L.A.: FRANCESCA AMARI'S GILDA RADNER TRIBUTE AT THE GARDENIA

On Thursday, May 10th at 9:00 pm, cabaret vocalist Francesca Amari will reprise her tribute show, "YOU MAKE ME LAUGH: A Love Song to Gilda Radner" at THE GARDENIA (7066 Santa Monica Boulevard, West Hollywood, CA - 323-467-7444). Amari debuted the show at last year's Gilda's LaughFest in Grand Rapids, MI, a 10-day festival of laughter, which included such notables as Bill Cosby, Betty White, Margaret Cho and more, to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of Gilda's Club West Michigan. She developed the show with the input of nationally-renowned cabaret star Andrea Marcovicci, who served as her creative consultant. The show highlights moments of Gilda's fascinating life, including her rise to stardom, her marriage to Gene Wilder and her struggle with cancer. Much of the material comes from Gilda's autobiography, "It's Always Something". Shelly Markham serves as Music Director. The show features music from the American Popular Songbook, pop music, Broadway and the cabaret world, and includes such gems as "Pure Imagination," Markham's "You Make Me Laugh," "My Pa" and "Honey (Touch Me With My Clothes On." A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Pennies For Penny, a support organization founded to raise money for 3-year-old Penny Buttrick, who is fighting Neuroblastoma (http://www.pennies4penny.org/ ). There is a $15 cover plus a 2-drink minimum (or dinner).

Lorinda Lisitza brings back her nightclub act, "Triumphant Baby! On Monday, May 7th, singer-pianist Elizabeth Doyle celebrates Peggy Lee's birthday month as part of the "Sophisticated Ladies" series atTHE JAZZ SHOWCASE (806 South Plymouth Court, Chicago, IL - 312-360-0234), with sets from 8:00 to 11:00 pm. To honor the life and lyrics of the woman Duke Ellington dubbed "The Elegant One," Doyle will be joined by special guests Jim Cox, Chris White, Frank Portolese and Tim Davis plus Peggy Lee sidemen, trumpet player Art Hoyle drummer Gerry Coleman,and pianists Larry Novak, Bobby Schiff and Frank Winkler. Lee wrote with such luminaries as the Duke, Cy Coleman, Michel LeGrand, Steve Allen, ex-husband and guitarist Dave Barbour, Quincy Jones, Harold Arlen, Johnny Mandel, Marian McPartland, Victor Young and many others. Lee's recording of Mirrors, a song suite by Lieber and Stoller, remains a landmark in concept recording projects and contains "Is That All There Is" and "Feelin' Too Good Today Blues." Along with Sinatra and Tony Bennett, Peggy Lee was one of few singers who had hits in the 1940s and continued to "make the charts" throughout the 1960s. There is a $15-$25 cover.

Lavin worked in nightclubs in New York's Greenwich Village before her big break in the chorus of her first Broadway musical "A Family Affair." Her first leading role on Broadway was in 1965 in the musical "It's a Bird ... It's a Plane ... It's Superman." One of her signature numbers in that show was "You've Got Possibilities," which is among the 12 tracks on her recently-released, first-ever CD, "Possibilities," featuring a mix of Broadway standards and cabaret songs, with musical arrangements by Billy Stritch and released by Ghostlight Records. Beloved for her work on stage, film and TV, Linda Lavin is currently appearing on Broadway in "The Lyons" by Nicky Silver, earning some of the best reviews of her remarkable career. NYC: PEGGY HERMAN CELEBRATES THE CD RELEASE AT FEINSTEIN'S

Peggy Herman releases a brand new recording of her critically acclaimed show, "Herman on Herman," her tribute to Broadway legend Jerry Herman, atFEINSTEIN'S at the Regency Hotel(540 Park Avenue, NYC - 212-339-4095) on Sunday May 6th at 7:30 pm. The one-night-only concert features many of the songs from the show's premiere at the Metropolitan Room in May of last year, plus additional material that was added to the project in the intervening months. With arrangements by the renowned music director Alex Rybeck, "Herman on Herman (with a Touch of Merman)" gives the Jerry Herman songbook a whole new spin, lending a fresh take on these classic Broadway show tunes. Backing Herman on Herman are Rybeck on piano, Jered Egan on bass and Rex Benincasa on drums and percussion. The same threesome play on the album, augmented by strings, brass, winds, and guitarist Sean Harkness. "Herman on Herman ... Peggy Sings Jerry" (the CD's title) features exciting new arrangements of songs from "Hello Dolly!" "Mame," "La Cage aux Folles," "Mack & Mabel," and other Herman hits. In the studio, Herman and Rybeck added new songs, including "The Best of Times is Now," "Before the Parade Passes By," and "If He Walked Into My Life." There is a $30-$50 cover plus a $25 food/drink minimum.

Singer/songwriter Richard Eisenberg is presenting a full revue of his original songs, appropriately called SMILE ON MY FACE, on Sunday, May 6th at 1:00 pm at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATRE (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909). Joining forces with Richard is MAC and Bistro Award winning director Peter Napolitano and MAC Award winning musical director Barry Levitt. The show will feature the vocal talents of Erin Cronican, Rob Langeder, Stacie Perlman, and Adam Shapiro. Eisenberg has long been a fixture in the New York Cabaret/Open Mic scene, and this is his debut solo cabaret appearance. There is a $20 cover plus a $15 food/drink minimum.

Stephen Foster returns to the stage after a long absence at Bette Davis in "BitchSlap!" (A comedy about Bette Davis/Joan Crawford and Hedda Hopper) in the West Coast premiere of the show at MACHA THEATRE/FILMS (1107 North Kings Road, West Hollywood, CA - 323-314-6332). The show is written by Darrin Hagin and Produced and Directed by Odalys Nanin. Others in the cast are Michael Taylor Gray, Therese Mc Laughlin, Aly Trasher and Jeanne Carr. The show previews on Friday, May 11th and begins it's official run on Saturday, May 19th with performances Fridays & Saturdays at 8:00 pm and Sundays at 7:00 pm through June 16th. This play mimes the divine feud between Joan Crawford and Bette Davis from the first Oscar to the final bitch static slapping scene in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane! NYC: "MIDTOWN JAZZ AT MIDDAY" SALUTES ITS 31st SEASON WITH GALA EVENT

Over the three decades, New York jazz aficionados have included ST. PETER'S CHURCH - SANCTUARY(619 Lexington Avenue, NYC - 212-935-2200) as a favorite place to hear both the field's legendary artists and cream of the crop newcomers. There, at noon on Wednesdays they could catch performances by many of the same artists who show up nightly at Birdland, the Blue Note and other "name" locales. On Wednesday, May 9th at 7:00 pm, saluting the loyal audiences who flock regularly to the intimate setting of the church's sanctuary, producer Ronny Whyte will host a 90-minute star-laden concert and reception. The concert will feature an 18-piece "big band" and many of the jazz stars who have played the venue since its beginnings in 1982. The talent lineup includes Barbara Carroll, Jay Leonhart, Bucky Pizzarelli, Marlene VerPlanck, producer/ jazzologist Whyte himself, and Russ Kassoff's 18-piece band with Catherine Dupuis. Others performing include Junior Mance, Daryl Sherman, Art Baron, Jann Parker, Marion Cowings, Alex Leonard, Boots Maleson, Chris Gillespie, Frank Tate, Ed Laub, Carol Fredette, Eric Comstock, and Mauricio de Souza. A wine and-light hors d'oeuvres reception after the concert will afford attendees an opportunity to meet and chat with some of the artists. In its infancy, the Midtown Jazz at Midday series was produced by the late Edmund Anderson as part of the church's "Jazz Ministry" program. His widow, Joan Uttal, now serves as co-producer with Mr. Whyte. The program has fostered musical memorials for Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, and other celebrated musicians in jazz history. A donation of $25 per person is suggested.
