D.C.: ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: ALAN JAY PALMER TRIO

Alan Jay Palmer will be Artist in Residence at BOHEMIAN CAVERNS (2001 Eleventh Street N.W., Washington, DC - 202-299-0800), performing every Tuesday in January with shows at 7:00 & 8:30 pm. Palmer was born in Washington D.C. and attended the Duke Ellington School of the Arts. Alan was exposed to Jazz piano through his first teacher John Malachi and listening to Thelonious Monk , Mingus, and John Coltrane recordings that a neighborhood friend had. At that time, Alan was beginning to play around D.C. with different Go Go bands and developing his Jazz chops at Lettumplay with Fred Foss, Webster Young and other D.C. Jazz Legends. After high school, Alan attended the famous African American Music Department at The University of Hartford now known as The Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz. While at the conservatory, Alan studied piano and orchestration from Jaki Byard and Hotep Galeta, and began his close mentorship with the master alto saxophonist/educator, Jackie McLean. Alan became Jackie's close disciple and assistant in Music History and Jazz Education. He was the first student ever entrusted to teach Jackie McLean's famous course "The Origin of Man and Music." During his senior year at Hartt Alan joined The Jackie McLean Quintet and toured Europe and Japan with the band. He also recorded his debut album with Jackie McLean on "Rhythm of the Earth" contributing four original compositions. A true dedicated musician, Currently Alan has now emerged as the leader of the BAP TRIO and THE NEW SOIL big bang and as a new composer in NYC. A talented actor, Alan recently performed in the Living Theatre's revival of Jack Gelber's play The Conection, also contributing new music. Alan has taught music to thousands of students and continues to conduct workshops and master-classes throughout the world. There is a $10 cover.

D.C.: CASHANDRA J AT BLUES ALLEY

Jazz/soul vocalist Cashandra J will perform at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Tuesday, January 28th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. A singer's singer, CaSh Jane exudes her love of music in every note that she sings. Born and raised in rural Texas, she had every opportunity to be immersed in and around music. CaSh Jane picked up her first instrument at the age of 7. Her mother and father purchased an upright piano and started her on lessons. It was only a few years later that she was also taking lessons for violin and clarinet and playing in school ensembles. Call for cover/minimum information.

FLORIDA: MARILYN MAYE AT THE ROYAL ROOM

The legendary Marilyn Maye is returning to THE ROYAL ROOM at THE COLONY HOTEL (155 Hammond Avenue, Palm Beach, FL - 561-659-8100) for her seventh annual engagement. Performances are Tuesday through Saturday, January 28th through February 1st at 8:30 pm. She is the holder of the singer's record (76 appearances) on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Her career is a litany of honors, awards, and landmark achievements. Her hit songs include "Step to the Rear," "The Lamp is Low," "Sherry" and "If My Friends Could See Me Now." Known as a "Singer's Singer," she has performed at New York's Copa Cobana, The Living Room, Michael's Pub, The Rainbow Grill, St. Regis, The Metropolitan Room, Birdland and appears frequently at 54 Below. $120 for prix fixe dinner & show; $55 for show only.

SAN FRANCISCO: CHRISTIAN PEPIN - A TOUR OF LATIN AMERICA

Puerto Rican born GRAMMY-nominated Latin Jazz percussionist Christian Pepin will perform his show 'A Tour Of Latin America' at YOSHI'S (1330 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-655-5600 - o ) on Tuesday, January 28th at 8:00 pm. He is joined by Carlos Caro (Percussion), Alex Conde (Piano) and David Pinto (Bass). Flamenco Vocalist Kina Mendez will make a special appearance. There is a $14 cover. Dinner/show: $50.
