Broadway and cabaret performer Raissa Katona Bennett (Phantom of the Opera, Chess) hosts an amazing array of Broadway and cabaret artists as THE CONCERTS AT TUDOR CITY GREENS holds its second show at Tudor City Greens Park (enter at Tudor City Place between East 42nd and East 43rd Streets) on Tuesday, June 1st at 6:00 pm,(rescheduled to rain date: Wednesday, June 2nd). Concerts will continue monthly through October 2010, featuring a variety of performers and themes. MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II

We've already sold 6 tickets to our 20th Anniversary Gala on July 13th - we have room for just 75, since we will be setting aside 10 press seats for the event, plus, with 20 performers, we had to cut back on reservation space. We've got conformation from 11 performers and we're waiting to hear from a trio we've contacted (one of the three might have a conflict), plus I have 3 more names chosen to be invited later today. I'm trying to keep a balance between performers I've delighted in over the past many years, plus some fairly new performers I've delighted in more recently. And, of course, I want to use performers who have "drawing power" and can help fill the room as well.

I've had two invitees who could not perform because of conflicts, each special choices because each represents a different style of cabaret - with 20 performers I hope to include as many of the different facets of the art of cabaret as possible.

At the July show we give out two special awards: The Jeff Matson Award, for a person or persons who have demonstrated the qualities that Jeff had: creativity, originality, mentoring, in the the fields of cabaret directing, creation, writing and or design. And we also present The Dottie Burman Songwriter Award, in honor of one of the originators of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE membership concept. Dottie helped us adjust to "going it alone" after I had been working for another cabaret organization for a few years, and facing retirement at the same time. It was her suggestion to offer memberships along the PBS model, to keep CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE going.

All subscribers are asked to offer suggestions/nominations for each of these two awards (I've very nearly settled on the Dottie Burman award recipient, but you might just have a better nominee I haven't thought of). Nominees may not be folks who have won either of these awards previously (see the website for past recipients). Please include the reasons for your nomination, not just a name. I will make the final choice, but I truly would like as many names as possible. In past years we have presented two Jeff Matson awards, and we might just do that again. All nominations will be kept confidential.

Once again we have included in this issue nearly all the cabaret news items for which releases have been received through June 18th. We try to stay three weeks ahead in our coverage in each issue - note that the CABARET EVENT LISTINGS on the website has items collected from these issues, going nearly to the end of June.

HERE & THERE - PART I - BLOG EDITION

HERE & THERE - PART I

This is our regular Monday issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, but going out on Tuesday this week since yesterday was a holiday. Based on e-mail addresses, about 30% of our subscribers received the newsletter at a business firm or via a business' server. So when a holiday falls on a Monday or Thursday publication date, we usually send out the issue the next day - or skip the issue entirely.

But this issue is actually a "combined" issue, with all the regular items we include in the Thursday issue (including all shows offering discounts to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members. We will be sending out an issue on Thursday, but it will only include the weekend cabaret news items that didn't make it here in time for today's issue, plus any important news items that can't wait until next Monday, plus a full rundown on our CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 20th ANNIVERSARY - not just the Gala on July 13th, but also all the changes and new features we will be adding (as well as trimming) as we enter our 21st year of publication.

CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE was the first mass-mailed, cabaret only publication, starting in July of 1990. It is also the first cabaret website, starting in 1997. And through the years we've remained the first, best and sometimes only source of cabaret news from around the world. We're proud to have led the way, and we're also happy to see other websites, blogs, newsletters and magazines with a cabaret theme following our lead. With the major media outlets nearly totally ignoring the art and the artists of cabaret, all organizations, publications and other media deserve the support of cabaret lovers everywhere!

I've gotten quite busy on the website preparing for our next wave of changes, hopefully to be ready for launch on July 1st. Meantime, some of my other work has been set aside, unfortunately. Currently I have 256 e-mails in the IN box that need attention or deletion (a lot are duplicates). These aren't news items, but rather comments, questions and requests. The requests come in as summer approaches, and folks ask what shows will be playing in this town or that, since the writer plans to visit there for vacation. I can answer many right now: In some cases I don't have a clue!

I check websites of major clubs regularly to keep informed of performers in the next few months, but it appears that either websites aren't being updated on a timely basis, or there are some booking problems and shows cannot be announced yet. I usually get the schedules of the few clubs that email them to me around the 15th of the previous month - not great advance notice, especially for performers with shows in the first week or two of a month.

And please don't assume that your posting on an organization fan list or member group mailing will find its way into the newsletter. In some instances, there are so many duplicated items, so many incomplete items, so many misspelled items, I don't bother to save them anymore.

My advice to you all (performers that is) for you to send me your press release directly ( stuhamstra@svhamstra.com) as soon as your show dates, themes and cast are solidified. Do not depend on the venue to do your PR work for you. Those days are long past. And once again, a flier is not a press release! Neither is a website link.

CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE promises to include every press release that is properly written and includes complete information, if it is deemed suitable for our subscribers. (A shocking, obscene word in the title of your show might draw attention, does not help CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, since spam filters on various web servers will toss out an entire issue because of just one obscene word, so I usually either censor the title or skip the item). Remember, freedom of speech ends at the spam filter!

We have a major revision to make to our listings page, as soon as I can get everything sorted out. A major booking at the RRAZZ ROOM in San Francisco cancelled with short notice so I have to remove all the information about that show and replace it with shows that have been booked in it's stead. The new show info, naturally, has been coming in piecemeal, but this morning we received a completely revised schedule and will make the adjustments today or tomorrow.

Broadway and cabaret performer Raissa Katona Bennett (Phantom of the Opera, Chess) hosts an amazing array of Broadway and cabaret artists as THE CONCERTS AT TUDOR CITY GREENS holds its second show at Tudor City Greens Park (enter at Tudor City Place between East 42nd and East 43rd Streets) on Tuesday, June 1st at 6:00 pm (rescheduled to rain date: Wednesday, June 2nd). Concerts will continue monthly through October 2010, featuring a variety of performers and themes. Guests scheduled to appear are Broadway’s Kristy Cates (Wicked), Zachary James (The Addams Family), Jana Robbins (Gypsy, Tale of the Allergist’s Wife) along with MAC & Bistro Award winner Karen Oberlin, MAC Award winners Hector Coris and Richard Skipper, and cabaret performers Shana Farr and Valerie Lemon. Accompanists will be David Caldwell, Jeff Cubeta, Kenneth Gartman, and Bill Zeffiro with Cindy Gooden on bass. The concerts are being produced in association with the Manhattan Association of Cabarets (MAC). The American-born vocalist has become one of the world's foremost jazz singers, earning international fame and critical acclaim for her captivating voice and style. Whether she is singing a sultry French chanson, a timeless American jazz standard, or a cool Brazilian Samba in Portuguese, Stacey always perfects the universal language of romance. NYC: The Debut Of Singer/Songwriter Nellie Mckay

FEINSTEIN'S at the Regency Hotel (540 Park Avenue, NYC - 212-339-4095) presents the debut of critically acclaimed singer, songwriter and actress Nellie McKay Tuesdays through Saturdays, June 1st through 12th. Performances are Tuesday through Thursday at 8:30 pm and Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. For her show at Feinstein's Ms. McKay will celebrate the release of her latest CD, Normal As Blueberry Pie: A Tribute to Doris Day. Normal As Blueberry Pie features 12 songs handpicked from over 600 recordings of Ms. Day's, as well as an original by McKay. The album bridges the big band era of the '40s from "Sentimental Journey" to "Dig It" with Day's later film career from "The Very Thought of You" from Young Man With a Horn to "Send Me No Flowers" from the film of the same name. Nellie McKay has performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and on numerous national television and radio shows, opened for Bo Diddley and Sting, dueted with Eartha Kitt, Trey Anastasio and Taj Mahal, interviewed Doris Day, and shared the stage with Odetta, Lou Reed, Elvis Costello and other notables in aid of various progressive causes.
