NYC: ROY HARGROVE AT THE BLUE NOTE

Trumpeter Roy Hargrove will perform at THE BLUE NOTE(131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Tuesday through Sunday, April 1st through 6th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. At 36, Hargrove has firmly established himself as among the premier players in jazz and beyond. Ever-stretching into more challenging and colorful ways to flex his musical chops, Hargrove has left indelible imprints in a vast array of artful settings. During his tenure on the Verve label alone, he has recorded an album with a hand-picked collection of the world's greatest tenor saxophonists (With the Tenors of Our Time), an album of standards with strings (Moment to Moment) and, in 2003, introduced his own hip hop/jazz collective The RH Factor with the groundbreaking CD Hard Groove (swiftly followed by the limited edition EP, Strength). Hargrove has also won Grammy• Awards for two vastly different projects. In 1997, Roy's Cuban-based band Crisol (including piano legend Jesus "Chucho" Valdes and wonder drummer Horatio "El Negro" Hernandez) won the Best Latin Jazz Performance Grammy for the album Habana. And in 2002, Hargrove, Herbie Hancock and Michael Brecker won Best Instrumental Jazz Album, Individual or Group, for their three-way collaboration Directions in Music. There is a $20-$35 cover.

NYC: UHADI: ALL-STARS OF JOHANNESBURG JAZZ

Uhadi: All-Stars of Johannesburg Jazz Featuring Sibongile Khumalo will perform at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Thursday through Sunday, April 3rd through 6th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Uhadi, an all-star jazz band from Johannesburg (Feya Faku, trumpet; McCoy Mrubata, saxophones/music director; Paul Hanmer, piano; Herbie Tsoaeli, bass; and Justin Badenhorst, drums), will set Dizzy's alight with its joyful, high-energy brand of jazz, as it celebrates 20 years of democracy in South Africa and honors the life and work of the late Nelson Mandela. Joining them on stage is "South Africa's first lady of song," mezzo-soprano Sibongile Khumalo. A frequent collaborator with legendary trumpeter Hugh Masekela, Khumalo has established herself as a leading lady of opera, appearing at venues like Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall, and the Barbican Centre. However, Khumalo's range is far broader than opera, as demonstrated in her award winning albums, which traverse styles from African indigenous and choral music, to Western classical and jazz. Don't miss the U.S. debut of this monumental collaboration. There is a $35-$45 cover.
