WASHINGTON, DC: JOE HERRERA - ARTIST IN RESIDENCY AT BOHEMIAN CAVERNS

Trumpeter Joe Herrera will serve at Artist in Residency atBOHEMIAN CAVERNS(2001 Eleventh Street N.W., Washington, DC - 202-299-0800) on Tuesdays in August with performances at 7:30 & 9:00 pm. Seeing a jazz gig in the District that doesn't feature Joe Herrera is almost a challenge. The ubiquitous trumpeter is at the center of the city's burgeoning jazz scene and plays an important role as both bandleader and sideman, co-directing the fine Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra with saxophonist Brad Linde on Mondays. A native of Yuma, Arizona, Herrera began his musical journey at age 10, when he wanted to play the saxophone, but instead started on the trumpet because his father already had one. He became serious about music as a freshman in high school and would often raid the record collection his band director kept. Classic players like Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard and John Coltrane caught the young musician's ear, and from there, his interest took off. After studies at Mesa Community College and Arizona State University, as well as stints as a musician on cruise ships, he began working regularly in and around Phoenix. An opportunity then arose for Herrera to move to DC, which he did in 2003. He formed his first group, Joe Herrera's Landscaping Crew, in 2005, which featured area regulars Matt Rippetoe, Bobby Muncy and Anthony Pirog. Things have only gone up from there. There is a $10 cover.

WASHINGTON, DC: SCOTT "BUGGS" ALLEN AT BLUES ALLEY

Scott "Buggs" Allen performs at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Tuesday, August 12th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. When you're the 3rd generation of a family musical legacy, certain expectations exist. Those expectations are seldom met, let alone exceeded. But the grandson of a Cuban born balladeer, and his 5 octave soprano wife would be come a multi-instrumentalist, band leader, and eventually an award-winning musical director. Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Allen trained in music and the theatre arts at Arena Players, Inc. under the advisement of his mother (also a classically trained soprano and pianist). It was this training that would prepare "Bugs" for his eventual association with television producer and award-winning playwright Michael Ajakwe with whom he would serve as musical director for two of Ajakwe's hit stage plays. for which Scott won 2005's N.A.A.C.P. Theatre Award for Best Musical Director. Call for cover/minimum information.
