NYC: CAROL SHEDLIN: CHILD OF THE '30S - ENCORE PERFORMANCES
Carol Shedlin celebrates her legacy as a Child of the '30s in her newest cabaret show at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788) with two encore performances of her " Child of the '30s" show on Tuesday, March 10th & Monday, March 16th, both at 7:00 pm. She is joined by musical director Jon Delfin at the piano and Boots Maleson on bass. Carol is thrilled to present her sophisticated evening of songs from the 1930s, filled with the romance of that black-and-white, cut-on-the-bias, Art Deco world of "Let's Pretend". Carol sings a collection of often offbeat and quirky (but always beguiling) period tunes, and entertains with her recollections about special moments from her somewhat eccentric, early childhood. Celebrating more than twenty years of "impeccable musical taste," Carol continues her tradition of creating cabaret evenings featuring an intriguing song list, mixing old favorites with lesser-known rarities. NYC: ERIC MICHAEL GILLETT: THE WIT AND WISDOM OF NOEL COWARD
Eric Michael Gillett brings to life the Wit and Wisdom of Noel Coward in his new show at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATRE (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909), on Tuesday, March 10th at 7:30 pm. Musical Director is Rick Jensen with Matt Scharfglass on bass and Jonathan Kantor on reeds. The epitome of wit and sophistication, Sir Noel Coward's storied career spanned more than half a century. In Man About Town, award-winning cabaret artist Eric Michael Gillett focuses on the music and lyrics of the man known as the Master. After acclaimed evenings dedicated to Harold Arlen, Stephen Sondheim, Craig Carnelia, Lorenz Hart, and his revue in development, The Amanda McBroom Project, Man About Town allows Eric Michael to focus an entire evening on the wit and wisdom of one of the twentieth century's most admired and brilliant artists. From "What's Going to Happen to the Tots," "Don't Put Your Daughter on the Stage, Mrs. Worthington" and "Uncle Harry" to "Come the Wild, Wild Weather" and "London Pride," Man About Town explores the Noel Coward musical legacy in all of its considerable glory. Eric Michael Gillett is known as a director, an actor, a singer, and a teacher. He is the recipient of both the MAC Award for Outstanding Direction and the Dick Gallagher Award, bestowed by the Mabel Mercer Foundation, for his unique contributions to the art of cabaret. NYC: YVONNE CONSTANT: "WHAT NOW? A TRIBUTE TO MIKE"
Yvonne Constant, born on the left bank of Paris, performs her latest show "What Now? A Tribute to Mike" at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Tuesday, March 10th at 7:00 pm. Constant began her career as a ballet dancer, but because of her comedic flair and charismatic personality, the other dancers urged her to become a musical comedy performer instead. Yvonne was cast to play multiple roles for the Broadway production of "La Plume de Ma Tante" and won a Tony award. When she did "The Gay Life" with Barbara Cook, Yvonne received a New York Drama Critics Citation as on of the season's Most Promising Actresses. Because of her quick wit, dynamic personality, and ability to do repartee, Johnny Carson had Yvonne on his show a record 45 times! Richard Rodgers saw her on the Tonight Show and immediately chose her for a principal role in "No Strings". After "No Strings" Yvonne played the French au pair in the Broadway Comedy, "Come Live With Me". In the movies, Yvonne Constant is best remembered in Disney's "Monkeys, Go Home!" with Maurice Chevalier. More recently, she played the French chanteuse, Annette, in the television mini-series "Sins" with Joan Collins. In addition, she has narrated or dubbed over 20 French movies including the much acclaimed, "Parfait", and was also the voice of Simone de Bauvoir. In 2007, Yvonne was one of the stars in the City Center rival of "Follies" in New York. Yvonne's memorable one woman show, "Yvonne Constant Sings Yves Montand" was standing room only in theatres and concert halls in New York, Chicago, and Washington DC. Yvonne has sung in cabarets, hotels, and supper clubs in Europe and many American Cities to consistently outstanding reviews. In recent years Yvonne has performed in several cabaret venues in the New York Metropolitan area including The Reprise Room, Danny's Skylight Room, The National Arts Club and the critically acclaimed Metropolitan Room where she appears regularly always with constantly updated shows. Her music director since 2006 has been the multi faceted Russ Kassoff. Yvonne was named Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government, and she maintains residences in both New York and Paris. There is a $22.50 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
NYC: JAZZ LEGEND ANNIE ROSS TUESDAYS THE METROPOLITAN ROOM
Jazz legend Annie Ross continues her unprecedented, record-breaking, multi-year run at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440), every Tuesday night at 9:30 pm. Ms. Ross has been an abundant contributor to the art of jazz for over 50 years. Born in the UK, she has been a permanent resident of the USA for many years and a US citizen since 2001. Annie Ross is one of the pioneers of vocalese and the composer of "Twisted", one of the most well known examples of that art, as well as "Farmers Market", "Jackie" and many others. A founding member of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, considered the greatest jazz vocal ensemble of all time, her influence is present in all subsequent practitioners of vocalese. "Twisted" has been recorded by a host of vocalists, including some not normally associated with jazz, including Joni Mitchell and Bette Midler. There is a $25 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
NYC: MAUREEN MCGOVERN: CELEBRATING WOMEN SINGER/ SONGWRITERS
Maureen McGovern celebrates women singer/ songwriters in her powerful new show "Sing, My Sisters, Sing!" at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM(34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Tuesday, March 10th and Thursday, Friday & Saturday, March 12th, 13th & 14th at 7:00 pm. This is also the title of a forthcoming CD. Sing, My Sisters, Sing! includes works by iconic women singer/songwriters who changed the texture of American Popular Music with their deeply personal and timeless songs including works: Annie Lennox, Janis Ian, Carole King, Phoebe Snow, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, Laura Nyro, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Amanda McBroom, and Melissa Manchester, among others. Maureen also pays tribute to her "early singing sisters:" Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Annie Ross, who paved the way by writing their own signature songs. The performance includes: "Heart Like A Wheel," "Natural Woman," "I Feel The Earth Move," "Poetry Man," "Help Me," "At Seventeen," "Come In From The Rain," "A Tisket, A Tasket," "God Bless The Child," and more! Columbia University Songbook, dedicated to showcasing material created by past and present musical theatre luminaries, who have been affiliated with Columbia University throughout the years, will be presented at 54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551) on Tuesday, March 10th at 9:30 pm. Featured in this concert are classic works by songwriting partners Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein/ Lorenz Hart and John Kander and Fred Ebb, as well as contemporary works by songwriting partners Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey; Kait Kerrigan and Brian Lowdermilk; Benjamin Velez and Katie Hathaway; playwright and librettist David Henry Hwang; composer/lyricists Peter Lerman and Rick Hip-Flores, as well as Columbia University's oldest performing arts tradition, The Varsity Show. The evening will include selected material from well-known and beloved shows to material that has only been heard within the campus gates! Columbia University Songbook is produced by Danielle Gautier and directed by Laura Pietropinto, with Musical Direction by Rick Hip-Flores and Associate Musical Direction by Solomon Hoffman. The concert's mission is to create a community of artists from Columbia University, by bringing together a cast of alumni actors who are working professionally as well as current undergraduate and MFA actors on the stage at 54 Below. In 1976 Vince Giordano & the Nighthawks (originally known as the New Orleans Nighthawks) was formed. A big-band historian and collector, Giordano has more than 60,000 scores in his collection.
