LONDON: JUDY CARMICHAEL AT THE CRAZY COQS

Grammy nominated American pianist, vocalist, songwriter, Judy Carmichael, will debut some of her new compositions, along with gems from the American Songbook, in an evening of swinging piano, sultry vocals and sassy humour at THE CRAZY COQS AT BRASSERIE ZEDEL(20 Sherwood St, Piccadilly, London W1F 7ED - 020 7734 4888) on Tuesday throughSaturday, May 10th through 14th, at 8:00 pm. Count Basie nicknamed Judy "Stride" in reference to her mastery of that early piano style popularized by Thomas "Fats" Waller and James P. Johnson. A favourite at Crazy Coqs, Judy Carmichael plays to sell-out crowds every visit. Her concerts in June 2015 at the City of London Festival and Ronnie Scott's were sold out weeks before the events. Judy's frequent musical partner, guitarist Colin Oxley, will join her, as well as some surprise guests. Judy Carmichael appears frequently on radio and TV throughout the world and maintains a busy international touring schedule. She is popular with both jazz and cabaret audiences with her soulful, swinging interpretations of the Great American Songbook, and equally impressive hilarious, improvisational anecdotes. Her wit and musical knowledge come together on her weekly radio broadcast Judy Carmichael's Jazz Inspired, now in its 17th year, where she talks with celebrated creative people about their love for jazz and how it inspires them, everyone from Seth MacFarlane and Chevy Chase to Robert Redford and Billy Joel. Call for reservations and cover/minimum information.

LONDON: DAVID GORDON TRIO 'ALEXANDER SCRIABIN'S RAGTIME BAND'

The David Gordon Trio presents 'Alexander Scriabin's Ragtime Band' at THE CRAZY COQS AT BRASSERIE ZEDEL (20 Sherwood St, Piccadilly, London W1F 7ED - 020 7734 4888) on Saturday, May 14th, at 10:30 pm as part of the club's Swing Night Series. 1915: the world in turmoil. People everywhere have gone dancing mad. The transatlantic trade in musical styles continues unabated. In this brand-new project, the David Gordon Trio brings these musical strands together to create an amazing tapestry of music from this time: boogie-woogie, tango and choro rub shoulders with the eponymous rag, which gets the makeover to end all makeovers, and with interpretations of Scriabin's miniatures - his billets-doux to eternity - seen through the prism of popular music of the time. The David Gordon Trio is made up of the 'extravagantly resourceful' pianist David Gordon, 'Mr Latin' himself, Paul Cavaciuti, and the finest jazz double bass player to come out of Ghana, Jonty Fisher. The trio has made several tours of the UK and Denmark, which have included concerts at PizzaExpress Jazz Club, Dean Street, Copenhagen Jazzhouse and the Aarhus Jazz Festival. The trio's five CDs have met with critical acclaim, especially in Japan, where they have sold more than 6000 copies. A prize-winning composer, David's tune Angel Feet ('Great track' Steve Rubie, 606 Club) appears in Sher Music's publication The European Real Book, while back in the UK, tracks from the trio's two latest CDs have been featured on thejazz.com and on jazzfm. Recent performances include a live session on BBC Radio 3, a sold-out concert at Hall Two in King's Place, as well as a collaboration on a newly-commissioned work by David, Inspired by Bach, with the London Chamber at Cadogan Hall in London in 2013. Call for reservations and cover/minimum information.
