NYC: ARTURO O'FARRILL AFRO LATIN JAZZ ORCHESTRA SUNDAYS

Grammy Award winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill brings his Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra to BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Sundays at 9:00 & 11:00pm. Called the leader of the "first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz", O'Farrill was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte. The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra is the resident large format ensemble of the nonprofit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) founded by Arturo O'Farrill in 2007 and dedicated to preserving the music and heritage of big band Latin jazz, supporting its performance for new audiences, and educating young people in the understanding and performance of this important cultural treasure. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: BLUE NOTE JAZZ FESTIVAL PRESENTS: BRAD MEHLDAU & CHRISTIAN McBRIDE

Brad Mehldau and Christian McBride will perform at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Friday through Sunday, June 6th through 8th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. The show is part of the Blue Note Jazz Festival. One of the most lyrical and intimate voices of contemporary jazz piano, Brad Mehldau has forged a unique path, which embodies the essence of jazz exploration, classical romanticism, and pop allure. From critical acclaim as a bandleader and solo artist to major international exposure in collaborations with Pat Metheny, Anne Sofie von Otter, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Renee Fleming, Britten Sinfonia, and Joshua Redman, Mehldau continues to garner numerous awards and admiration from both jazz purists and music enthusiasts alike. Bassist extraodinaire, composer, arranger, educator, curator and administrator, Christian McBride, has been one of the most important and most omnipresent figures in the jazz world for 20 years. Sometimes hard to believe considering this man is not yet 40. There is a $35-$55 cover.

NYC: DION PARSON AND THE 21ST CENTURY BAND AT DIZZY'S

Dion Parson and the 21st Century Band will perform atDIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595 ) on Friday through Sunday, June 6th through 8th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. GRAMMY Award-winning drummer and composer Dion Parson has put together a powerhouse ensemble comprising seven of the world's finest musicians. Together with saxophonist Ron Blake (of the legendary Saturday Night Live Band), Parson formed 21st Century Band in 1998 to showcase the music of the U.S. Virgin Islands. It has since developed an innovative sound that mixes Virgin Islands traditions, such as Quelbe, and Caribbean infusions like reggae, calypso, soca, mento, ska, zouk, steel pan, chutney, and funk, with New Orleans and African overtones. The band features Dion Parson, drums; Ron Blake, saxophone; Terell Stafford (6/6-6/7) and Rashawn Ross (6/8), trumpet; Kenny Davis, bass; Xavier Davis, piano; Victor Provost, steel pan; and Alioune Faye, percussion/ sabar drums. This event offers a sneak peek at St. Thomas, the soon-to-be-released CD. Watch for original compositions and favorites like Bob Marley's "Three Little Birds," Sonny Rollins' "St. Thomas," and more.
