NYC: TOM CULVER: COLE PORTER UNCORKED

Los Angeles based Tom Culver brings his show 'Cole Porter Uncorked' to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Wednesday, July 10th at 7:00 pm.As a boy, Tom Culver was mesmerized by the flicking images on the silver screen as he sat transfixed in the darkness of the small-town South Dakota movie palaces. Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Donald O'Connor and Dan Daily glided across lacquered dance floors with their glamorous partners and the die was cast. The Navy offered a ticket from the snow swept plains. After service, Tom located in Oakland, California and discovered the Bay Area's theater and music scenes. A succession of record deals with small labels led to a signing with Dot Records where he cut his first singles. But as the company was absorbed by international giant, Gulf & Western, it was a tumultuous era of rock & roll and many traditional pop artists, Tom included, found themselves out of the mix. So he reinvented himself in Hollywood as a wardrobe man for film and television productions. As a set costumer, he dressed a cast of stars, and was honored to work on Murder She Wrote starring Angela Lansbury. Tom also penned The Murder She Wrote Cookbook, adding the title of "author" to his multi-disciplinary resume. But the music still echoed. He found a community of like-minded vocalists at piano bars and clubs in Los Angeles, and thanks to the success of artists like Harry Connick Jr. and Diana Krall, traditional pop music was once again being heard. Tom's audiences understood the nuances of this music as he performed at intimate venues including Hollywood's Gardenia. And songwriting offered still another avenue for expressive creativity. Today, in addition to his singing career, Tom takes jazz and tap dance classes, and pursues his hobby of photography. Blessed with a vital physicality, he notes his only vice is a penchant for strong coffee. There is a $22.50 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

NYC: MARY BOGUE: CONFESSIONS FROM THE HEARTBREAK HOTEL

Mary Bogue will perform her show "Confessions From The Heartbreak Hotel" at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM(34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Wednesday, June 10th at 9:30 pm. Mary Bogue's first memory of music traces back to her family's upstate New York home, sitting on the floor over the record player with her favorite 78 LP, "The Naughty Lady Of Shady Lane." Later, while her new California neighbor kids listened to surf music, Bogue's next milestone was courtesy of Dave Brubeck's "Take Five." Then Cozy Cole on "Topsy Part Two" which took her on a journey of no return. As a pre-teen, for Mary it was all about this stuff called jazz, R&B and Motown. And while Paul McCartney was okay in her books, he didn't compare to Smokey Robinson. Mary began singing around the L.A. scene near 2006 or 2007. There were Bogue's saucy shows, "Mary Bogue & Her King-Sized Papas" at Nola's and the Hollywood Studio Bar & Grill, another called "Boudoirs, Bordellos & The Blues", and even a holiday show at Vitello's in Study City. She's no stranger to film, TV work or art exhibits either. But all of this was way after she married a way cool guy who came and went – making 20 years look like a shooting star. When the dust settled on their once-shared dreams, she clawed her way back from grief and found joy again, this time with her voice telling the story. "Hell, I didn't just sing 'Heartbreak Hotel,' I was a resident," says Bogue. Fast forward to 2012 and her debut CD, "Don't Go To Strangers," which delivers her unrequited passion, with killer arrangements played by L.A. pianists Karen Hernandez and Steve Rawlins. There is a $22.50 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
