BOSTON: FREDDIE BRYANT AND KALEIDOSCOPE AT SCULLERS

Freddie Bryant's new edition of his Kaleidoscope Quintet will perform at SCULLERS JAZZ CLUB (400 Soldiers Field Road, Allston, MA - 617-562-4111 - ) on Tuesday, November 5th at 8:00 pm. Bryant continues his habit of finding inspiration in rhythms from around the world. His past CDs have often featured Brazilian, Latin and African rhythms. Dinner/Show: $60 Show only: $20.

TORONTO: DAVID RUBEL QUARTET CD RELEASE: "INTO THE DARK"

Toronto-born Jazz saxophonist David Rubel will perform atTHE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299 - ) on Tuesday, November 5th at 9:00 pm. He is joined by Winston Matsushita - piano, Malcolm Conner - bass and Robin Claxton - drums. Rubel is an alumnus of both the Humber College Contemporary Music Program and the University of Toronto Jazz Studies Program. His rich sound and versatile brand of Jazz has been featured in literally all of Toronto's major jazz venues from "The Rex Jazz & Blues Bar" and the legendary "Montreal Bistro", to "The Old Mill" and the new "Jazz Bistro". Rubel considers himself fortunate to have studied with jazz legends Pat LaBarbera ("The Buddy Rich Band") and jazz educator/composer/saxophonist (and multi-Juno winner) Mike Murley. David has toured throughout Europe, the United States and Canada, and has performed with Grammy and Juno winners such as Maria Schneider, Kurt Elling, Donny McCaslin, Don Thompson, Kirk MacDonald, Tim Ries, Mark Eisenman, Archie Alleyne and many others. David can be heard as a soloist and sideman on numerous Canadian recordings, and has also appeared in various short films and web series. David Rubel is thrilled to be releasing his debut CD as a leader, for which he has been awarded Grants from The Ontario Arts Council and The Canadian Music Fund (FACTOR) in relation to the production and release of Into the Dark. There is a $15 cover.

Nilson Matta's "Black Orpheus" will be presented at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141 - http://www.bluesalley.com/ ) on Tuesday, November 5th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Five decades later, Nilson Matta's long-time love affair with the music of two seminal pillars of Brazilian musical culture finds consummation in the 2013 release of Nilson Matta's Black Orpheus, a jazz-flavored reimagining of the music from both Orfeu da Conceicao and Black Orpheus. DC: THE BOHEMIAN CAVERNS JAZZ ORCHESTRA MONDAYS

The Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra performs every Monday night at BOHEMIAN CAVERNS (2001 Eleventh Street N.W., Washington, DC - 202-299-0800) with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Still the Hottest Big Band in the City, The Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra is a 17 piece powerhouse force cofounded by baritone saxophonist Brad Linde, trumpeter Joe Herrera and club owner Omrao Brown. The BCJO presents a variety of music from big band literature and features some of the District's best musicians. Music from Ellington, Basie, Strayhorn, Thad Jones, Oliver Nelson, Maria Schneider and originals by band members will embrace and challenge the tradition of big band repertoire. MARYLAND: TERRY TEACHOUT CELEBRATES THE LIFE OF DUKE ELLINGTON

Celebrate the life of Duke Ellington with an evening of music history and live jazz at the recently renovated BETHESDA BLUES & JAZZ SUPPER CLUB (7719 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD - 240-330-4500 - ) on Tuesday, November 5th at 7:00 pm. Terry Teachout, the drama critic at the Wall Street Journal and author of Pops: A Life of Louis Armstrong will discuss his latest book Duke: A Life of Duke Ellington (Gotham, $30). Teachout's writing has spanned many types of art, including an original play, and liner notes for Diana Krall. The Duke's classics will be performed by a live jazz quartet. Food, drink, and copies of the book will be available for purchase at the club. There is a $25 cover.
