CABARET CONFERENCE AT YALE ANNOUNCES 2010 DATES
Erv Raible, Executive Director/Artistic Director, takes great pride in announcing the Eighth Annual CABARET CONFERENCE AT YALE UNIVERSITY. The Cabaret Conference at Yale University is being developed in conjunction with the Yale School of Drama/Yale Repertory Theater (for information call the Cabaret Conference Hotline at 212-629-2000, please do not call YSD/YRT); and several conference sessions will be held in the facilities of the Yale School of Drama/Yale Repertory Theater, including the recently opened New Theater. The Eighth Annual Cabaret Conference At Yale University will be held July 23rd through August 1st, 2010, and is an internationally focused, nine-day teaching program that offers an intensive look at the art of cabaret performance technique, and trains professionals for the live entertainment industry in the 21st century. The Great American Songbook will be addressed and promoted in its entirety, from its origins in the late 19th century through the classic pop standards of the 1930s and 40s to today's contemporary cabaret, musical theater, jazz and pop music. CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE NEWSLETTER LIMITED TO ONCE A WEEK FOR NEXT 2 WEEKS
With the Christmas & New Year's Holidays both falling on Friday, there will be just one issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for the weeks of December 20th & 27th. The Monday issues on the 21st & 28th will be "double issues" covering all the news we can fit, plus all the shows that are giving discounts to members and the events and items running ads on the website. There will be NO MEMBERS' ONLY issues on Christmas day, Friday, December 25th. Please keep this information in mind when submitting news items.
FINAL CALL FOR CABARET FOR SENIORS
A few months ago we began offering a new service for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members over 65. The program includes a special newsletter, every other week, listing special cabaret offers, special news and tips and tricks for seniors. Also included was an extra year extension on their membership - current 2009-2010 members who joined would receive a 2010-2011 membership free. However, to make the program worthwhile, we needed at least 50 members to join, but to date less than 35 members have chosen to take advantage of the program. So, unless we reach that goal by December 31, 2009, the program will be discontinued. Those already in the program will have their membership extended as promised even if the rest of the program is discontinued. Check out the home page at CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for a link to details on how to become a member of CABARET FOR SENIORS. Note: membership in CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is required for this special service. If the goal is not reached, on December 26th the special section will be removed from the website, and the final CABARET FOR SENIORS newsletter will be sent on that date as well.

I am sure you have noticed my frequent mentions of THE BUTTERFLY CLUB in Melbourne, AUS in the newsletters. Well, first off, they are the only Australian cabaret room to send me detailed monthly schedules. But secondly, nearly all of the shows presented there are so eclectic and original, I just enjoy adding them to the newsletter each issue. To quote from their mailings: "While we welcome all forms of cabaret, we favor those that reflect the style of performance for which cabaret was originally created - shows that satirize or reflect contemporary life and enlighten audiences, presented in an intimate environment." A far cry from the "cookie-cutter" shows we so often see here in NYC!

MEMORIAL SERVICE SATURDAY FOR EARL WENTZ
A memorial service for Earl Wentz, creator of the American Composer Series, will be held in New York on Saturday, December 19th at 2:00 pm at JOHN STREET UNITED METHODIST CHURCH (44 John Street, NYC). The composer, performer, arranger, and noted teacher of vocal performance and technique passed away at his home in Charlotte, NC on Sunday, November 15, 2009, following an extended illness. Wentz had been the organist and choirmaster at John Street Methodist Church in New York since 1993. The Rev. Jason Radmacher of John St. Church will preside. The one-hour recording of Wentz’s 1989 Requiem, featuring full orchestra, 30-voice choir, and four prominent New York soloists will be played at the funeral service, which is open to the public.
In New York, Wentz created the American Composer Series, an ongoing performance series in the cabaret format, paying tribute to the greatest composers of popular American music on the American scene, particularly those composers associated with Tin Pan Alley and the American Songbook. From 2000 to 2009, the series presented 15 original musical revues, many returning for multiple performances over several seasons (see http://www.americomps.com/ ).

I am not a member of FaceBook, but someone forwarded to me the following note which was posted on FB about long-time friend and charter member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, Gregory Kennell (who happened to design our HOTLINE logo):
"Greg is currently very ill with viral meningitis. He is currently in isolation in an ICU and is receiving the best medical care possible. His family is with him and his affairs are being cared for by his work and family. His family asks that you please DO NOT attempt to visit him, the hospital will allow only direct family near him...."
Thoughts and prayers go out on Greg's behalf - and to his family and friends. My understanding is that this is a very serious situations and I will try to keep you informed via TWITTER and this BLOG.

The 2010 MAC Award (MAC: Manhattan Association of Cabarets) rules and applications are now available at www.MACNYC.com where you can download and print them. It is essential that you read all the rules carefully and that all required documentation be included with your application because incomplete submissions will be disqualified. The Eligibility Committee does not have time to track down missing information. It is your responsibility to provide all required information. Please read all rules and application forms carefully. The deadline for all eligibility applications is January 16, 2010 - so make sure you mail your applications a few days ahead of time. Applications received after that date will not be accepted.

"Damaged Care" The Comedy Musical About Health Care in America will be presented at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788) on Friday, December 11th at 7:00 pm; and Saturday, December 12th at 3:30 pm. Written and performed by Dr. Greg LaGana & Dr. Barry Levy, the show is directed by Michael Schiralli with musical direction by Brad Ross. Damaged Care has been performed Off-Off Broadway and at many other venues across the country for the past 14 years. The show highlights issues of great concern to patients and health professionals, including erosion of the doctor-patient relationship, depersonalization of services, the inadequate emphasis on prevention, and the success of "superbugs." 2009 Bistro Award winner Susan Winter returns to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - ) with her all new show, Susan Sings Van Heusen with four performances in December: Sundays, December 13th & 20th and Tuesdays, December 15th & 22nd, all shows at 7:00 pm. Jimmy Van Heusen was one of the most accomplished songwriters in history, winning four "Oscars" and one Emmy award among his many credits. But the favorite composer of Frank and Bing was not just about ring-a-ding-ding! Susan puts her own special stamp on a wide array of material that Van Heusen has written for stage and screen, television and recordings. She'll be joined on stage by the incomparable Tedd Firth at the piano, Tom Hubbard on bass and Tony Jefferson on drums. Multi-award-winning Lina Koutrakos is the director. These will be the final two performances of their semi-annual Christmas extravaganza, before they put the show to bed for good. The boys will be joined by special guest Karen Mack to celebrate the Holiday season and sing some traditional,and some not so traditional favorites, plus a new holiday favorite written by Karen Benedetto. At the CDs FOR THE HOLIDAYS PARTY on Monday, November 30th at DON'T TELL MAMA, the winners of the BEST CABARET CD OF 2009 were announced. Three CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members served as judges this year: A performer (Sue Matsuki), a Cabaret Maven (Joe Regan, Jr.) and a reviewer (John Hoglund). CDs were judged for 3 main qualities, with weighted points awarded in each area: VOCALS/INSTRUMENTALS, PRODUCTION/TECHNICAL QUALITY and PACKAGING/PRESENTATION.
Baby Jane Dexter's CD "IF", recorded live at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM, came off with the top honors. There was a 3-way tie for second place, with the honors going to John Treacy Egan for "On Christmas Morning"; Jenna Esposito for "To Connie ... Love, Jenna"; and Greg Purnhagen's "Desiderio". The winning CDs, plus all 20 entries for this year's contest, can be seen on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE WEBSITE - and each CD cover is linked to a website where the CD may be purchased for Holiday Giving.
