LOS ANGELES: UNKAL BEAN AT THE GARDENIA

Unkal Bean will perform at THE GARDENIA (7066 Santa Monica Boulevard, West Hollywood, CA - 323-467-7444) on Thursday, June 5th at 9:00 pm. Growing up underprivileged on the South Side of Chicago, Unkal Bean has become quite the entrepreneur, and is now the proprietor of his own thrift shop and recording studio in L.A.'s Tenderloin district, "Ofishu Tishu / Unkal Bean Entertainment." Poet, saxophonist, and fledgling author, he began rapping at the age of 10 and attracted the attention of a major music management company at the age of 11 - but he began his own independent record label, Supa Natural Productions, at the age of 18, and released his inaugural CD, Hard Times, Vol. 1, under the name "Kwansi." He released five more CD's as "Kwansi" before moving to Los Angeles in 1999, with his first official release as Unkal Bean, 7 Years in the Life, following in 2004. This performance marks his Gardenia debut. Call for cover/minimum information.

SAN FRANCISCO: ACOUSTIC ALCHEMY AT YOSHI'S

A powerhouse force in contemporary jazz, Acoustic Alchemy will perform atYOSHI'S (1330 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-655-5600) on Thursday, June 5th at 8:00 pm. Guitarists Greg Carmichael and Miles Gilderdale celebrate a remarkable two decades plus since 1987's Red Dust and Spanish Lace established the British ensemble as an ever evolving, powerhouse force in contemporary jazz. Their thousands of fans around the world may be feeling nostalgic, but the duo, while keeping their trademark acoustic guitar synergy front and center, is clearly committed to forging ahead. Carmichael explains the energy is the result of a natural chemistry he's developed with Gilderdale over the years since Gilderdale (formerly a backing guitarist with the band) became Carmichael's full partner after the passing of founding member Nick Webb in 1998 and the release that year of Positive Thinking. There is a $26-$51 cover.
