BOSTON: DWIGHT & NICOLE SUMMERTIME SOUL
Dwight & Nicole, an American roots band formed by recording artists Dwight Ritcher and Nicole Nelson, will perform at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757 - ) on Saturday, July 26th with shows at 7:30 & 10:00 pm. Dwight & Nicole recently released their sophomore LP, the aptly titled Shine On,,an inspiring mashup of folk, blues, pop, jazz, gospel and reggae. Dwight & Nicole's performances have inspired comparisons to some of the greats - Etta James and John Lee Hooker, the Rolling Stones and the Staple Singers - but it's their fresh blend of spirited blues, rock and gospel that is propelling them to make their own mark on the music world. They have performed at countless world class venues and festivals including Montreal Jazz Festival, Life Is Good Festival, Symphony Hall, Fenway Park, Levon Helm's Midnight Ramble, and The Blue Note in NYC, while sharing the stage with iconic artists such as BB King, Buddy Guy, Dave Brubeck, Dr. Maya Angelou, Mavis Staples, Ray Lamontagne, Trombone Shorty, Levon Helm, Norah Jones, Dr. John, Wynton Marsalis, The Avett Brothers, Chuck Berry, Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Irma Thomas. TORONTO, ON: KIRK MACDONALD QUARTET FEATURING HAROLD MABERN
THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) is excited to welcome back, one of this country's finest jazz artists, this time in collaboration with a special out-of-town guest! Kirk MacDonald and Harold Mabern will soon be recording an album together on Addo Records; catch them live at Jazz Bistro on Friday & Saturday, July 25th & 26th at 8:00 pm before they do! An evening of standards as well as original compositions by both of these highly acclaimed musicians. Not to be missed! With an established reputation as one of Canada's leading saxophonists, Kirk MacDonald cut his first record at the age of thirteen. Throughout his career, he has received numerous awards, and has worked with many leading musicians in a variety of musical genres. He has performed on over 45 CDs as both leader and sideman, and has participated in numerous national broadcast recordings for CBC Radio. Harold Mabern, one of jazz's most enduring and dazzlingly skilled pianists, was born in Memphis, a city that produced saxophonists George Coleman and Charles Lloyd, pianist Phineas Newborn Jr. and trumpeter Booker Little. He was an unsung hero of the 1960s hardbop scene, performing and recording with many of its finest artists, and only in recent years has he begun to garner appreciation for his long-running legacy in jazz and the understated power of his talent. There is a $20 cover.
