NYC: CARY NOKEY AT THE METROPOLITAN ROOM

Cary Nokey is the space where high intensity electronic dance music intersects with emotionally-charged rock, a hybrid of grit and glam. The show takes place at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ) on Wednesday, April 22nd at 9:30 pm. The idea to restructure the musical experience came to it's founder, 8bit (named for a type of distortion, a production effect that warms a sound by lowering its fidelity), a short time into Cary Nokey's musical life. Making music shouldn't have a format. Instead, why not reimagine Cary Nokey as a platform, featuring carefully curated acts rotating for however long, governed only by what makes sense for the music; think of it as karoake of Cary Nokey music. Above all, 8bit feels the current musical landscape is suffering from a condition, and Cary Nokey can treat it. It's not so much that Cary Nokey is anti-radio, but pro-experience, and what's on offer for audiences today pales in comparison to the exploration and creativity present in the '70s and '80s. To truly move someone, be it bodily or emotionally, is Cary Nokey's only goal. There is a $15 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

NYC: MARCUS GOLDHABER AT CAFE NOCTAMBULO

The powerful, 12-track collection reintroduces some of Goldhaber's favorite standards alongside five originals. There is a $15 cover plus a $15 food/drink minimum.

NYC: BEN RIMALOWER DEBUTS NEW PLAY "BAD WITH MONEY"

Ben Rimalower returns with his new play "Bad With Money" to THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 212-255-5438) running on Wednesdays at 9:30 pm. Ben Rimalower's addiction to spending beyond his means has driven him to extreme lengths all his life. In BAD WITH MONEY he charts his sometimes hilarious, sometimes harrowing struggle to overcome his problem - or get rich trying. "Bad With Money" is written and performed by Ben Rimalower and directed by Aaron Mark. Rimalower's first solo show, the long-running hit Patti Issues, explored his obsession with Broadway diva Patti LuPone and his relationship with his troubled gay father. Bad with Money delves into even deeper personal territory with the story of his struggle with debt - a journey that takes him through drug addiction, prostitution, fraud and multiple betrayals. There is a $25-$50 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

NYC: WILLY PORTER AT SUBCULTURE

Guitarist and singer/songwriter Willy Porter, who has been turning first time listeners into die-hard fans for more than two decades, performs at SUBCULTURE NYC (45 Bleaker Street, NYC) on Wednesday, April 22nd at 8:00 pm. NYC: JOE'S PUB PRESENTS ANN LIV YOUNG: ELEKTRA CABARET

Ann Liv Young: Elektra Cabaret will be presented at JOE'S PUB at THE PUBLIC THEATRE (425 Lafayette Street, NYC - 212-967-7555) on Wednesday, April 22nd; Monday, April 27th; and Wednesdays, May 6th, 13th & 27th - all shows at 9:30 pm. Ann Liv Young's creations are essentially a reflection of her life, inspired by her experiences with her dancers, family, collaborators and passerby. The ultra-personal becomes the material she molds for performance. Young's mission is to create work that is honest in its inception, creation and execution. Her work combines text, music and choreography to build scenes that set up ideas, images and relationships and then destroy them. Young's text is explicitly sexual, emotional and blunt, but it is always delivered in a manner that is not. The overt drama of her work is subdued by the realness of this text. Her work exemplifies constant contrast in all its layers. Audiences are provoked and forced to examine their role in the presentation of dance and performance. They must determine their place as supporters, mockers, posers or subjects. Young creates fantastical sets for the comfort of her dancers and in an effort to take the audience to a unique space that is not necessarily the stage. She often works with live animals on stage, forcing natural and odd relationships between these animals and the performers. A key component of Young's process maintains that all rehearsals must take place in her apartment. The stage is then set in the manner of her apartment with its atypical decor. In this way, the work is created with life surrounding it; her dog is walking around, roommates are doing laundry and the phone rings. The sense of focus for the performers and the work is more immediate and real than that created in a studio. There is a $15 cover.
