This year, the 23rd Cabaret Convention will be held Wednesday through Friday, October 17th through 19th at FREDERICK P. ROSE HALL (Columbus Circle, Broadway at 60th Street, NYC). The annual New York City Cabaret Convention, conceived, launched, and brilliantly sustained for the past 23 seasons by The Mabel Mercer Foundation, has honored many specific people and events across the past two decades. Legendary performers, composers, lyricists, and their anniversaries have all had their day and their due as the Convention grew in visibility, stature, and acclaim. But the performances for 2012 are scheduled to convey a level of joy, song, and laughter that quite possibly will top everything that's gone before as they celebrate the man who worked with The Foundation's namesake, created the organization in her memory, and produced countless events to showcase the Great Popular Songbook and those, whether veteran star or hopeful newcomer, who perform it. Donald F. Smith, the Foundation's Executive Director, died in March, but to say his legacy seems gloriously intact is a colossal understatement for the age.
