NYC: MICHAEL CERVERIS & LOOSE CATTLE / LYNN DRURY

The band LOOSE CATTLE was named after a country road sign ... and sound that way. They will perform at JOE'S PUB at THE PUBLIC THEATRE (425 Lafayette Street, NYC - 212-967-7555) as part of a double show with Lynn Drury on Monday, July 20th at 9:30 pm. Like a night in a neglected pasture corralling Ferdinand the Bull, Babe the Blue Ox and mad cow disease, evenings with the Cattle are an unruly ramble through classic Carter Family and Louvin Brothers songs, contemporary tunes about guns and gasoline, and mashups that mark Dolly Parton and Cee-Lo Green with the same glowing branding iron. Michael Cerveris (actor and former Bob Mould sideman hailing from West Virginia) and Kimberly Kaye (Garden State native and ex New Direxion trumpetress) are duo vocalists in the Buddy and Julie Miller / Civil Wars vein, riding both Cerveris' original songs and crowd-pleasing covers with able-bodied ranch hands Gabriel Caplan (Naomi Shelton & Gospel Queens), Lorenzo Wolf (The Lisps) and Eddie Zweiback (Losers' Lounge). Lynn Drury has been performing, in one arena or another, her entire life. At the ripe old age of five she won a 4-H state competition in Mississippi in pole bending. If you don't know what pole bending is, it•s a little like barrel racing, Lynn says. That's horse talk. In a word, rodeos. Once you know that much about Lynn, you understand her approach. She picked up the guitar at 26, went at it like a pro, and she•s never stopped working. Her inspiration is her environment and since the mid-nineties, that environment has been New Orleans. The transition for the Yazoo City - born Drury was smooth. She says jasmine smells like honeysuckle, and you believe her. Sultry, sweet songs turn funky, and it's all in the same neighborhood. These days, Lynn herself is part of the scenery. She's been a regular at French Quarter Fest and New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival for years, and has played just about everywhere in town. There is a $20 cover.
