NYC: CEDAR WALTON QUARTET AT BIRDLAND
Master pianist Cedar Walton will be performing at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, March 8th through 12th, with performances at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Walton has enjoyed an uptempo career for over fifty years. Maintaining an active touring schedule, Walton has accompanied an ever-increasing list of jazz greats while also leading his own successful groups. From his native Dallas, Texas, Walton ventured to New York and began working locally with Lou Donaldson, Gigi Gryce, Sonny Rollins and Kenny Dorham before landing his first touring job with J.J. Johnson. During a three-year association with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers in the early 1960s, Walton emerged as a composer, contributing originals like "Mosaic" and "The Promised Land" to the group's recordings for the Blue Note and Riverside labels. From there, Walton embarked on a variety of projects with artists such Ron Carter, Billy Higgins, Harold Land, Bobby Hutcherson, Curtis Fuller, Buster Williams and Billy Higgins, Milt Jackson, Frank Morgan, Dexter Gordon, vocalists Ernestine Anderson and Freddy Cole, and The Trumpet Summit Band. There is a $30/$40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
