SAN FRANCISCO: CABARET COMICO AT SOCIETY CABARET

Cabaret Comico, a salute to comic singers and songwriters, will be presented at SOCIETY CABARET AT THE HOTEL REX (562 Sutter Street, San Francisco, CA 94102 - 800-982-2787) on Friday & Saturday, October 17th & 18th at 8:00 pm. The shows are hosted by G. Scott Lacy and Lua Hadar. Cabaret Comico 2014 is presented in partnership with Italian Cabaret Festival Dallo Sciamano allo Showman and the Centro Culturale Teatro Camuno in the Vallecamonica, Italy. Performers on Friday the 17th include Candace Forest, Paul Frantz, Diane Merlino, Nancy Schimmel, and Bobby Weinapple, Beth Wilmurt. Scheduled to appear on the 18th are Marilyn Cooney, Bill Cooper, Barry Lloyd, Lauren Mayer, Darlene Popovic, and Ray Renati. Singer, pianist and songwriter Tony DeSare returns to FEINSTEIN'S AT THE NIKKO (222 Mason Street, San Francisco, CA - 866-663-1063) with his brand new show, Night Life, for two performances only: Thursday, October 16th at 8:00 pm and Friday, October 17th at 8:00 pm. Tony DeSare's new show will explore some of the most hauntingly beautiful and memorable melodies ever written, both old and new, plus a few new DeSare originals. From Cole Porter and Duke Ellington to Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and Willie Nelson, the only requirement is a sophisticated, romantic and swinging melody. GRAMMY nominated singer/ songwriter & R&B icon Dwele will perform at YOSHI'S (1330 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-655-5600) on Friday & Saturday, October 17th & 18th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. As one of R&B's smoothest singer/ songwriter/ producers, Dwele has crafted so many romantic ballads, from "Find A Way" to "I'm Cheatin'," that it might be difficult to see the soulful tenor as anything other than a modest poet. But that's the great thing about Andwele Gardner, his creativity opens a new world for himself and his listeners. Drawing on the creative strides he made on W.ants. W.orld. The most provocative risk taker of today's jazz divas, Rene heats things up in her tribute to the divine Eartha Kitt. The show features both well-known and obscure gems from the saucy Kitt repertoire including "C'est Si Bon," "Come On To My House," "Peel Me A Grape," and more. Rene Marie is a songwriter and jazz vocalist who began her professional music career at age 42. In 1998, she self-released her debut album Renaissance and toured as Ella Fitzgerald in a regional play. Marie signed a contract with Maxjazz label and released four albums with them. Joshua Redman is one of the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artists to have emerged in the decade of the 1990s. He was exposed at an early age to a variety of musics (jazz, classical, rock, soul, Indian, Indonesian, Middle-Eastern, African) and instruments (recorder, piano, guitar, gatham, gamelan), and began playing clarinet at age nine before switching to what became his primary instrument, the tenor saxophone, one year later. Joshua Redman has been nominated for 2 Grammys and has garnered top honors in critics and readers polls of DownBeat, Jazz Times, The Village Voice and Rolling Stone. He wrote and performed the music for Louis Malle's final film Vanya on 42nd Street, and is both seen and heard in the Robert Altman film Kansas City. There is a $43 cover.

Emily Bear will appear at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Friday, October 17th at 7:30 pm. Bear is 12 years old and began piano studies with Emilio del Rosario at The Music Institute of Chicago. She currently studies classical piano at New Music School with Mary Sauer, Principal Keyboardist for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and jazz improvisation with Alan Swain. Additional mentors include Yoheved Kaplinsky, head of the Juilliard Piano Department and Frank Kimbrough for Jazz, also at Juilliard. She studies film scoring at New York University, (NYU), with Ron Sadoff and Ira Newborn.Emily is equally comfortable playing jazz, classical, or her own compositions.When she was five years old, Emily made her professional debut performing a solo concert at the Ravinia Music Festival. >THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) will celebrate the latest release by Tara Davidson, "Duets," on Addo Records on Thursday through Saturday, October 16th through 18th at 9:00 pm. Tara Davidson is a JUNO Award nominated alto and soprano saxophonist who has performed around the world at such prestigious venues as New York City's Carnegie Hall, the acclaimed North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands, the International Jazz Festival in Lima, Peru, and The Kennedy Center, in Washington, DC. Davidson has produced three recordings as a leader since 2003 and performed on over twenty recordings as a side person. Davidson's sophomore CD, "Code Breaking", was nominated for a JUNO Award in 2007 for "Traditional Jazz Album of the Year". In early 2011 Davidson released her third solo disc, "View", which showcased her evolution as a composer and improviser. Davidson's most significant musical influence has been saxophonist Mike Murley with whom she studied for many years. She is a graduate of the prestigious University of Toronto Jazz Performance Program where she studied with other prominent Canadian musicians such as Phil Nimmons, Paul Read, Alex Dean, and Kirk MacDonald. Davidson is an active educator. She is on faculty at York University, the Humber College Community Music School and the National Music Camp of Canada (Jazz Faculty). There is a $15 cover.

Benny Green is a hard bop jazz pianist who was a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. He has been compared to Bud Powell in style and counts him as an influence. The trio is made up of Benny Green (Piano), David Wong (Bass, except 10/17), Dezron Douglas (Bass, 10/17), and Rodney Green (Drums). Born in New York in 1963, Benny Green grew up in Berkeley, California, and began classical piano studies at the age of seven. Influenced by his father, a tenor saxophonist, his attention soon turned to Jazz. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: CASSANDRA WILSON AT THE BLUE NOTE

Cassandra Wilson, a jazz musician, vocalist, songwriter, and producer from Jackson, Mississippi, will perform at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592 - http://www.bluenote.net/ ) on Thursday through Sunday, October 16th through 19th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. She began playing piano at six, guitar by the age of twelve and was working as a vocalist by the mid-'70s, singing a wide variety of material. After moving to New York City in the early 80's, Cassandra met saxophonist Steve Coleman and became one of the founding members of the M-Base Collective. She signed with Blue Note Records in 1992 and released a landmark album titled "Blue Light 'Til Dawn" which would pave the way for a new generation of jazz singers seeking an approach and repertoire that challenges the supremacy of the American Standard songbook. Wilson has continued interpreting in fresh and creative ways vintage blues, country and folk music up until the present day. Her awards include: two Grammys, the Django D'Or, The Edison Music Award, a marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail, and the 2012 Echo Award for Jazz. There is a $35-$55 cover.

MAC, Back Stage Bistro and Nightlife Award winning singer, songwriter and recording artist Carolyn Montgomery-Forant, returns to the New York City stage in her first solo show in eight years! PlaidBird Productions will present Jaye Maynard in "Bird Amongst the Blossom - A Tribute to the First Blossom Dearie Songbook" at DON'T TELL MAMA(343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788) on Friday, October 17th at 9:30 pm. She is joined by Jon Delfin (musical direction/piano), Leon Lee Dorsey (upright bass) and Vin Scialla (drums). Maynard interprets "The First Blossom Dearie Songbook", containing songs written for and by Dearie in collaboration with Johnny Mercer, Bob Dorough, Dave Frishberg and Mahriah Blackwolf, arrangements by Mike Renzi. Maynard is now representing the posthumously published "Blossom Dearie Songbook" for Hal Leonard Music. Singer/actress Molly Ringwald will make her Cafe Carlyle debut in 'An Evening with Molly Ringwald' at THE CAFE CARLYLE (35 East 76th Street, NYC - 212-744-1600) on Tuesday through Saturday, October 7th through 18th at 8:45 pm with an additional show on Saturdays at 10:45 pm. Ringwald, who got her start in the iconic John Hughes films The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles and Pretty In Pink, has since become an accomplished stage actress, writer and jazz singer. She has starred in Broadway productions of the Pulitzer Prize-winning How I Learned to Drive; the revival of Cabaret; Tony-nominated Enchanted April and the West End production of When Harry Met Sally. She will perform songs from the Great American Songbook and Ringwald's acclaimed album, Except Sometimes and will be joined by her musical director and pianist Peter Smith (all dates except October 9 where he will be substituted by Laurence Hobgood) and Trevor Ware on bass. He has earned numerous awards and critical acclaim for his recorded works and passionate live performances. Upon relocating to New York in early 1983, Osby quickly established himself as a notable and in demand sideman for artists as varied as Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie, Jack DeJohnette, Andrew Hill, Muhal Richard Abrams, Jim Hall and Jaki Byard as well as with many ethnic and new music ensembles in the New York area. Joshua Redman has been nominated for 2 Grammys and has garnered top honors in critics and readers polls of DownBeat, Jazz Times, The Village Voice and Rolling Stone. Tara Davidson is a JUNO Award nominated alto and soprano saxophonist who has performed around the world at such prestigious venues as New York City's Carnegie Hall, the acclaimed North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands, the International Jazz Festival in Lima, Peru, and The Kennedy Center, in Washington, DC. Davidson has produced three recordings as a leader since 2003 and performed on over twenty recordings as a side person. Davidson's sophomore CD, "Code Breaking", was nominated for a JUNO Award in 2007 for "Traditional Jazz Album of the Year". In early 2011 Davidson released her third solo disc, "View", which showcased her evolution as a composer and improviser. Davidson's most significant musical influence has been saxophonist Mike Murley with whom she studied for many years. She is a graduate of the prestigious University of Toronto Jazz Performance Program where she studied with other prominent Canadian musicians such as Phil Nimmons, Paul Read, Alex Dean, and Kirk MacDonald. Davidson is an active educator. She is on faculty at York University, the Humber College Community Music School and the National Music Camp of Canada (Jazz Faculty). There is a $15 cover.

Born in New York in 1963, Benny Green grew up in Berkeley, California, and began classical piano studies at the age of seven. Influenced by his father, a tenor saxophonist, his attention soon turned to Jazz. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: CASSANDRA WILSON AT THE BLUE NOTE

Cassandra Wilson, a jazz musician, vocalist, songwriter, and producer from Jackson, Mississippi, will perform at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592 - http://www.bluenote.net/ ) on Thursday through Sunday, October 16th through 19th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. She began playing piano at six, guitar by the age of twelve and was working as a vocalist by the mid-'70s, singing a wide variety of material. After moving to New York City in the early 80's, Cassandra met saxophonist Steve Coleman and became one of the founding members of the M-Base Collective. She signed with Blue Note Records in 1992 and released a landmark album titled "Blue Light 'Til Dawn" which would pave the way for a new generation of jazz singers seeking an approach and repertoire that challenges the supremacy of the American Standard songbook. Wilson has continued interpreting in fresh and creative ways vintage blues, country and folk music up until the present day. Her awards include: two Grammys, the Django D'Or, The Edison Music Award, a marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail, and the 2012 Echo Award for Jazz. There is a $35-$55 cover.

NYC: THE KUUMBA COLLECTIVE: THE SOUTH AFRICAN SONGBOOK: SA TO USA

South African vocalist Nicky Schrire and American saxophonist TK Blue (a longtime friend and scholar of South African Jazz) will perform a series of classic pieces from South Africa's Jazz Songbook at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Wednesday & Thursday, October 15th & 16th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. In collaboration with Carnegie Hall and part of the Ubuntu Festival, this will be a special performance showcasing the multi-directional global influence of American jazz music. London-born, South-African raised Nicky Schrire is consistently hard to classify, often drawing comparison to jazz influenced folk artists, and TK Blue has spent a career performing classic jazz, Afro-Caribbean music, South African music, and more around the world. There is a $35 cover.
