TORONTO: SCOTT WALKER: WHAT EXACTLY IS THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK?

Scott Walker brings his show "What Exactly Is The Great American Songbook?" to THE JAZZ BISTRO(251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Sunday, October 5th at 7:00 pm. One song was born out of a sarcastic comment to a publisher, and became a songwriter's most popular - but least favourite. Another song arrived unexpectedly in the mail. Still another was inspired by a songwriter's unrequited love affair with a beloved movie star. They all have one thing in common: they are part of the Great American Songbook. Drawing on his popular CBC feature, The Musical Almanac, Scott Walker explains - in story and song - how the Songbook was born, what defines it, and its enduring legacy. He also delves into some of the songs written more recently that have become part of what Scott calls Scott is known by his colleagues on the morning show at Classical 96.3 FM as the "singing newscaster". Broadcaster, actor, singer, and writer, Scott's theatre credits include Urinetown [Belfry Theatre], As You Like It [Blue Bridge], Anything Goes and Company [Reprise Concerts], Guys and Dolls [Rainbow Stage], Colette - the Colours of Love [Phoenix & Belfry Theatres], The Legend of the Dumbells [Charlottetown Festival] and Of Mice and Men [MTC]. Scott has also appeared on television and film, most recently in the Hallmark movie Freshman His critically-acclaimed solo CD contains selections from the Songbook, on which Scott is accompanied by a full 40-piece orchestra, including many members of the legendary Boss Brass. He is also the voice of the YouTube comedy sensation Spiders on Drugs - 34,000,000 hits and counting! Scott will also introduce his newest release, Someone I Don't Even Know, and tell the story behind this old/new love song that began with a dance.Scott is accompanied by Mark Camilleri on the piano. Anne Wootten directs. Call for cover/minimum information.

NYC: RICHARD PRYOR JR. AT THE METROPOLITAN ROOM

Richard Prior, Jr returns to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Friday, October 3rd at 7:00 pm; Saturday, October 4th at 4:00 pm; and Sunday, October 5th at 7:00 pm. Born in Peoria, Illinois, on April 10, 1962, at only 6 months, the first-born son of camed comic/actor Richard Pryor and his first wife, Patricia Watts, had to stay in the hospital for several weeks until he reached 5 pounds - and he was so small, his parents had to buy doll socks to fit his feet. In 1981, Richard entered the Navy and was stationed in San Diego and Virginia Beach - but it was during a stint in Scotland that he continued his desire to perform: He started lip-synching to songs, and started doing drag professionally for the first time back in Norfolk and Virginia Beach. Two years later, in 1983, he left the Navy, moved back to Peoria, and became involved in female-impersonation shows and the pageant system, performing on stage with dancers and actors and doing drag until the late 1980s. His mother, Patricia Price, died in 2003, and in 2005, when his comedic icon and award-winning father died of a heart attack, Richard decided to expand on everything he had been working for: As a tribute to his father, this talented singer and actor decided to re-launch his career. No stranger to doing all kinds of things, Richard did porter work but soon learned about the New York Artist Unlimited Theatre - Downeast Art Center - and landed a part in a play at CringeFest, substituting for a cast member. Also, at this time, Richard was becoming more involved with his other love: singing. Not only did he perform at the world-famous Birdland in New York City, as well as at the Metropolitan Room, he became a member and performer at the famed Friars Club. And he sang in numerous venues throughout the U.S., as well as at the Catskills in New York state, the Jazz Celebration Series in upstate New York, Chicago, Indiana and a five-show performance in Michigan. There is a $25 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

NYC: IRA LEE COLLINGS SINGS "OFF THE CHARTS" AT MAMA'S

Ira Lee Collings brings his show "Off the Charts" back to DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788) on Sunday, October 5th at 4:00 pm. Special Guests are Stella Pulo, Mary Sue Daniels, and Sheree Sano. The show will be featuring songs such as Nothing Can Stop Me Now, Comes Once In A Lifetime, Love Is Just Around The Corner, No Matter What Happens and It's So Nice To Have A Man Around The House. After many years of Open Mic's in New York City, he took a 25-year hiatus from Show Business and re-emerged six years ago in Cabaret with his full name, Ira Lee Collings. And now at age 79, he's back with another new show. There is a $10 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) presents the Dizzy Gillespie All Stars for a special Fall Sunday Brunch Residency. The band will perform brunch shows every Sunday with performances at 11:30 am & 1:30 pm, through December 28th. History has produced its share of great artists and great people - legendary jazz trumpeter John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie was both. As a performer, he left behind an incredible record of innovation and inspiration; as a composer, a broad repository of musical masterpieces; and as a man, a legion of friends, colleagues and compatriots who remember him with the same degree of love and esteem they reserve for his work. Officially authorized by Lorraine Gillespie, and under the leadership of Dizzy's long-time bassist John Lee, a selection of ensembles of varying sizes were formed, featuring many of the wide variety of musicians who worked with Dizzy plus some newer talents from the jazz scene. Together they are working to continue the legacy of both the music and the personality of this great jazz master who had such a profound impact on twentieth century music. There is a $35 cover. **Price includes brunch, music and a drink.**

Special Memorial 'Remembering Erv Raible' to be held this Sunday, October 5th

Someone pointed out to me on Tuesday afternoon that I didn't mention the special memorial 'Remembering Erv Raible' to be held this Sunday, October 5th at 3:00 pm at JUDSON MEMORIAL CHURCH (55 Washington Square South, NYC - 212-477-0351 - http://www.judson.org/ ). Honestly, I never received a press release and apparently didn't see a posting on FaceBook that someone made (and I've seen nothing posted in the past several days, including today). I know little else except that there is a reception to follow the service. I assume there will be many performers taking part. Reservations should be e-mailed to CelebratingErv@gmail.com or all Sherryy Eaker at 917-239-5467.
PS: Facebook admits that postings are seen by only about 16% of those on your follower list - they want you to take out an ad to reach more.
