NYC: JON WEBER: JOPLIN TO JARRETT

Jon Weber returns with his acclaimed show 'Joplin to Jarrett' to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Tuesday, January 6th at 7:00 pm. Joplin to Jarrett serves as a concise history of jazz piano with an emphasis on the earlier composers from the first half of the 20th Century. Over 100 years of music interspersed with musical excerpts with John Weber's insights and anecdotes reveal a lifetime's worth of impassioned research. Weber's extraordinary facility for recall and analysis allow him to form fascinating and unexpected connections between artists of different eras, their development and influences in jazz piano. Jazz pianist Jon Weber has recorded and toured all over the world, winning numerous honors for performance and composition - scoring extensively for television since 1987. Jon lives in New York City and hosts NPR's Piano Jazz with Jon Weber after frequently serving as guest host for Marian McPartland. There is a $20 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

NYC: JAZZ LEGEND ANNIE ROSS TUESDAYS THE METROPOLITAN ROOM

Jazz legend Annie Ross continues her unprecedented, record-breaking, multi-year run at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440), every Tuesday night at 9:30 pm. Ms. Ross has been an abundant contributor to the art of jazz for over 50 years. Born in the UK, she has been a permanent resident of the USA for many years and a US citizen since 2001. Annie Ross is one of the pioneers of vocalese and the composer of "Twisted", one of the most well known examples of that art, as well as "Farmers Market", "Jackie" and many others. A founding member of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, considered the greatest jazz vocal ensemble of all time, her influence is present in all subsequent practitioners of vocalese. "Twisted" has been recorded by a host of vocalists, including some not normally associated with jazz, including Joni Mitchell and Bette Midler. There is a $25 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

NYC: FUTUREFEST SHOWCASE AT 54 BELOW

The popular Los Angeles showcase FUTUREFEST is coming to New York City and 54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551) on Tuesday, January 6th at 7:00 pm. Presented by the Festival of New American Musicals and Open Hydrant Theater Company, the showcase spotlights rising local young talent in a celebration of the next generation of musical theatre artists. At FutureFest, high-school and college students sing songs from new musicals written by leading and rising lyricists/composers. Songs by Stephen Schwartz, Scott Alan, Ryan Scott Oliver, Jeff Thomson, Jordan Mann, Ben Toth, Chad Beguelin, Michelle Elliott, Daniel Larsen, Michael Kooman, Christopher Dimond have been showcased at this event, hosted by special celebrity guests. At nineteen, Amy Spanger announced to her parents that she was moving to New York because "these legs won'5t last forever." At twenty-one she did. With a two thousand dollar loan, a shared one-bedroom in Harlem, and a job waiting tables, she made a promise to herself: "I will make it on Broadway within the next three years." In collaboration with her partner, musical whiz-kid Kris Kukul, Amy is proud to present an evening of pop, music theater, rock, country, and candid storytelling. The show will feature some of the music that put her on the map, including "Don't Stop Believing" from Rock of Ages, "Always True To You Darling In My Fashion" from Kiss Me Kate, and "Come To Your Senses" from tick, tick ... BOOM! She'll also share some glamorous and not-as-glamorous tales as she reflects on the places she's lived and people she's lived with along the great white way, including a budding schizophrenic, a pair of cocaine enthusiasts, and a couple of husbands. Ever since her break out performance as Lois/Bianca in Broadway's Tony Award-winning Kiss Me Kate, Amy has been cheered by audiences and critics alike for her star turns in shows liketick, tick ... BOOM!, The Wedding Singer, Urinetown, Elf, Rock of Ages, and Chicago. She's guest starred on Royal Pains, Ed, Law and Order: SVU, Six Feet Under, and Bored To Death. NYC: ALYSHA UMPHRESS SWINGS JEFF BLUMENKRANTZ: "I'VE BEEN PLAYED"

The Broadway at Birdland concert series is proud to announce that Alysha Umphress, currently starring as "Hildy" in the Broadway revival of On The Town, and Tony-nominated songwriter Jeff Blumenkrantz will perform together at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080 - ) in concert on Monday, January 5th at 7:00 pm. The duo will celebrate the release of their new CD, "I've Been Played," which features Jeff's swinging songs and arrangements performed as only Alysha can! The band will include Tedd Firth on piano, Pete Donovan on bass, Ray Marchica on drums, Dan Willis on sax/flute and Peter Sachon on cello. Umphress currently stars on Broadway as "Hildy" in the acclaimed revival of On the Town. Her other Broadway credits include American Idiot, On a Clear Day ... , Priscilla Queen of the Desert, and Bring It On. Most recently, she appeared as Cee Cee Bloom in the world premiere of Beaches, the musical, at The Signature Theatre. Deborah Davis will host a benefit For The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592 - ) on Monday, January 5th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Davis is a world renound, multi talented, gifted singer and consummate performer. A jazz singer fused with gospel, Texas blues, soul, a natural flowing charm, and flawless stage presence; Deborah draws you into her show. Her distinct style of phrasing, extraordinary singing ability and professionalism earned her a nomination of U.S. Jazz Ambassador by the U.S. State Department in 2004. She has sung for dignitaries at United Nations & international Embassy affairs including a performance for former President Bill Clinton, an invitation to Athens, Greece by the U.S. Embassy to headline a benefit concert for Hurricane Katrina victims, and an invitation by the Jamaican U.S. embassy to headline a Black History Celebration. Known to musicians as a hard swinging singer Deborah has been invitations to perform with legendary jazz greats Ray Brown, Lionel Hampton and Clark Terry, as well as an rare opportunity to substitute for Abbey Lincoln here at the Blue Note. Freddie Hubbard, Art Blakey, and Lou Donaldson have all shared their stage with Deborah inviting her to jam. Not limiting her talents to the jazz audience, Deborah has shared the stage with Bon Jovi, Billy Joel and sung with The Shirells. While sining in the house band at Monte Carlo Summer Festival '08 she opened for Celine Dione, Alicia Keys, Jill Scott, Diana Ross, Santana, Eric Clapton, Alanis Morisette, and more. A native of Dallas Texas, Deborah began singing as soon as she could speak. Her first inspiration towards a jazz career was when her high school choir director, jazz pianist Robert Sanders added her to his weekend gigs. Deborah went on to earn a Bachelor Of Music Education Degree in vocal studies from North Texas University and subsequently an Associate Arts Degree in Recording Engineering at Cedar Valley College. Her musical development brought her to NYC in 1986, where she has carved out a niche for herself on the U.S. East Coast and International jazz scenes. Always striving to be well rounded, Deborah ran a full 26.2 mile fundraising marathon with the LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY TEAM IN TRAINING in Dublin Ireland '98. After doing so she realized singing for the cause was a much better idea. Tonights concert marks the 17th Annual jazz benefit for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society held annually here at the Blue Note, ( the first Monday of each year). When not on stage Deborah enjoys making jewelry, sewing, abstract arts and crafts, poetry, juicing ,vegetarian diet, Bikram yoga, and working out. Her favorite animals are monkeys. NYC: MID-ATLANTIC COLLEGIATE JAZZ ORCHESTRA WITH SEAN JONES AT DIZZYS

Now in its seventh year, the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Jazz Orchestra has established itself as a premier collegiate all-star big band. The group is returning to DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595 - ) on Monday, January 5th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm for its annual January performance, and this year's featured conductor/performer is former Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra trumpeter Sean Jones. All undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for this elite band (upon receiving a nomination from an instructor), and the final lineup is selected by a committee of Cumberland Jazz Society members. This year, the band will perform a variety of selections from the contemporary big band library. This year's MACJO will perform a variety of selections from the contemporary big band library. The group, first assembled in 2009, has previously performed in New York, New Orleans, Washington DC, and Maryland. The MACJO is an initiative of the Cumberland Jazz Society, Inc. There is a $35 cover.

Broadway stars Marla Mindelle (Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella) and Clarke Thorell (Hairspray) and Off-Broadway star Saum Eskandani (Disaster!) are joined by several dozen children and teen performers from Newtown, CT to celebrate the launch of their World Premiere CD of A ROCKIN' Midsummer Night's Dream at 54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551 - ) on Monday, January 5th & Thursday, January 8th at 7:00 pm. This critically acclaimed fresh new take on Shakespeare's classic comedy features a fantastic new rock score by Eric Svejcar with lyrics by William Shakespeare, Eric Svejcar and Michael Unger. A ROCKIN' Midsummer Night's Dream recently completed a critically acclaimed run in Newtown, CT as part of the 12.14 Foundation's summer season. This new musical adaptation was written specifically for the young performers within the Newtown community and is being preserved on a 2 disc set which will be released to coincide with this 54 Below concert. The 12.14 Foundation was created as a means of using the performing arts to help heal, inspire and promote personal development within the Newtown community in the aftermath of the tragedy of December 14th, 2012. One of the most esteemed electric guitarists of his generation, Mike Stern has distinguished himself over a four-decade career that has encompassed musical partnerships with Blood, Sweat & Tears, Billy Cobham, Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius, the Brecker Brothers and Joe Henderson, as well as 16 recordings as a leader (six of which were nominated for GRAMMY Awards). Dennis Chambers has recorded and performed with John Scofield, George Duke, Brecker Brothers, Santana, Parliament/Funkadelic, John McLaughlin, Niacin, Mike Stern, CAB, Greg Howe, and many others. Chambers has become well known among drummers for his technique and speed. TORONTO: SUNDAY CABARET WITH YVETTE COLEMAN & FLORIAN HOEFNER

Soprano Yvette Coleman, a native of Newfoundland, now residing in Toronto, will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Sunday, December 4th at 7:00 pm. She is accompanied by Florian Hoefner at the piano. Coleman is lauded for her virtuosity; captivating audiences with manifold styles of voice including opera, art song, jazz, folk, and musical theatre. A pupil of internationally renowned soprano Elizabeth McDonald, Yvette is now a graduate of The University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Performance voice. She has trained at the Vancouver International Song Institute, Boston University Tanglewood Institute and The St. Andrews' Vocal Technique Program. She recently returned from The Center for Opera Studies in Sulmona, Italy performing in Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea under the direction of Timothy Nelson. Yvette ranked first in the Newfoundland Provincial voice competition and was a two time winner of Rotary festival junior and senior rosebowls for voice. She gained distinction in the Classical Singer Competition in New York and earned first class distinction at NATS in Toronto, Ontario. She was the recipient of The Craig L. Hoyt, Randall Marsh & Kristopher Waterman Memorial awards for music and was granted scholarship to The Manhattan School of Music, University of Toronto (accepted) , McGill University and Queens University. Separate of the classical world, Yvette has thrived as a working artist for the past five years at The Gros Morne Summer Music Festival as well as a featured performer at The Woody Point Writers Festival. Collaborating with musicians from Asia, United States, Netherlands, and Canada, Yvette has learned from highly reputable and established musicians since a young age and was instrumental in the ensemble formed by these artists known as 'Dark by Five' as the solo vocalist, actress and dancer. Together with strings, percussion, piano, and woodwinds the ensemble is celebrated for stretching the boundaries of the classical tradition and achieving a perfect marriage of classical music, drama and dance with an expansive set of repertoire under the theatrical direction of Rachel Peake. Yvette has world premiered composer Jason Nett's major works, 'Trolley Car', 'Cab Fare' and 'Splash' and has also premiered Welsh composer Bernard Kane's 'Lie still, sleep, be calmed' in London, England at The Dylan Thomas Festival with the Kane String Players. She will join The Kane Players again this fall to sing Kane's new work - 'Hunchback' in New York City. There is a $15 cover.

Grammy Award winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill brings his Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra to BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Sundays at 9:00 & 11:00pm. Called the leader of the "first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz", O'Farrill was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte. The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra is the resident large format ensemble of the nonprofit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) founded by Arturo O'Farrill in 2007 and dedicated to preserving the music and heritage of big band Latin jazz, supporting its performance for new audiences, and educating young people in the understanding and performance of this important cultural treasure. The Peter Bernstein Quartet featuring Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride & Greg Hutchinson, will perform at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Friday through Sunday, January 2nd through 4th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Peter Bernstein is a real musician's guitarist, with maturity, impeccable feel, and a sound comparable to straight-ahead favorites like Jim Hall and Wes Montgomery. He seems to be everyone's favorite sideman these days, and he is also increasingly renowned as a leader and composer. Bernstein will be joined by GRAMMY Award winning pianist and keyboardist Brad Mehldau. Mehldau has recorded and/or toured with Joshua Redman, Christian McBride, Brian Blade, Jimmy Cobb, Wayne Shorter, Pat Metheny, Willie Nelson, and many more. Joining the preternaturally young Maye on her 15th Metropolitan Room engagement are her trio consisting of pianist/conductor Billy Stritch, bassist Tom Hubbard, and drummer Ray Marchica. Following her critically acclaimed show 'Hard Rain' at 59E59 THEATERS (59 East 59th Street, NYC - 212-279-4200) this fall, Britain's top song stylist and international cabaret singer Barb Jungr presents the American premiere of a special concert originally created for London Festival of Cabaret 2013, 'In Mad About the Boy and No Regrets', on Friday through Sunday, January 2nd through 4th at 7:00 pm at 54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551). The show will walk on the dark side of love and loss, sex and corruption of the soul as Barb sings Springsteen, Coward, Dylan, Weill, Cohen and more. Every performance is a roller coaster ride. In 2013 and 2014 Barb Jungr performed in the O'Neill Connecticut Celebration of Cabaret twice, the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, toured Australia, and performed in New York, Toronto, and across the UK. NYC: SUNDAY JAZZ BRUNCH: JANIS SIEGEL: THE REQUINTE TRIO WITH NANNY ASSIS & JOHN DI MARTINO AT THE BLUE NOTE
The Requinte Trio Project will be sharing the fusion of American Jazz and Brazilian music, forming a "creative combustion" of music, at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Sunday, January 4th at 11:30 am. The Requinte Trio (Janis Siegel, Nanny Assis & John Di Martino) are fusing the talents and musical colors of American and Brazilian artists through their common love of lyrical melodies and delicious grooves; creating sensual music with a broad range of influences - a musical "cocktail" of sorts. They intend to delve more deeply into the beautiful rhythms of Brazil. Through this project, they will be challenging and pushing each other out of their respective comfort zones. As the project develops, the trio will be documenting the creative process, sharing their rehearsals and insights. There is a $35 cover. **Price includes brunch, music and a drink.** 

NYC: SUNDAY JAZZ BRUNCH WITH GABRIELLE STRAVELLI

Bistro Award winning vocalist, Gabrielle Stravelli, returns with her Sunday Jazz Brunch on August 11th at LE PESCADEUX(90 Thompson Street, NYC - 212-966-0021), a French restaurant in the heart of Soho. They will play three sets from 12:30 to 4:00 pm. She will be joined by Saul Rubin on guitar and Pat O'Leary on bass in this charming boite that offers a great, well-priced menu and cozy atmosphere. Award-winning vocalist Gabrielle Stravelli has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal following through her unique take on material from the new American songbook as well as classic standards by artists as varied as Pink Floyd and Duke Ellington, Dolly Parton and Johnny Mercer. A trained actor, Gabrielle has a soulful sensitivity for the story in the lyric. Gabrielle has performed on stages from Amsterdam to New York including Carnegie Hall, Iridium Jazz Club, Birdland, and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Reservations are strongly suggested. No cover, no minimum. 

TORONTO: SUNDAY BRUNCH WITH THE ADRIAANSE-STANLEY DUO

The Adriaanse-Stanley Duo performs at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Sunday, January 4th at 12:00 pm as part of the club's Sunday Brunch Series. The duo has been developing their exceptional rapport since meeting while attending York University over 4 years ago. Their musical focus is on the interpretation of the Great American Songbook with attention not so much to the expression of jazz language but to the nuances of form and dynamics. Chris Adriaanse is a young electric and upright bassist and educator based in Toronto. He appears as a member of a number of groups, and as a freelance musician, open to play in just about any situation. He can be heard on records by Lullaby North and Shaky Knees, and can be seen performing with the Adriaanse-Stanley Duo, the Doug Tielli Band, the Jon Foster Group, the Happy Pals and countless groups of jazz musicians and free improvisers in small performance and private event contexts. Music has taken him on adventures to Europe, across Canada, and Ecuador, let him perform with the TSO, other small orchestras, CCMC and some of Toronto's finest musicians. He dabbles in composing for small jazz ensembles, and his compositions can occasionally be heard at performances. Liam Stanley is a young jazz guitarist from Toronto, Ontario. Liam has been playing guitar for over a decade, having studied jazz with Humber alumni Tristan Clark, and York professors Roy Patterson and Lorne Lofsky. Liam is currently in his sixth year at York University. While at York Liam has had the privilege of studying with Kevin Turcotte, Kelly Jefferson and Barry Elmes. Following his third and fifth years at York Liam was nominated for the Mary Alice Stuart/JAZZ .FM91 Scholarship. Liam has been heard numerous times on JazzFM 91.1's Jazzology and will be featured in 2014. In October of 2011 Liam performed Tim Brady's Twenty Quarter Inch Jacks during the X Avant Festival in Toronto in a 20 guitar ensemble alongside Ted Quinlan and Roy Patterson. In the summer of 2012 Liam performed with his trio at the Brantford Jazz Festival, and followed it up in 2013 and 2014 with performances at the TD Toronto Jazz Festival with the Jon Foster Group. There is a $5 cover.

The show spans six categories: music; burlesque; comedy/spoken word; drag; theatre/opera; magic/puppetry. Broadcast legend Joe Franklin (Guinness Book of World Records Longest Continuous Talk Show Host) will serve as grand marshal for the show.

At 60 continuous hours of entertainment the Metropolitan Room's bid to eclipse the Guinness World Record for longest variety show (currently standing at 12 hours and 8 minutes) is also poised to obliterate other records such as most performers in a single show. The event reached that goal at 7:13 am on Friday, January 2nd, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE was proud to be in the room when that occurred.
