BOSTON: MARIO CASTRO QUINTET WITH STRINGS: ESTRELLA DE MAR CD RELEASE CONCERT
The Mario Castro Quintet with Strings will present their Estrella De Mar CD release concert at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Wednesday, July 2nd at 7:30 pm. Composer and saxophonist Mario Castro formed the Mario Castro Quintet in 2009 during their education period at Berklee College of Music. In 2012 the group had not only played many of most prominent International Jazz Festivals (Newport, Montreal, etc) but they also released their debut album 'Primavera' on Greg Osby's Inner Circle Music label. After their release bandleader Mario Castro moved to New York City and with his arrival to the big apple Castro commenced writing music with a larger pallet of colors and sounds in mind. He was in pursuit for a unique sonic experience. This pursuit eventually lead to combining the brilliant, warm and visual sound of a string quartet with the trademark rumbling vibrant crash of the quintet. Mario Castro Quintet / Strings was born. In December of 2013 Mario Castro Quintet / Strings signed a record deal with Interrobang Records and went into the best and most legendary studio in NYC, Avatar Studios to record their debut album with strings. 'Estrella De Mar' (star of the sea) is an emotional ride. Beautifully written pieces brought to life by a stunning performance of each member of the group as well as special guest appearances by Casey Benjamin(from the Robert Glasper Experiment), David Sanchez, Dave Liebman, Emily Elbert, Jaime Woods, J. Hoard, among others. Call for cover/minimum information.
TORONTO: THE SPANDETTES AT THE JAZZ BISTRO
The Spandettes, a fiercely energetic disco band hailing from Toronto, will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Wednesdays, July 2nd, 16th & 30th at 8:00 pm. Drawing inspiration from jazz-funk, soul and rock-steady, their original music combines a classic 70's disco approach with a fresh and contemporary edge. The band's leading ladies, Alex Tait, Maggie Hopkins and Lizzy Clarke lead this dynamic 10-piece outfit through musical terrain that balances sugary sweet vocal stylings, air-tight horn passages and hard hitting grooves from their stellar rhythm section. Inspired by the infectious sunshine melodies and slick 2-step boogie grooves of The Pointer Sisters, The Jones Girls, and Destiny's Child, The Spandettes carry on the tradition of delivering soulful harmonies backed by some of the brightest young musicians from Toronto's jazz scene. There is a $12 cover.
