BOSTON: SOMI - WOMAN / LA FEMME

SOMI - WOMAN/LA FEMME will be performed at SCULLERS JAZZ CLUB(400 Soldiers Field Road, Allston, MA - 617-562-4111) on Thursday, May 22nd at 8:00 pm. This show marks the first musical collaboration between Rwandese-American vocalist Somi and French-Lebanese trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf. At its core, this effort mines the rich cultural heritage of both artists, articulated through the jazz idiom. Somi's lyrical inspiration was the thousands of unsung women who participated in protests and fought for change during recent dramatic social transition in North Africa and the Middle East, giving voice to the women who bore witness to the recent Arab Spring. Dinner/Show: $65 Show only: $25.

TORONTO: YOUNG ARTIST SERIES: SANDOR SCHWISBERG

Sandor Schwisberg, a 19 year-old pianist and composer from Richmond Hill, Ontario, will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Thursday through Friday, May 22nd through 24th at 6:00 pm as part of the club's Young Artist Seriers. Sandor first took up the piano at the age of 6, studying classical music through the Royal Conservatory. Since then he has performed all over Ontario in a variety of musical settings, including jazz groups, pit orchestras, R&B, alternative rock, and heavy metal bands. Sandor is a graduate of Unionville high school's Arts York music program, where he had many opportunities to perform solo and in collaboration with other musicians, visual artists, actors and dancers. Over the years, he has had the privilege of studying with some of Canada's finest pianists, including Ruben Vazquez, Nancy Walker, Cameron Chu, Brian Dickinson, Robi Botos, and Hilario Duren. Sandor is currently enrolled in his second year of the Humber College Bachelor of Contemporary Music program. No cover.

TORONTO: MIKE MURLEY TRIO CD RELEASE AT THE JAZZ BISTRO

The Mike Murley Trio will release their new CD 'Looking Back' at THE JAZZ BISTRO(251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Thursday through Saturday, May 22nd through 24th at 9:00 pm. "Looking Back", a new trio album from saxophonist Mike Murley, continues in the tradition of his two Juno award winning recordings featuring bassist Steve Wallace and guitarist Ed Bickert. Reg Schwager has replaced the now retired Bickert and brings his own subtle yet potent style to the music without radically changing the sound of the group. Always swinging and lyrical, this is mainstream chamber jazz at its best. There is a $15 cover.

WASHINGTON, DC: PAUL WINGO TRIO "CD RELEASE PARTY"

Paul Wingo will release his new CD atBLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Thursday, May 22nd with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Wingo started playing guitar at age 11. At 16, he began his studies with "Red" Dwyer and George Fitzgerald, and he attended the University of Maryland from 1964 to 1968. After college, he was a full time working musician, both teaching and performing. He continued to study, taking lessons from Billy Gibson, Frank Mullen, Howard Roberts, and Joe Pass. In 1976 he attended the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, New York, and from 1980 to 1992 he studied with Dr. Asher Zlotnik. Paul was a member of the Army Blues Band for 6 years, during which time he often played at the White House and the Vice President's residence. He has performed with many jazz artists, including Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Pepper Adams, Phil Woods, Herb Ellis, Charlie Byrd, and Bill Potts' and Mike Crotty's Big Bands.  Call for cover/minimum information.

BETHESDA, MD: BETHESDA-CHEVY CHASE HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ ENSEMBLE

The GRAMMY Award Winning Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School Jazz Ensemble will appear at BETHESDA BLUES & JAZZ SUPPER CLUB (7719 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD - 240-330-4500) on Thursday, May 22nd at 7:30 pm. The Jazz Ensemble will perform selections from a wide array of jazz genres including swing, Latin, funk, and shuffle. Also featured will be vocal soloists. Shool Alumni will also be back to perform in jazz combo and solo. A special performance by the high school staff will also highlight the evening. There is a $12 cover.
