NYC: JASON GRAAE, SUSAN GRAHAM, BABY JANE DEXTER, ERIC COMSTOCK & BARBARA FASANO AT THE MET - AN INTERNATIONAL CABARET FESTIVAL EVENT

THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) presents Jason Graae, Susan Graham, Baby Jane Dexter and Eric Comstock & Barbara Fasano on Saturday, February 20th at 9:30 pm as part of the first International Cabaret Festival, Sponsored by Cabaret Scenes Magazine, which closes Sunday. Musical Director is Ian Herman. Jason Graae recently hosted Opera New York recent return to the Metropolitan Room, along with a sextet of classical singers as Cabaret and Opera Collide! Special Guest is Metropolitan Opera Star, Susan Graham. Baby Jane Dexter adopted her stage name because her mother, an actress, was also named Jane Dexter. While still at school Baby Jane was working professionally with a local theatre group and was briefly in the Broadway cast of Hair. After school, she supported herself driving a taxi while seeking stage work. She appeared at New York clubs and also on television, in No Holds Barred, and the theatre, Anything Goes and The Music Man. Like many other artists, Dexter's career stalled in the late 70s when musical tastes changed. From 1981 she was active as a counsellor in programs designed to offer an alternative to prison for young offenders. When a close friend, AIDS activist, Vito Russo, persuaded her to start singing again, she performed at AIDS benefit concerts at the Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center. Late in 1990, Dexter decided to perform a show at Eighty-Eights in Greenwich Village for Russo but he died just before is was scheduled to open. She continued with the show and early the following year was at the club performing a show I Got Thunder, which she also recorded. This and subsequent shows at Eighty-Eights, such as Big, Bad, & Blue and The Real Thing - An Intimate Opera, attracted considerable and highly favourable attention. Dexter possesses a powerful singing voice and a strong and engaging stage presence. Among awards she has won are the Backstage Magazine Bistro Award, MAC Female Vocalist Of The Year award, 1994 and 1996, and the MAC Award for Best Major Pop/Rhythm & Blues Performer, winning the latter in 1998, 1999 and again in 2002. Singer/ Pianist Eric Comstock, and his singing partner and wife Barbara Fasano are regular performers at New York's most prestigious clubs. Together they were among the last singers to headline at the Algonquin's legendary Oak Room supper club, with their show "HELLUVA TOWN: A New York Soundtrack", which enjoyed an acclaimed and sold-out run and has toured the country. There is a $24 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

SYRACUSE, NYC: KAREN OBERLIN - THE SINGULAR SONGS OF ELVIS COSTELLO

Karen Oberlin comes to her home town this weekend, Friday & Saturday, February 19th & 20th, to perform at THE RED HOUSE (201 S West St, Syracuse, NY - 315-425-0405) with her acclaimed tribute to the varied music of Elvis Costello. Showtime both evenings is 8:00 pm. She is joined by her musical director Tedd Firth on piano, Sean Harkness on guitar and Tom Hubbard on bass. Karen has been a fan of Elvis Costello since her early teens, when his young angst, disillusionment and vulnerable heart seemed perfectly in synch with her own. One of the most versatile and prolific contemporary artists, over the years Elvis has delved into innumerable genres and styles with passion and intelligence, including classical, jazz and pop. His many collaborative partners have included Burt Bacharach, the Brodsky String Quartet, Paul McCartney, Bill Frisell and the Jazz Passengers. For her new show, Karen brings forth a collection of material from her more than 30 years of following his eclectic, fascinating career to express some of the most intriguing elements of this unique singer/songwriter's work and life. Hailed as one of the "saviors of the American Songbook", Karen Oberlin believes that if one takes a close and discerning look, that songbook is still being written. She is a recipient of the Mabel Mercer Foundation's Donald F. Smith Award, along with Bistro, multiple MAC awards, and an honorary doctorate in music. Her recordings are often featured on Jonathan Schwartz's radio show and she has headlined at all the major New York nightclub venues, including the Algonquin's Oak Room, Feinstein's at the Regency, the Cafe Carlyle, Birdland, Metropolitan Room, Kitano and 54 Below. She has performed at concert halls such as Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Town Hall and Caramoor, and her performances take her all over the world, including her annual engagements in London.
