TORONTO: THE MICAH BARNES TRIO AT THE JAZZ BISTRO

Micah Barnes and his trio are celebrating the release of the title track from his upcoming collection "New York Stories" with two very special performances at THE JAZZ BISTRO(251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Sunday, April 13th: for Sunday Brunch at 12:30 pm and the evening show at 7:00 pm. In both shows Micah will be debuting the material from the upcoming recording. Micah's upcoming collection "New York Stories" (due fall 2014), pays homage to the rich musical history of the Big Apple with songs that describe a long distance romance using the rhythms of the Cotton Club, the Brill Building, The Apollo Theatre and classic Broadway and features duet vocals with Molly Johnson and Jackie Richardson. The results are an assured collection of deeply personal and sophisticated songs that remind us, like Micah's musical heroes Tony Bennett, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and Ray Charles, that the deepest musical traditions are always contemporary. The evening performance will feature the musicians who join Micah on his romantic first single "New York Story" including brother Daniel Barnes on drums, Russ Boswell on bass and special guest pianist Michael Shand. There is a $15 for each show.

TORONTO: DON FRANCKS: SUNDAY NIGHT AT THE JAZZ CELLAR

THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) is excited to present legendary vocalist Don Francks as part of a new series taking place Sunday evenings at 8:00 pm in the Jazz Cellar, their beautiful 3rd floor lounge. He is joined by Steve Hunter on keys. When Don Francks opens his mouth to sing, he takes his audience on a journey. This celebrated singer and actor is widely regarded as one of the finest and most authentic jazz voices in Canada, having released several recordings including "Jackie Gleason Says: No One in This World is Like Don Francks" (with guitar legend Lenny Breau) , "Lost and Alone" (featuring orchestra arrangements by conductor Patrick Williams) and the original motion-picture soundtrack to Finian's Rainbow; among others. Francks has starred in many CBC television specials with jazz compatriots Jimmy Dale, Guido Basso, pianist Maury Kaye and the late, great Ron Collier. Then, in the sixties he moved to New York City where he performed on The Jackie Gleason Show, sang at The Blue Angel, and recorded a live album at the Village Vanguard. He also made several appearances on the Johnny Carson, Mike Douglas, Dick Cavett and Merv Griffin shows. Next stop: Hollywood, where he guest-starred in shows like The Wild Wild West, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Mannix, and Mission: Impossible. "La Femme Nikita", "The Listener", "My Bloody Valentine" and "I'm Not There". His list of work as a voice-over artist for ads and cartoons is simply too vast to even begin mentioning! At 82 years young, Francks has just released "21st Century Francks," a live recording captured in 2002 at The Top O' the Senator. He will be performing songs from the CD, with many surprises in store along the way. There is a $5 cover.

WASHINGTON, DC: CYRUS CHESTNUT TRIO AT BLUES ALLEY

Chestnut appeals to both aficionados and fans alike. Adept enough to perform with Wynton Marsalis, yet hip enough to make the "Peanuts" album swing. Chestnut worked with a number of top-notch musicians including Jon Hendricks, Betty Carter, Terence Blanchard, and Donald Harrison, before recording his first solo CD at the age of 30. Chestnut enjoys mixing styles and resists being typecast in any one niche, though his gospel sound is apparent on a number of his recordings. Call for cover/minimum information.
