NYC: DINA MARTINA: FLAT & LACKING AT THE BEACHMAN
Cult sensation Dina Martina returns to New York and THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATRE (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909) on Saturday, September 19th at 7:00 pm with her show DINA MARTINA: FLAT & LACKING. Additional dates are Sunday, September 20th, and Thursday through Sunday, September 24th through 27th - all shows at 7:00 pm. After attaining cult status in her native town of Seattle and touring nationally, Martina's official New York debut in 2005 sold out in minutes. Her follow-up shows have left jaded audiences (including Michael Stipe, Whoopi Goldberg, John Waters, Matt Stone, John Cameron Mitchell, Margaret Cho, Bruce Vilanch, Joyce Dewitt, and Jeff Stryker - a list as strange has her shows) stunned and clamoring for more. DINA MARTINA: FLAT & LACKING, like all of Martina's surreal shows, is a nearly indescribable night of unique entertainment that assaults the senses like no other show. Once again, Dina offers a delightful blend of unequalled song, unnecessary dance, unattractive costumes, and unbelievable video. Dina has packed venues throughout Seattle as well as in Provincetown, Philadelphia, Vancouver, Portland, San Francisco and London. Martina has shared the bill with acts such as Modest Mouse, Built To Spill, Justin Bond, Nina Hagen and The Village People. She's the recipient of two GLAAD Media Award nominations for Best Off-Off-Broadway Show, two Footlight Awards from The Seattle Times (1999 & 2004), a 1997 nominee for a Seattle Stranger Fringe Theater Award for Best Solo Show, and a finalist for the 2007 Alpert Award. NYC: NANCY HARMS: "ELLINGTON AT NIGHT"
Jazz vocalist Nancy Harms returns with her show "Ellington At Night" to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Saturday, September 19th at 11:30 pm. In this acclaimed show, Nancy lends her luxuriant touch to the interpretation of a number of Ellington anthems and rarities, specially selected by Nancy and arranged for this concert by brilliant pianist-composer (and frequent Harms collaborator) Jeremy Siskind, who accompanies Nancy with his trio. "I Got It Bad And That Ain't Good", "Prelude To A Kiss", "Rocks In My Bed", and "Strange Feeling" are just a few of the songs to be presented by Nancy and company on this very special night. In a relatively short time, Nancy Harms has distinguished herself as one of the most uniquely gifted young jazz vocalists on the East Coast. Born and raised in the tiny Midwestern town of Clara City, Minnesota, Nancy had no exposure to jazz as a child, no connections to the music via family or education. Though she was singing for small public gatherings by the age of four, it wasn't until attending Concordia College in Moorhead, MN that Harms discovered jazz. Nancy immersed herself in Minneapolis-St. Paul's local jazz scene, and by early 2007, people in the community were taking notice. In the most positive sense, no one had ever seen or heard anyone quite like Nancy before: She possessed a stateliness that was unmistakable, yet she was totally unpretentious in manner. She sang ballads with a folk-like, delicate, ethereal quality and a marvelous way of digging deep into the layers of lyrical meaning. Initially, her most noteworthy attribute from a jazz perspective was her sense of time: She clearly possessed a natural gift for phrasing and an innate sense of swing. Of no small importance to her growing popularity as well was the fact that she was uniquely beautiful, in both sound and appearance. Nancy's dedication to jazz is complete. She is abundantly gifted, and her interpretations reveal her to be a fine actor as well, as she possesses a natural ability to movingly express the meaning of any song. A gifted jazz specialist and an intuitively brilliant interpretive artist. There is a $22.50 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
