BOSTON: THE BRUCE GERTZ QUINTET

The Bruce Gertz Quintet with Jerry Bergonzi, tenor sax; Phil Grenadier, trumpet; Gabriel Guerrero, piano; and Austin McMahon, drums, performs atTHE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Wednesday, January 29th at 7:30 pm. In jazz, as in many things, how one achieves a high profile is determined as much by geography and luck of the draw as by anything else. Consider the bass player Bruce Gertz. Although he's known throughout the U.S. and has some following worldwide, his name doesn't show up in the polls, he's not a featured performer at festivals and he's not signed to a major label. Still, it's apparent from the first track of Open Mind that Gertz belongs in the front rank of contemporary bassists, unquestionably the equal of more celebrated NYC counterparts. He's got solid but flexible time, a deep, warm tone and a sophisticated harmonic foundation. He's capable of pushing a group, but he's also a good team player. For Open Mind, he has assembled a heavy-duty crew of peers, players whose language is largely based around the best of 1960s modal mainstream (think Blue Note Records generally, and maybe Wayne Shorter specifically), but with ears for where jazz has come since then. There is a $20 cover.

Welcome to an evening of the cool, hip world of the Bossa Nova. In the 1950's and 60's a magical musical transformation took place in Brazil and made its way to the USA in large part due to the energy of American Jazz musicians like guitarist Charlie Byrd and Saxophonist Stan Getz. This special evening will take you back to those fabulous songs from composers like Antonio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfa and move through ways in which it inspired subsequent generations of jazz musicians. Peter Fields is a classically trained guitarist, who like Charlie Byrd, uses the classical guitar as his vehicle for interpreting a wide range of music from the Jazz standards, through Bossa Nova to popular music.
