NYC: NEXT SINGING EXPERIENCE WORKSHOP STARTS APRIL 14th

Linda Amiel Burns, the Director of THE SINGING EXPERIENCE, announces that the next workshop, "Spring Fever" will start on Wednesday, April 14th. The workshops performance will be at THE TRIAD (158 West 72nd Street, NYC - 212-362-2590 - ) on Wednesday, May 12th at 7:30 pm. The six-session workshop consists of four rehearsals, a performance, and a VideoViewing Party to evaluate and celebrate the performance. MAC Award winning director Linda Amiel Burns personally conducts each workshop. THE SINGING EXPERIENCE in its 33rd season, (established 1977) was begun to give aspiring cabaret and musical theater performers the opportunity to explore their talents, conquer fear, and develop self-confidence by learning the "tools of the trade" through actually performing before audiences in a supportive and nurturing environment. Need help writing a press release?
Need help writing a press release to submit to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE (and elsewhere)? Its really quite simple if you keep a few things in mind - you would be bowled over by the number of incomplete press releases I receive each day, even from "professional" press reps. Drop me a note at stuhamstra@svhamstra.com and I'll send you all the clues and a sample press release that you can use as a guide. After all, the better the release you submit, the less work for me! (I received a press release over the weekend, for example, written in ALL CAPS! It had to be completely re-written, and I would have normally tossed it in the trash, but its for a show I believe in and wanted to help promote). Most important: A flier is not a press release!

MAC NOMINEES TO BE ANNOUNCED THIS WEEK
The MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets) website is still down (as of this morning) but that doesn't mean they're not in business. Everyone is waiting in eager anticipation for the announcement of the official nominees for the 2010 MAC AWARDS, to be made on Thursday, March 25th at 1:00 pm at THE BARNES & NOBLE BOOKSTORE, NYC. It will be too late to include in our Thursday issue, but we will post the nominees on our CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE BLOG as soon as they are received and will announce their posting on our http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ and on Twitter.
By the way, the "straw poll" is back - and "ballots" will be sent to all members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to make their choices for their favorite nominees. We're trying to decide whether to list the tallies on the website as the votes are received or to wait until the MAC voting closes. We might even award a (non-cash) prize to the author of the ballot received that most closely matches the final official voting. Stay tuned.
Remember, MAC voters may only vote for shows/performers that they actually have seen in performance. Since many of our members do not live in the NYC area, we won't have that restriction. You can vote based on your knowledge of the performer from previous shows, from reviews you've read, from reports from others, and just from your heart. SAD NEW - Cabaret Favorite Claiborne Cary has passed away
We received word a few minutes ago that Claiborne Cary passed away yesterday in California. A long time favorite in NYC cabaret, she had been in ill health for 3 years. Prior to moving to California she attended and performed in cabaret events and benefits for many years, and was a charter member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. More details as we receive them.

Nearly 75 new subscribers signed up to receive the free, twice-weekly CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletters in the past week, and I need to explain once again how this all works. You send in your news items (in text format - a flier is not a press release) and I include them in the next newsletter where it fits, by date. I try to work in news for a least 3 weeks ahead. Items appear just once. All items get added to the DIARY/DATEBOOK section of the website in date order, where they stay until the date of the last performance listed in the item - moving to the front page on the website the day of the event.

I received a press release over the weekend from THE TOWN HALL (123 West 43rd Street, NYC - 212-997-1929 - ) about the next "Broadway By The Year" show, which will be Monday night, March 22nd at 8:00 pm, at (naturally) THE TOWN HALL. See listings below for details, but I must add that the the first show of the series in February was fantastic! Top talent - top performances! One of these days I am going to "hit the wall" proclaiming each show "the best show yet", but the February one truly deserved the plaudit. The TOWN HALL (1500 seats) was very nearly sold out, so if you're planning on going to the show on the 22nd, get thee to a phone/computer and order your tickets pronto. Performers scheduled to appear as of this date are Tom Andersen, Esther Beckman, David Brian Colbert, Joyce Breach, David Brian Colbert, Scott Coulter, Cynthia Crane, John De Marco, Baby Jane Dexter, Lina Koutrakos, Sue Matsuki, Julie Reyburn, Jerry Scott, Marcus Simeone, Tracy Stark, KT Sullivan and Jon Weber. Lead by Jacque Lueken, Three Cat Education Executive Director, "A Summer in the Theater" will offer children and teens an opportunity to experience the world of theater and cabaret in a safe nurturing environment. Exploring musicals, plays, cabaret, and show choir, the camps will teach kids the fundamentals of performance with potential opportunities to appear in one of Three Cat Productions "Cabaret Concerts" as well as in venues throughout the Chicagoland area. "A Summer in the Theater" runs from June 14th to August 20th this summer. There are sections of various lengths and costs, and this sounds like a terrific program for youngsters. The first time I met Kevin Scott Hall was in the piano bar at EIGHTY EIGHT'S - soon after the club opened. He would drop by with another singer, a young lady who's name I can't remember, and together they would sing a few songs, before moving on to another piano bar (there used to be at least 7 or 8 others in the Village alone at that time). That's a long time ago. Over the years since, in addition to singing, he's become a songwriter, producer, director, journalist and master teacher. Kevin now adds novelist to his long list of accomplishments! His first novel, "Off the Charts!" about a young man who, having just received an inheritance, attempts to resurrect a one-hit-wonder dance diva's singing career. There will be a Book Launch Party at UNCLE CHARLIE'S (139 East 45th Street 2nd Floor, NYC - 212-661-9097 - ) on Wednesday, March 24th, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. Hall will read from the novel and sign copies. He may even sing a few tunes with his friend Clare Cooper, who will be playing piano in the lounge.

Millions of folks tuned in regularly, and Joey would interview scores of cabaret performers promotion their shows, even giving them a chance to performer a few songs. Now we've been told that the show will be discontinued - final airing to be on April 1st. Let's how that this is an April Fool's story. We'll have more to say soon.

Before I give any kid of report on the MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA held on Tuesday night (March 2nd) at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN, I want to repeat my thank-you to Tom Stajmiger, who produced the show on behalf of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - lining up the cast, arranging the show order, and even selling about 2-dozen tickets for the show! And to Richard Skipper, who MC'd the event with class, style and pizzaz. And to Alex Rybeck, who not only accompanied all the performers on all the songs, but even contributed two of his own songs to the show!
The sold-out show was a salute to "The Composers of Cabaret" - not all the composers, of course, since in that case we would need a dozen or more show nights. Tom chose for this show to honor (in the order their songs were sung) Bobbie Horowitz, John Bucchino, Amanda McBroom, Karcy Heisler & Zina Goldrich, David Friedman, Scott Alan, Adam Gwon and the afore-mentioned Alex Rybeck. Each composer was represented by one or two songs.
And to sing their songs he chose some of the top singers from Broadway & Cabaret (in the same order as above): Richard Skipper, Raissa Katona Bennett, Scott Coulter, Jenny Powers, Becca Johnson Southworth, Lisa Brescia, Liz Callaway and Faith Price. It was truly an amazing cast! 15 songs in all made up the 90-minute show (almost to the minute) and they ranged from the very familiar to the more obscure - yet all of them precious gems.
If I were to pick my favorites (and everyone's tastes differ) I would have to choose maybe 7 or 8, just an indication of the quality of the material and the excitement each performer brought to them.
Richard Skipper chose Bobby Horowitz' "special material" number, written for him, to start the night with humor and celebration - a perfect introduction to the evening's intentions.
John Bucchino's songs are so filled with emotion and subtext, it took a person with the talent of Brian Lane Green to do them full justice. His rendition of "If I Ever Say I'm Over You" had me weeping almost at the start of the evening. He brought the same intensity to Bucchino's "Taking the Wheel. Raissa Katona Bennet had the delightful job of singing "The Lift" (her husband is a plastic surgeon) plus one of my McBroom favorites, "Putting Things Away."
One cannot praise enough the talents of Scott Coulter - who can go from a whisper to a belt and back without strain, first singing the Heisler/Goldrich gem "Over the Mood" and then moving to the exciting "Welcome the Rain". Jenny Powers did full justice to the two songs of David Friedman she chose, "It's Getting Hot in Here" (with some 'strip-tease' overtones) and "Nothing in Common." Such an attractive lady - such attractive vocals!
Becca Johnson Southworth (who was one of the waiters for the event and one of the performers) delivered Scott Alan's "His Name" and "Never, Neverland" with the same perfection and charm as she served our drinks. And Liza Brescia was brilliant in her delivery of two Adam Gwon songs. "Canceling the Party" and "I'll Be Here."
After some rather rambling remarks by "your's truly" (I had written out Tom's last name phonetically and then forgot to thank him, and I skipped Skipper's thank you as well), the final two performers took the stage to close the show with two songs by our most talented (and hard working) musical director Alex Rybeck: ""What a Funny Boy He Is", sung by Liz Callaway and "Happily Married Man" performed by Faith Prince - both performed elegantly and with glee. What a night!
There was lots of schmoozing, picture taking, hand shaking and hugging going on after the show - cabaret people are probably the best in the world at schmoozing! Lots of credit goes to the "behind the scenes" folks: Joey Pier on lights & sound, Kenny Bell (who manages and seats the room) and booking manager Phil Bond. We've come to take their fantastic hospitality for granted, a natural result of their ability to deliver perfection will remaining out of the spotlight!

His rendition of "If I Ever Say I'm Over You" had me weeping almost at the start of the evening. He brought the same intensity to Bucchino's "Taking the Wheel. Raissa Katona Bennet had the delightful job of singing "The Lift" (her husband is a plastic surgeon) plus one of my McBroom favorites, "Putting Things Away."
One cannot praise enough the talents of Scott Coulter - who can go from a whisper to a belt and back without strain, first singing the Heisler/Goldrich gem "Over the Mood" and then moving to the exciting "Welcome the Rain". Jenny Powers did full justice to the two songs of David Friedman she chose, "It's Getting Hot in Here" (with some 'strip-tease' overtones) and "Nothing in Common." Such an attractive lady - such attractive vocals!
Becca Johnson Southworth (who was one of the waiters for the event and one of the performers) delivered Scott Alan's "His Name" and "Never, Neverland" with the same perfection and charm as she served our drinks. And Liza Brescia was brilliant in her delivery of two Adam Gwon songs. "Canceling the Party" and "I'll Be Here."
After some rather rambling remarks by "your's truly" (I had written out Tom's last name phonetically and then forgot to thank him, and I skipped Skipper's thank you as well), the final two performers took the stage to close the show with two songs by our most talented (and hard working) musical director Alex Rybeck: ""What a Funny Boy He Is", sung by Liz Callaway and "Happily Married Man" performed by Faith Prince - both performed elegantly and with glee. What a night!
There was lots of schmoozing, picture taking, hand shaking and hugging going on after the show - cabaret people are probably the best in the world at schmoozing! Lots of credit goes to the "behind the scenes" folks: Joey Pier on lights & sound, Kenny Bell (who manages and seats the room) and booking manager Phil Bond. We've come to take their fantastic hospitality for granted, a natural result of their ability to deliver perfection will remaining out of the spotlight!

SAVE THE DATE: Saturday, April 10th benefit for Gregory Kennell
MARCH IS CABARET MONTH
SAVE THE DATE: On Saturday, April 10th at 2:00 pm, John Hoglund and Geri Malino are producing a benefit for Gregory Kennell at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER. Gregory recently was hospitalized with an unknown illness and soon sank into a coma that lasted two months. While Gregory has now regained consciousness, he remains paralyzed and only able to communicate and move his left hand slightly. Already, major artists from the entertainment community have signed on for this worthy event for one of cabaret's most consistent and persistent champions. In the past, Gregory has designed graphics for numerous artists, magazines, newspapers and albums. He has also served as a member of the MAC Board of Directors. All proceeds will be earmarked specifically to supplement his much needed physical therapy and other long time rehabilitative services which are extensive and expensive. Insurance does not cover all of these costs.

SHOW CANCELLATION: BARB JUNGR AT THE CAFE CARLYLE
We just received word that Barb Jungr's show - which was to have its opening night tonight - has been cancelled tonight due to weather. Call the Carlyle - show is still scheduled for Friday & Saturday and Wednesday through Saturday, next week.

SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT THE MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA: I waited until all the tickets were sold (since I didn't clear this with anyone and in the past have been accused of exploiting the memory of someone), but at the MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA on Tuesday, the 2nd of March, I plan to dedicate the evening to the memory of the late Earl Wentz and his personal project, the Great American Composer series, http://www.americomps.com/ , which he produced starting in 2000, mostly at DON'T TELL MAMA in NYC. Not only did Earl use these events to bring to our attention some great songwriters/composers, but by creating original, multi-performer revues each time, he exposed us to hundreds of great vocalists. Earl attended many of our CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE events over the years, and was a GOLD member as well.
