NYC: SWING THAT MUSIC - DANNY BACHER SINGS 3 LOUIS AT THE MET

Jazz singer/ saxophonist, Danny Bacher, and his band present a tribute to the three Louis! (Armstrong/ Prima/ Jordan) at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Tuesday, August 25th at 7:00 pm. This show also celebrates Danny's debut recording, "Swing That Music!" And the CD marks the recording debut of an extraordinary talent, vocalist-saxophonist Danny Bacher (pronounced: Back-er). Danny unleashes his substantial chops and signature wit to pay homage to three jazz firebrands - Louis Armstrong, Louis Prima, and Louis Jordan - in a series of kinetic tunes that vibrantly reimagine classics from the three Louis' repertoire for today's audience. Danny hails from New Jersey and was raised on classic jazz and the American popular songbook. Vocally, he possesses a warm smoky tone; instrumentally, he favors a lush and lyrical soprano sax style that complements perfectly his role as storyteller. Trained in music, theater, and comedy, Danny is a born performer, perfectly poised to summon the spirit and legacies of the three Louis. Danny understands the 360 of entertainment - he's also a proven playwright and comedian who first garnered notice off-Broadway and has toured nationally and internationally with his original work. Joining Danny is an all-star lineup of jazz luminaries: Warren Vache -Cornet, Jay Rodriguez- Tenor Sax, Pete McGuinness -Trombone, Jason Teborek - Piano, Dean Johnson -Bass, Tim Horner- Drums, along with guest vocalist Vanessa Racci. Marilyn Maye directs. There is a $22.50 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

NYC: JAZZ LEGEND ANNIE ROSS TUESDAYS THE METROPOLITAN ROOM

Jazz legend Annie Ross continues her unprecedented, record-breaking, multi-year run at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440), every Tuesday night at 9:30 pm. Ms. Ross has been an abundant contributor to the art of jazz for over 50 years. Born in the UK, she has been a permanent resident of the USA for many years and a US citizen since 2001. Annie Ross is one of the pioneers of vocalese and the composer of "Twisted", one of the most well known examples of that art, as well as "Farmers Market", "Jackie" and many others. A founding member of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, considered the greatest jazz vocal ensemble of all time, her influence is present in all subsequent practitioners of vocalese. "Twisted" has been recorded by a host of vocalists, including some not normally associated with jazz, including Joni Mitchell and Bette Midler. There is a $25 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

THE METROPOLITAN ROOM ADVERTISES IT'S EVENTS ON CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 

NYC: MAMA'S NEXT BIG ACT - NEW 12 WEEK CONTEST! FINAL NIGHT

DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788) opened the first annual "Mama's Next BIG Act!" began on Tuesday, June 9th and continues every week at 9:30 pm. The contest will run for 12 consecutive weeks, every Tuesday through August 25th. The event is a bigger than average, 12-week competition that mixes styles and genres. Voted by the audience and a cavalcade of celebrity judges, the contest will invite solo, duo and group acts in the following categories: music, magic, drag, burlesque, and variety. Mama's Next BIG Act! is open to any musical act over the age of 18. Musical acts may consist of solo, duo or groups, and may be of any genre or style. Acts may use the club's pianist or bring their own. A guitar or bass may also be used. Tracks may be used, but live music is preferred. Vocal Groups, Drag Artists, Variety and Burlesque acts are encouraged to submit, as well as Solo and Duo Vocal Acts. Each week, contestants will be eliminated based on votes by the judges as well as the audience. There is a $12 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

NYC: MIKE SCHWITTER MAKES 54 BELOW DEBUT

Mike Schwitter will make his solo concert debut at 54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551) on Tuesday, August 25th at 7:00 pm. Mike was most recently seen in NY in the Broadway revival of Pippin (Lewis) after coming back from the First National Tour of The Book of Mormon. His regional credits include Gabe in Next to Normal (Regional Premier at Ensemble Theater of Cincinnati and North Carolina Theater), Jesus Christ Superstar, Love Changes Everything, and Chamberlain the Musical. Mike has also performed in several opera workshops taking place in Carnegie Hall and throughout Italy. Mike will be belting out his favorite songs from many styles of music, with a few surprises and special guests along the way. If you're a fan of fun, then this is the concert for you! Anything can happen. There is a $25-$65 cover plus a $25 food/drink minimum.

NYC: 54 BELOW PRESENTS BEN THOMPSON

Ben Thompson returns to 54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551) in his solo show debut on Tuesday, August 25th at 9:30 pm. Ben is no stranger to the Broadway stage, having appeared in the original companies of American Idiot, Holler if Ya Hear Me, and Matilda as Miss Trunchbull. Additionally, he's appeared off-Broadway in the revivals of Rent and Carrie, and in the West End in Twelfth Night and Richard II. Previously at 54 Below, he was seen in Tenenbaum and Wanzor's The Worst People You Know, as well as Sweet Dreams in Concert, a reimagining of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Audiences won't want to miss this fun and entertaining evening! Featuring guest performances by Gerard Canonico (Spring Awakening), Nicholas Christopher (Motown), Tamika Lawrence (If/Then), and Kat Nejat (Lysistrata Jones). There is a $25-$60 cover plus a $25 food/drink minimum.

NYC: JOE'S PUB PRESENTS NICK GARRIE

Nick Garrie performs at JOE'S PUB at THE PUBLIC THEATRE (425 Lafayette Street, NYC - 212-967-7555) on Tuesday, August 25th at 7:30 pm. Garrie is renowned in psychedelic collectors' circles for his 1970 debut The Nightmare of J.B. Stanislas, a Baroque pop masterpiece effectively buried by nonexistent distribution and promotion. Born June 22, 1949, in Yorkshire, England, to a Russian father and Scottish mother, Garrie spent the majority of his adolescence at a French boarding school. He began writing songs while attending Warwick University, but his interests primarily lay in surrealist literature and poetry and he didn't mount a performing career until 1968, playing bars and restaurants while backpacking through the south of France. There is a $15 cover.

NYC: GIRL VERSUS CORINTH AT JOE'S PUB

Medea's back and she's putting the pulse back in expulsion. Fresh off it's run as a part of DC's Capital Fringe, GIRL VERSUS CORINTH moves to JOE'S PUB at THE PUBLIC THEATRE(425 Lafayette Street, NYC - 212-967-7555) on Tuesday, August 25th at 9:30 pm. The show is a "wildly ambitious" new musical returning to New York which synthesizes an electro-pop score, "slick choreography," feminist history, and the text of Euripides's Medea into a "beautifully produced" theatrical event that is "Design-wise ... a marvel." Come hear Medea retell the events that make her infamous, and invoke the spirit of women who've found justice all their own. Words and music by Daniel Baird Jr, created in collaboration with and directed by Catie Sanderson Davis. There is a $12 cover.
