CHI: JIM CARUSO's CAST PARTY RETURNS TO CHICAGO

The popular open mic and Manhattan mainstay Jim Caruso's Cast Party debuts atMAYNE STAGE (1328 West Morse Avenue, Chicago, IL - 773-381-4554) on Wednesday, August 3rd at 9:30 pm. Host Jim Caruso and pianist/musical director Billy Stritch have been taking their extreme open mic on the road this past year, and are thrilled to be able to celebrate the extraordinary local talent in the Windy City. Cast Party is a mix of music, impromptu performance and cocktail party revelry, where showbiz superstars, stunning jazz talents and cabaret glitterati hit the stage alongside up-and-comers to serve up jaw-dropping music and general razzle-dazzle. It's the ultimate spot to mix and mingle with talented show folk and their fans. This past year, Caruso and Stritch have taken the Party to Austin, Pittsburgh, and Provincetown, as well as their bi-monthly residence at The Magic Castle in Hollywood. Host Caruso guides the entire affair like a bubbly cruise director, musical director Billy Stritch holds court at the ivories and the audience is invited to participate in the festivities. Jazz legend Annie Ross continues her unprecedented, record-breaking, multi-year run at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440), every Tuesday night in August at 9:30 pm. Ms. Ross has been an abundant contributor to the art of jazz for over 50 years. Born in the UK, she has been a permanent resident of the USA for many years and a US citizen since 2001. Annie Ross is one of the pioneers of vocalese and the composer of "Twisted", one of the most well known examples of that art, as well as "Farmers Market", "Jackie" and many others. A founding member of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, considered the greatest jazz vocal ensemble of all time, her influence is present in all subsequent practitioners of vocalese. "Twisted" has been recorded by a host of vocalists, including some not normally associated with jazz, including Joni Mitchell and Bette Midler. There is a $25 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

Dominic Mattos' Merman on Broadway is in part a meticulous recreation of Ethel Merman's Las Vegas Club Act, including Merman's famous 'medley'. Dominic, a male soprano also at home with Purcell and Handel, sings all of Merman's hits (Everything's Coming Up Roses, There's No Business Like Showbusiness, They Say That Falling in Love is Wonderful) in her trademark belting style as well as covering Merman's lesser-known material (such as 'World Take Me Back' - from Merman's run in Hello, Dolly!). Dominic aims for 'Mermanesque' rather than a direct imitation of Merman - to evoke Merman's spirit, her wicked sense of humor and no-nonsense approach, and to present her unforgettable music with the same care for the lyrics being heard that Merman had herself. One of the world's most respected jazz vocalists, Mark Murphy will be performing for one night only Sunday, July 24th at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) with shows at 9:00 & 11:00 pm. Murphy's prolific career spans 40 years and is most noted for his definitive and unique vocalese and vocal improvisations with both melody and lyrics. He is the recipient of the 1996, 1997, 2000, and 2001 Downbeat Magazine Readers Jazz Poll for Best Male Vocalist of the Year, as well as six Grammy Award Nominations for Best Vocal Jazz Performance. He is also known for his original lyrics to the jazz classics Stolen Moments and Red Clay. At 74 years old, Mark Murphy has not slowed down, as he continues to tour internationally, appearing at festivals, concerts, in the best jazz clubs and on television programs throughout the U.S., Europe, Australia and Japan. Christine Andreas returns to BOB EGAN'S NEW HOPE - SUPPER CLUB AND CABARET(6426 Lower York Road, Route 202, New Hope, PA - 215-862-5225 ) on Saturday, July 23rd at 8:30 pm, direct from Broadway where she played the role of Jacqueline in the Olivier award winning production of "LA CAGE AUX FOLLES" starring Kelsey Grammar & Douglas Hodge. She received nation-wide raves starring as Margaret Johnson in the 55 week national tour of the multiple Tony Award winning musical, "THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA." Best known for her work on the Broadway stage, Ms. Andreas burst onto the New York theatre scene starring a Eliza Doolittle in the 20th Anniversary production of "MY FAIR LADY", garnering the Theatre World Award. Ms. Andreas received two Tony nominations as Laurey in "OKLAHOMA!" at the Palace Theatre and as Frankie Frayne in "ON YOUR TOES" directed by the legendary George Abbott. She created the role of Marguerite St. Just on Broadway in "THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL." There is a $40 cover plus a $15 food/drink minimum.
