NYC: BRAZIL + JAZZ - JEANNE GIES WITH CHORO DAS
Jeanne Gies with Choro Das present Brazil + Jazz at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Wednesday, August 12th at 7:00 pm. On a recent visit to Sao Paulo: the exciting young Brazilian group Choro das 3 jammed with innovative vocalist Jeanne Gies. The result: musical magic, a unique collaboration of genres never before heard on either continent, and a mutual commitment to record and perform together across the globe. Choro is a 100 year old Brazilian music genre that gave rise to Samba and Bossa Nova. Sisters Corina, Lia, and Elisa put their own spin on this traditional style with a variety of string and wind instruments; their father Eduardo provides a fiery percussive accompaniment on the pandeiro. Unite this group with the freedom of expression exemplified by a seasoned jazz singer such as Gies, and the result is nothing short of electrifying. Jeanne Gies is recognized for her full-bodied, emotionally expressive voice and distinctive phrasing. She has performed and recorded with a stunning array of jazz greats, and is increasingly lauded for her original compositions worldwide. Her recent tours include Germany, Italy, Scotland, France, England, and Brazil, where she penned the lyrics and recorded the music of composer Manu Lafer. Choro Das 3 have recorded and toured for several years, and frequently appear on popular television and radio shows across Brazil. There is a $20 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
NYC: ANALISA BELL BRINGS HER NEW SHOW "PERTHONALITY" TO METROPOLITAN ROOM
One of Perth's finest cabaret performers is bringing her critically acclaimed talents to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Wednesday, August 12th at 9:30 pm. Equally comfortable in pulling tears and laughter out of her audiences, Analisa Bell is one of Australia's rising cabaret stars, and a featured regular at The Butterfly Club in Melbourne and at Downstairs at the Maj, Perth's premier cabaret venue. Analisa has performed at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Melbourne Fringe Festival, Short + Sweet Cabaret, Sydney Cabaret Showcase, Perth's Fringe World Festival, as well as making her New York City debut at The Duplex in 2012 after participating at the International Cabaret Conference at Yale. Bell is the winner of this year's Shana Farr Cabaret Competition at the Annual Broadway Spring Festival, and is currently being mentored by Tony-award winner Faith Prince. Bell has also performed in showcase nights at Birdland Jazz Club and Don't Tell Mama's. Bell has devised and performed in a number of sell-out one woman shows including: The Fat Lady Sings, Gold-digger, Two Weeks in Paris, Strange Fruit: A Billie Holiday Tribute, Gershwin and Other Men: Songs to Warm the Heart and Diamonds: Marilyn Monroe Lives Inside Me. Her collaborative cabarets have also had successful runs, including You've Got That Thing! - A Tribute to Cole Porter, for which she received critical acclaim for her portrayal of Ethel Merman. There is a $22.50 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
