LONDON CABARET HIT!: AUSTRALIAN MUSICAL STAR MAKES WEST END DEBUT AS LIZA (ON AN E)

LONDON CABARET HIT!: AUSTRALIAN MUSICAL STAR MAKES WEST END DEBUT AS LIZA (ON AN E)

Following several sell-out seasons and an acclaimed tour of Australia, Trevor Ashley, one of the foremost musical theatre stars from Down Under, will make his West End debut as the irrepressible, incomparable and infamously iconic Liza Minnelli in LIZA (on an E) at the VAUDEVILLE THEATRE (90 Long Acre, Covent Garden, London WC2E 9RZ - 0844 412 4663 - http://www.lizaonane.com/ ) from Tuesday 14th to Saturday 18th May, in a strictly limited six show season. Showtimes are Tuesday through Friday at 8:00 pm and Saturday at 4:00 & 8:00 pm. From her marriage to Australia's song-and-dance darling, Peter Allen, to her notorious pill-popping and ubiquitous showbiz family, 'Liza' will dish the dirt on her extraordinary life like you've never seen her before, accompanied by a live on stage band, as she raises the rafters and brings the entire house down with power-packed performances of all her greatest hits. The critically acclaimed and (at least a little bit) controversial Liza (on an E) is an evening that will have you laughing, crying and screaming for more as the supremely talented Ashley channels Liza (and her alter egos), with guest appearances by her mother. Raucous, ruinous and just the right (or wrong) side of risque, it's a rollercoaster ride of riotous proportions. Call for cover/minimum information.

NEW COLUMN BY SUE MATSUKI POSTED OVERNIGHT - IT'S A RAVE FOR BILLIE ROE!!!

Sue Matsuki has sent us a new "Views, Reviews & News" column - her first for 2013! I was so overjoyed to get this one - which includes several reviews and recommendations, I posted it on the website right away - photos and links to be added later! Here's a little bit of what she had to say about Billie Roe's show, currently playing at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 )

METROSTAR WINNER BILLIE ROE in 1978 NYC UNDERGROUND at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 ) - remaining shows: TONIGHT, Friday, May 17th at 7:00 pm; and Saturday, May 18th at 9:30pm. - $20 cover plus a 2-drink minimum. $15 cover for members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.

First Impressions: She's in GREAT voice. The band is kickin'. Is Billie a rocker chick at heart? Why the hell is this show starting with ugly city noises created by the band? Oh, this is going to be SO good.

And good it was GREAT in fact! After reading her bio, the answer to my question about Billie being a rocker chick is YES! Channeling her inner Joplin on "Dead and Lovely", "Make it Rain" and "Virginia Avenue", she also had substantial jazz chops on "Altar Boy" and acting chops on pretty much everything. "Soldier's Things" was stunning. Billie is a phenomenal actress and an even more phenomenal singer - what a voice! On "I'll Take New York" she affected a "New York, New York" feel with a Liza persona/vocal quality ending in this intentional off-pitched money note with the band doing the horrible city noise thing again - WOW! Just WOW! (You draw your own conclusions on this one!)
