NYC: 13th STREET REP IS MAD ABOUT THE BOY!

NYC: 13th STREET REP IS MAD ABOUT THE BOY!

The 13TH STREET REPERTORY THEATER (50 West 13th Street, NYC) is presenting ASCAP Award-winning writer/director Chip Deffaa's high-spirited new show, "Mad About the Boy," on Sundays at 2:00 & 7:00 pm. With a cast of 18, this unique musical is the biggest, most ambitious offering scheduled for the theater this year. Deffaa (who used to cover cabaret for THE NY POST) conceived the show - a celebration of songs, past and present, with a gay sensibility - as a reminder that there were gay songs long before the advent of the modern gay rights movement. The eclectic score mixes new originals by Deffaa with vintage numbers by Ma Rainey, Tony Jackson, and others. Deffaa, who has become the theater's most widely produced playwright - this is his fifth production at the theater in the last 12 months - is widely credited with spurring a Renaissance at the 13th Street Rep. His recent productions there have included such hit shows as "One Night with Fanny Brice," "Irving Berlin's America," "Theater Boys," and "The Irving Berlin Ragtime Revue" - all of which have gotten cast albums and/or publication deals. An album of songs from "Mad About the Boy" is now in the works. Deffaa will host talkback sessions and teach-ins on the history of gay songs and musical theater, after performances. Ken Adams - who understudies all roles in the show, both male and female - will fill in for Deffaa at the May 17th matinee session, when Deffaa will be out of town, due to a lecture commitment. Tickets are $30 / $20 for students/seniors. More at http://www.13thstreetrep.org
