'Monday Nights, New Voices' series looking for submissions



Following a year hiatus, Scott Alan has announced the return of the acclaimed 'Monday Nights, New Voices' series to New York City. Scott started the series in 2005 to celebrate new talent struggling to be heard. Each month, he will produce the series that features five new voices gracing the stage of THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 212-255-5438) and singing the work of established or emerging composers. The guest songwriter(s) join the New Voices each month and accompany them on music from their songbook. The first concert will be on Monday, May 20th at 7:00 pm. Following that date, each concert will fall on the last Monday of each month. Paul Staroba will return as the resident musical director of the series. "New York's Next Top Drag Queen Contest." at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM



THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) hosts its first "New York's Next Top Drag Queen Contest." The six-week affair, running five Mondays from April 1st to May 6th (no show on April 8th), will pit eight pre-selected drag queen artists who will be judged not by looks alone but by how well they sing and entertain. Hosted by Hedda Lettuce, the highly competitive contest will feature a parade of treats for the eyes, special guests, surprise guest judges and a mystery judge whose identity will hopefully be revealed at the contest's finale. Competing will be these promising entertainers, all of whom have been rigorously pre-screened: Goldie Fische (a.k.a. Gerry Mastrolia); Titania Steele (a.k.a. Danny Marr); Bootsie Lafaris (a.k.a. Mr. Costanzo has assembled a quartet of New York's finest musicians, including Pianist/arranger Tedd Firth, Guitarist Joe Cohn, Bassist Neal Miner and Drummer Johathan Mele, to accompany him on this latest project. These fine musicians have lent their exceptional musical talents on Mr. Costanzo's previously successful releases, "Destination Moon" and "Can't We Be Friends?", creating a marvelous collaboration that continues to delight Mr. Costanzo's audiences. The Broadway at Birdland concert series is pleased to announce the return of Broadway actress and cabaret star Karen Mason, who will be performing a brand new show, "Secrets of the Ancient Divas" on Monday, April 1st at 7:00 pm atBIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080). "Secrets of the Ancient Divas" is a whimsically titled look at a subject Mason holds near and dear to her heart: the iconic singers who have influenced her. In this concert, she will take on the songs of Judy Garland, Peggy Lee, Shirley Bassey and Barbra Streisand. Songs will include "The Trolley Song," "The Way We Were," "The Man That Got Away," and "Goldfinger." The musical director for the evening will be Christopher Denny, with direction by Barry Kleinbort. Karen Mason recently starred on Broadway as The Queen of Hearts in Frank Wildhorn's Wonderland, and as Velma Von Tussle in the Tony Award-winning Broadway smash hit Hairspray. Mason originated the role of Tanya in Mamma Mia!, for which she was awarded a 2002 Drama Desk nomination as Best Actress. Karen also starred as Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard, a role that she played over 200 times to critical praise and standing ovations on Broadway and in Los Angeles. Jeff Macauley brings back his acclaimed show "It Was Me - The Lyrics of Norman Gimbel" toDON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788) for one more performance, on Saturday, March 30th at 7:30 pm. He will be joined by the superbly talented Tex Arnold, who also wrote the arrangements and the wonderful Jon Burr on bass. "It Was Me - The Lyrics of Norman Gimbel" has been performed in both Los Angeles and New York since August, 2012. In his previous shows, Jeff Macauley explored the rich world of early musical films in "Hollywood Party - Movie Songs 1928-1934," and paid tribute to the most popular female singer of the 40's and a beloved Hollywood icon in "MWAH! The Dinah Shore Show," for which he received Backstage magazine's Bistro Award. After examining the popular songs of the '20s through the '40s, Jeff is now taking a look at the popular music of the '50s, '60s and '70s through the extensive catalog of Norman Gimbel. Norman Gimbel won an Oscar for "It Goes Like It Goes" from Norma Rae and is responsible for some of the most recognizable and best-loved lyrics of the last half-century. In a career that goes back to the early '50s, Mr. Gimbel, working with such composers as Charles Fox, Michel Legrand, David Shire and Antonio Carlos Jobim, gave words to such standards as Meditation, Sway, So Nice, The Girl From Ipanema, I Will Wait For You, Watch What Happens, I Will Follow Him, Killing Me Softly With His Song, Bluesette, and Canadian Sunset, as well as the themes to Wonder Woman, Laverne & Shirley and Happy Days. In Eva Kantor's solo debut in cabaret, and also in Eva's professional life, she is finding many people accepting of her great talent. It is not a cliche to say that she is an artist on her way up. In addition to placing in the MetroStar finals, Eva has recently played at the Players Club for KT Sullivan and the Mabel Mercer Foundation to great acclaim. Out of that, she was asked to sing at Rose Hall in October at the Mercer Cabaret Convention. Eva began acting at an early age and quickly excelled. She has played roles such as Eva Peron in Evita, Penny in Hairspray at the Weston Playhouse alongside Broadway veterans Marissa Perry and Jay A. Johnson, and the title role in the national tour of Nancy Ford and Gretchen Cryer's Anne of Green Gables. She is a recipient of the first ever fully funded scholarship at the Singer's Forum/Actor's Equity scholarship program, where she is currently studying with Eric Michael Gillett. Marissa Mulder presents "Tom ... in His Words" - the music of Tom Waits - at the THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) in four performances, Wednesday through Saturday, March 27th through 30th at 7:00 pm. Mulder, who, since her 2011 MetroStar Talent Challenge win, has emerged as one of the most promising singers in New York, collaborates for the first time with music director Jon Weber, and with Lauren Fox who serves as director. Weber, on piano, leads a trio that includes Ritt Henn on bass and Mike Rosengarten on guitar. In "Tom ... in His Words" Mulder takes Waits at his word, exploring some of his iconic songs ("Downtown Train" and "Ol' 55"), as well as lesser-known treasures like "Broken Bicycles" and "Alice." The 2011 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee has always operated on the fringes, blending strains of jazz and the blues, even vaudeville, into his rock ballads and scores. Mulder, who made her cabaret debut in 2010 at Don't Tell Mama, followed that with her critically acclaimed tribute to songwriter Jimmy Van Heusen in 2011. Grammy Award-winning multi-platinum selling vocalist Debby Boone will make her debut at the legendary THE CAFE CARLYLE (35 East 76th Street, NYC - 212-744-1600) on Thuesdays through Saturdays, March 19th through 30th at 8:45 pm (no performance on Friday, March 29th) with her new show "Swing This," featuring a nine piece band. Based on her upcoming CD, "Swing This" is her take on Las Vegas in the 60s with stories and memories to share from the years her father Pat Boone was headlining at the Sands and Sahara hotels. "Swing This" is a true reflection of the music, glamour and pure exhilaration of that golden age in Vegas that inspired her to be a performer in the first place. Jazz legend Annie Ross continues her unprecedented, record-breaking, multi-year run at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440), Tuesday nights March 5th. 12th, 19th & 26th at 9:30 pm.at 9:30 pm. Ms. Ross has been an abundant contributor to the art of jazz for over 50 years. Born in the UK, she has been a permanent resident of the USA for many years and a US citizen since 2001. Annie Ross is one of the pioneers of vocalese and the composer of "Twisted", one of the most well known examples of that art, as well as "Farmers Market", "Jackie" and many others. A founding member of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, considered the greatest jazz vocal ensemble of all time, her influence is present in all subsequent practitioners of vocalese. "Twisted" has been recorded by a host of vocalists, including some not normally associated with jazz, including Joni Mitchell and Bette Midler. There is a $25 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

There are two shows nightly, a dinner show at 8:00 and a supper show at 10:00 pm. Chris Barrett's performances are in the tradition of the great late-night boites of a fondly remembered era, when the likes of Hugh Shannon, Bobby Short, and Buddy Barnes manned the keyboard. The multi-award-winning, multi-talented vocalist, bandleader, and comedian Terese Genecco is currently the longest-running nightclub act on Broadway, appearing as a headliner at The Iridium NYC every month - for more than 72 performances - since her opening night in March of 2009. Genecco has appeared in major music venues, performing arts centers and jazz festivals around the world since her cabaret debut in 2003 when she became San Francisco's "Entertainer of the Year." URGENT: WBAI NEEDS YOUR HELP TO RAISE $200,000 BY MARCH 31st

ANOTHER IMPORTANT REMINDER: We received an urgent message last week from David Kenney regarding WBAI - which carries his EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN show on Sunday evenings. (see listing above). The station is in emergency mode, needing to raise at least $200,000 by the end of March or else risk losing their lease on the antenna at the top of Empire State forever. Your contribution will go specifically to the fund set up for listeners to help prevent WBAI radio from complete shutdown. CELEBRATING MARCH IS CABARET MONTH

The Chuck Anderson Trio will perform at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Monday, March 25th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Chuck Anderson's professional career began at the age of 21, when he joined the Latin Casino, where he played with legendary performers such as Bobby Darin, Michel LeGrand, Nancy Wilson, Peggy Lee, and Billy Eckstein. Three years later, Mr. Anderson formed the Chuck Anderson Trio. Together they recorded Mirror Within a Mirror, his first Jazz album. Mr. Anderson has been endorsed by Gibson Guitar and Marin Guitar, and is a member of the Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts' International Advisory Board (Paul McCartney's school in Liverpool). Chuck Anderson is equally accomplished as an educator. Before he founded his own private music school, he worked for eight years as director of the Medley Music school. Known for his intimate style, Almond is joined by five musicians and special guests Laura Benanti, Veanne Cox, and Lindsay Mendez. Songwriter Todd Almond has recently been writing music for and creating theater with some of New York's most beloved theater artists: Sarah Ruhl (Melancholy Play), Sherie Rene Scott (Piece of Meat at 54 Below), Josh Schmidt (untitled), and Jenny Schwartz (Iowa) to name but a few. The new weekly late-night event will be hosted by Christine Pedi (Sirius XM Radio host, Forbidden Broadway, Talk Radio.) Preliminary shows are selected Mondays through May 27th.
