BOSTON: JON CLEARY AT THE REGATTABAR

New Orleans' best-kept secret, Jon Cleary, will perform at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Thursday, July 24th at 7:30 pm. Cleary has a new record in the pipeline. His dream team of musicians has been recruited for an album of original compositions that he feels strongly will prove to be his best album yet. The tracks were recorded over several days deep in the bayou country of Louisiana and subsequently honed in his studio in the old Bywater district of New Orleans. Made in collaboration with multi Grammy winning producer John Porter (B.B. King, Keb Mo, Ryan Adams, Los Lonely boys) each of the carefully crafted songs is a delicate balance of the smooth and the rough; instantly memorable hooks over a set of sophisticated and soulful arrangements. A blend of musical intelligence with direct, accessible pop simplicity that draws from the tradition and yet is distinctively separate from it, these songs represent the many aspects of Cleary's musical personality as a multi instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter. There is a $20 cover.

TORONTO, ON: YOUNG ARTIST SERIES: NICK MACLEAN

Composer, arranger, pianist, synthist, educator and band leader, Toronto-based Nick Maclean will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Thursday, July 24th at 6:00 pm as part of the club's young artist series. Nick is a musical force to be reckoned with. Originally from Ottawa, Nick is a graduate of Humber college where he studied with many of Canada's jazz greats including Bernie Senensky, Nancy Walker and Dave Restivo. Upon graduating Nick immediately began his masters degree at the University of Toronto where he has been studying with Chris Donnelly, David Braid and David Occhipinti, and has been conducting research into synthesizer pedagogy. Nick's love of music began at a young age with his grandfather's purchase of a Fats Waller CD. In his late teens he quickly established himself on the Ottawa jazz scene by playing in many of Ottawa's local jazz spots including Vineyards and Cafe Paradiso (now closed). In his high school years Nick was actively engaged in just about every school band available to him. He is also an alumnus of the Ottawa Junior Jazz Band and the Nepean All-City Jazz Band. Fats Waller, Louis Armstrong, and many old school big bands were big influences for Nick in his formative years. Since, he's greatly expanded his palatte and enjoys drawing influences from Avishai Cohen, Brian Blade, Hiromi Uehara, Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, Snarky Puppy, Tool and Rage Against the Machine to name a few. No cover.
