NYC: MAD JENNY CRAZY ABOUT PANGEA

Mad Jenny, the brainy provocateur of downtown cabaret, begins a four-month residency at the CAFE NOCTAMBULO AT PANGEA(178 Second Avenue, NYC - 212-995-0900) on Monday, March 7th, at 7:00 pm. "Love und Greed," her sumptuous theatrical revue blending songs from the Weimar underground with covertly inserted contemporary repertoire, performs the first Monday of the month from March through June. The dates are Mondays, March 7th (the opening), April 4th, May 2nd, and June 6th, all at 7:00 pm. Created and written by and starring Jenny Lee Mitchell and directed by Patrice Miller, "Love und Greed" features Maria Dessena on accordion and piano, Ric Becker on trombone, and Marty Isenberg on bass. The arrangements are by Dessena. Performing songs of longing and protest about money, misogyny, homosexuality, and abortion, not to mention racial hatred and the inexorable march of the war machine, Mad Jenny and The Society Band whip up a post-modern Weimar cabaret that is a chilling reminder that history can and does repeat itself. The evening's songwriters include such standouts of the Berlin underground cabaret movement of the '20s and '30s, including Mischa Spoliansky, Friedrich Hollaender, Brecht/Weill, Brecht/Eissler, and Claire Waldoff. Among the modern stowaways are Debbie Harry, Annie Lennox, and David Bowie. Each night features a number of hand-picked special guests from the demi-mondes of burlesque and cabaret - to be announced. A native New Yorker, Jenny Lee Mitchell has lived and performed in Vienna, Munich, Hamburg and Berlin. Versed in clowning, operetta, musical theatre, and cabaret from abroad, she is also a director of theatre. She has acted in and/ or directed productions at 59E59 Theaters, 3LD, LaMama ETC, and with Untitled Theater Company #61. She also translates many of the songs in the Mad Jenny repertoire (from German to English), including rarities she's uncovered that were created in the Theresienstadt concentration camp. There is a $20 cover plus a $20 food/drink minimum.

Fyvush Finkel began his career over 80 years ago playing the numerous Jewish theatres along Second Avenue in NYC. When he was 43 he began touring in Fiddler on the Roof, first playing the Innkeeper, then the Butcher, and eventually Tevye. Her vivacious and wholly original take on Edith Piaf presents the French icon as a versatile powerhouse of heartwarming and heartbreaking emotion. Full of personality and humor, Marshall delivers the dramatic repertoire - including her own English adaptations - with stirring authenticity, and not a hint of imitation. Her song selection is an unusual mix of the well known (La Vie en Rose and L'Accordeoniste) and the rare (Avec Ce Soleil and The Lady From Pigalle) with superb accompaniment by Ross Patterson. This past December, Gay was critically lauded in the press for her star turn in Piaf: A Centennial Celebration at Town Hall, produced by Daniel Nardicio. Gay Marshall played Diana Morales in A Chorus Line on Broadway (a role she left to move to Paris, where she married photographer and Man on Wire accomplice, Jean Louis Blondeau), and originated the role of Grizabella in the French production of Cats. Her first show about Piaf, called La Vie l'Amour, played successful engagements at The Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival, Dayton's Victory Theater and The Missouri Rep. Marshall's Fringe show, and runs in The Baker's Wife at Goodspeed, The Papermill Playhouse and The York Theatre led her back to New York, where she re-captured the attention of New York audiences with her performance in the Zipper Theater's revival of Jacques Brel Is Alive And Well And Living In Paris.
