Voices of Chicago is a concert event paying tribute to the great musical styles that make Chicago the City of the Century. Loni Ackerman brings her new cabaret show "Next to Ab-Normal" to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Fridays, February 24th and March 2nd, 23rd & 30th, all shows at 7:00 pm. In the show, Broadway veteran Loni Ackerman recalls personal stories of her unusual New York upbringing (including her childhood associations with such "family friends" as Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon,) as well as revisiting songs she sang in New York hits like "Starting Here, Starting Now" or in one of her lengthy associations with the shows of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Directed by Barry Kleinbort, with musical direction by Paul Greenwood, Ms. Ackerman's repertoire also includes standards, contemporary songs, even one of her own compositions which became the theme song for a "very special" French film made during her time in Paris. Pianist/singer/ songwriter Gary Negbaur has toured across the USA, Europe and Australia wowing audiences with his heartfelt and often humorous originals along with his innovative arrangements of standards. His recordings include a CD of original music (Let Me Explain) as well as a critically acclaimed solo album of standards (Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat) and a children's CD (Max's Family Band). In addition to performing, Gary writes music for theater and film, and many of his songs are performed and recorded by other singers. Composer/ singer/ songwriter Michael Omer will be making his New York cabaret debut atTHE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 ) on Sundays, February 26th and March 4th, both shows at 7:00 pm. Michael Omer is a former regular at London's legendary Pizza on the Park and currently at The Pheasantry in Chelsea. A brilliant pianist, he evokes many musical moods: his original "Making (Royal) Whoopee" (new lyrics about the Royal Wedding); the noir-ish, moody "The Not American Beauty"; to jaunty musical monologues "I Don't Remember Names", his lament at a party. Other song titles include "Mr McGee," a specialty number about a topic familiar to many New Yorkers; "Sexy Samba (Decaffinato)" and Dave Frishberg's jazzy "Blizzard of Lies". Michael's musical career includes scoring Oscar-nominated drama, for the film "It's Good To Talk", along with producing for the charts and composing for the concert hall. Michael has scored the BBC TV costume dramas The Prince and The Pauper and Little Lord Fauntleroy, both with scripts by Julian Fellowes (of Downtown Abbey and Gosford Park fame). Jackie Draper is one of the most amazing performers in cabaret! The evening will include selections from their Broadway musicals Ragtime, My Favorite Year, Once on This Island, Lucky Stiff, Seussical and more. Gillett and Hall will bring their unique stamp to a wildly diverse catalogue of music by two of the theater's most popular contemporary songwriters. Eric Michael Gillett is a MAC and Bistro Award winning vocalist whose shows have included "Cast of Thousands – The Songs of Craig Carnelia," "It Takes Two – The Duets of Stephen Sondheim" (with Melanie Vaughan), and his critically lauded collection of radio songs of the past forty years, "Hook, Line & Singer." In recent months he has found a new home at Feinstein's at Loews Regency where he debuted both "Widescreen: Songs From and About the Movies," and his first tribute to a composer from the Great American Songbook, "Hooray for Love – Gillett Sings Arlen." La Tanya Hall has traveled the world and has worked with some of the world's most celebrated artists, including Diana Ross, Bobby McFerrin, Harry Belafonte, Aretha Franklin, Michael Feinstein, Patti Labelle, and Steve Tyrell. She is also an in-demand session singer and an accomplished actress, having lent her skills to numerous recording projects, Broadway shows and television and movie appearances. NYC: LONI ACKERMAN IS "NEXT TO AB-NORMAL" AT THE MET
Loni Ackerman brings her new cabaret show "Next to Ab-Normal" to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Fridays, February 24th and March 2nd, 23rd & 30th, all shows at 7:00 pm. In the show, Broadway veteran Loni Ackerman recalls personal stories of her unusual New York upbringing (including her childhood associations with such "family friends" as Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon,) as well as revisiting songs she sang in New York hits like "Starting Here, Starting Now" or in one of her lengthy associations with the shows of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Directed by Barry Kleinbort, with musical direction by Paul Greenwood, Ms. Ackerman's repertoire also includes standards, contemporary songs, even one of her own compositions which became the theme song for a "very special" French film made during her time in Paris. There is a $20 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
