunes is a popping yet intimate offering of Jon's many sides that will have your hips shaking, your mind thinking, and, occasionally, your heart aching. There is a $15 cover.
