PHILADELPHIA CABARET!: SUSIE MEISSNER AT CHRIS JAZZ CAFE

Susie Meissner will be appearing atCHRIS JAZZ CAFE (1421 Sansom Street, Philadelphia, PA - 215-568-3131) on Thursday, May 30th with sets from 8:00 pm to midnight. She is accompanied by her band (John Swana - EVI; Larry McKenna - sax; Byron Landham - Drums; Lee Smith - Bass; and John Shaddy - Piano). Susie sings and swings with a lush tone and playful rhythm. Growing up in Buffalo, N.Y., Susie surrounded herself in music through piano and vocal lessons, choirs, glee clubs, school musicals, and performances with local professional singing groups. Her grandmother played stride piano and her sheet music from the 20s and 30s inspired Susie to look back into the Great American songbook. In her youth, Susie began to explore the world of jazz through the recordings of Ella Fitzgerald, and after witnessing the performances by jazz greats such as Earl "Fatha" Hines, Kenny Burrell and Nancy Wilson, her interest was piqued and she started down the jazz discovery road. To date, Susie has recorded or performed with Jazz greats including Wycliffe Gordon, Brian Lynch, Joe Magnarelli, John Swana, Freddie Hendrix, Martin Wind, Dean Johnson, Tim Horner, Lee Smith, Byron Landham and Matt Wilson. NYC: "I'M A STRANGER HERE MYSELF" EXTENDED THROUGH JUNE 9th AT THE YORK THEATRE

NYC: "I'M A STRANGER HERE MYSELF" EXTENDED THROUGH JUNE 9th AT THE YORK THEATRE

By popular demand, THE YORK THEATRE at Saint Peter's Church (619 Lexington Avenue, NYC - 212-935-5820 ext. 25) has announced the return engagement of the new musical I'm a Stranger Here Myself, written and performed by Mark Nadler, with Franca Vercelloni on accordion, Jessica Tyler Wright on vioin and directed by David Schweizer. Performances will resume on Tuesday evening, May 28th at 7:00 pm and continue through Sunday afternoon, June 9th at 2:30 pm. The heart, soul and tears of the music that helped define Broadway in its golden age was inextricably linked to a magical (and sinister) several years in pre-WWII Berlin. It was a brief period when the creative strangers of the society - poets, playwrights, Jews, gays and artists of all sorts - were embraced and even exalted. And it's this smart, sexy, jazz-fueled, booze-soaked era that the astonishing, multi-award winning entertainer Mark Nadler brings to life in I'm a Stranger Here Myself - the deeply emotional undercurrents of a society about to break itself into a million pieces. I'm a Stranger Here Myself will play the following performance schedule: Tuesday at 7:00 pm, Wednesday through Friday at 8:00 pm, Saturday at 2:30 pm & 8:00 pm and Sunday at 2:30 pm. Tickets are $67.50.

They transport audiences to their unique universe - a wonderful imagining of how commercial 1940s radio should have been done. When Eldar Djangirov (pronounced john-'gear-ov) was signed to Sony Classical at the age of 17, the young pianist from Kansas City was already well known for his prodigious pyrotechnics and precocious knowledge of the bebop tradition. Along the way, he's had the good fortune to meet and work with the masters including Dr. Billy Taylor, Marian McPartland, Dave Brubeck, Michael Brecker, Wynton Marsalis, Joshua Redman, Nicholas Payton, Harvey Mason, Ron Carter, Pat Martino and many others. Through these opportunities and other wonderful musical experiences, Eldar continues to explore new frontiers through composing and performing, enabling him to ultimately to realize his own musical vision.
