BOSTON: OMAR SOSA AFRI-LECTRIC SEXTET AT THE REGATABAR

The Omar Sosa Afri-Lectric Sextet will perform at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Wednesday, November 13th at 7:30 pm. The Sextet is an international band consisting of Joo Kraus, trumpet (Germany); Leandro Saint-Hill, saxophones and flute (Cuba); Peter Apfelbaum on saxophones and percussion (U.S.A.); Omar Sosa, piano (Cuba); Marque Gilmore, drums (U.S.A.); Childo Tomas on electric bass (Mozambique). Omar Sosa's new project began as a commission from the Barcelona Jazz Festival in 2009. The assignment: to compose and produce a tribute performance to Miles Davis' classic recording, Kind Of Blue, on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. Inspired by various musical elements and motifs from Kind Of Blue, Omar wrote a suite of music honoring the spirit of freedom in Davis' seminal work. Featuring trumpet and two saxophones, Eggun provides a medium for musical elements from Africa to shape and develop the music. The resulting jazz textures are further enhanced by the subtle and expressive use of electronic elements. At the heart of the recording is the spirit of Mother Africa. There is a $25 cover.

BOSTON: JONATHAN BUTLER AT SCULLERS WITH CHRISTMAS CD RELEASE

Jonathan Butler will celebrate the release of his new CD atSCULLERS JAZZ CLUB(400 Soldiers Field Road, Allston, MA - 617-562-4111) on Wednesday, November 13th at 8:00 pm. Santa Claus has a special treat to stuff in the stockings of all the good Jonathan Butler fans this Christmas: the first Christmas album by the two-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter-guitarist. Butler produced and arranged "Merry Christmas To You". Butler lives in California's San Fernando Valley with his family. Dinner/Show: $78 Show only: $38.

TORONTO: "RED HOT DUO" - ROBERTA HUNT & ALISON YOUNG

Roberta Hunt (piano, vocals) and Alison Young (saxophone) will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Wednesday, November 13th at 8:00 pm. With her personal and exuberant approach, Roberta Hunt adds her own voice to the jazz and blues repertoire. The over 15 years spent as rhythm pianist with the legendary New Orleans Jazz band 'Kid Bastien's Happy Pals' (Grossman's Tavern, Toronto) nurtured her love of New Orleans music which she now takes to the next level with Red Hot Ramble! In addition to time spent songwriting and solo vocal/piano performances, Roberta stays active in the Toronto/Southern Ontario music scene with Red Hot Ramble, Bertie and the Gents and sit-ins with various ensembles. Roberta has also participated in the French Quarter Festival in New Orleans; Davos Sounds Good Festival, Davos; Rapperswil Jazz Festival, Switzerland; Jazz in Mortigliano, Italy as well as Southern Ontario jazz festivals over her career. A relatively new force to reckon with in the Toronto music scene, Alison Young is from Ottawa where she honed her craft playing in local blues and R&B bands. After studying at the University of Toronto with Canadian sax greats Mike Murley and Kirk MacDonald, Alison has emerged as one of the Toronto music scene's hottest and most sought after reed players. Alison plays all kinds of music and has toured Canada with pop group Kelly and the Kellygirls and with the one and only Big Rude Jake! There is a $10 cover.

TORONTO: YOUNG ARTIST SERIES: ROBERT CHAPMAN

Robert Chapman will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Tuesday through Saturday, November 12th through 16th at 6:00 pm as part of the club's Young Artist series. Robert Chapman is an up-and-coming jazz guitarist from Toronto. From an early age he as been playing all types of music on various instruments but fell in love with jazz after starting to play with the Hamilton All Star Jazz Band during high school. After graduating high school Robert continued his jazz studies at both Mohawk College and Humber College where he had the opportunity to study and play with some of Canada's finest musicians such as Pat Collins, Mike Malone, Adrean Farrugia, Kieran Overs, Neil Swainson, and many more. During his final year at Mohawk College, Robert was a featured artist on Jazz FM 91.1's 'Jazzology' program. Currently Robert is performing all over the greater Toronto area and hopes to play more shows with his trio and quartet. No cover charge.

The Steve Lehman Octet will perform at the ATLAS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER (1333 H Street NE, Washington, DC - 202-399-7993) on Wednesday, November 13th at 8:00 pm as part of the Jazz at the Atlas series. Lehman's sound oscillates between jazz as we know it and jazz as it will be, evolving into an innovative new music genre. The widely acclaimed Steve Lehman has found balance in both the worlds. Lehman's octet presents selections from his latest CD. Call for cover/minimum information.

The Sean Jones Quartet will perform at BLUES ALLEY(1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141 - ) on Wednesday, November 14th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Trumpeter Sean Jones has revealed himself as among the most immensely expressive, versatile and gifted players of his generation. With each new project, the Warren, Ohio native has peeled back another layer to show us a fresh peek at his soul. As has become evident over the course of his five previous albums, Sean Jones is particularly adept at plumbing complex emotional depths through his trumpet playing and composing. So when he set his mind to recording a set of love songs, it should come as no surprise that he delved into the evocative nuances of love rather than the more obvious boys-meets-girl, boy-loses-girl generalities.
