NYC: SHARON MCNIGHT IS ALIVE AND WELL AT THE DUPLEX!

Sharon McNight is Alive and Well and performing at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 212-255-5438) on Tuesdays, July 21st through August 11th at 9:30 pm. Musical director is Ian Herman. From standing on a stage made from beer cases in San Francisco's Castro District to her Nomination for Broadway's Tony Award, a Theater World Award Winner, MAC Winner Sharon's shows feature her celebrated humor and eclectic song choice. There is a $25 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

NYC: MAMA'S NEXT BIG ACT - NEW 12 WEEK CONTEST!

DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788) opened the first annual "Mama's Next BIG Act!" began on Tuesday, June 9th and continues every week at 9:30 pm. The contest will run for 12 consecutive weeks, every Tuesday through August 25th. The event is a bigger than average, 12-week competition that mixes styles and genres. Voted by the audience and a cavalcade of celebrity judges, the contest will invite solo, duo and group acts in the following categories: music, magic, drag, burlesque, and variety. Mama's Next BIG Act! is open to any musical act over the age of 18. Musical acts may consist of solo, duo or groups, and may be of any genre or style. Acts may use the club's pianist or bring their own. A guitar or bass may also be used. Tracks may be used, but live music is preferred. Vocal Groups, Drag Artists, Variety and Burlesque acts are encouraged to submit, as well as Solo and Duo Vocal Acts. The preliminary rounds are June 9th, June 16th, and June 23rd. Each week, contestants will be eliminated based on votes by the judges as well as the audience. There is a $12 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

NYC: SINGER / SONGWRITER CAROL MCCANN AT THE METROPOLITAN ROOM

Singer/Songwriter Carol McCann performs at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Tuesday, July 21st at 7:00 pm. McCann has been has been seen and heard in the New York clubs for over two decades, and has been a writer member of ASCAP since 1991. Venues include The Metropolitan Room, The Firebird Cafe, The Town Hall, Don't Tell Mama, The Duplex, Eighty Eight's, Upstairs at Greene Street and the West Bank Cafe. A celebrated singer/songwriter, Carol's music synthesizes different elements of country, jazz, rock and blues to create a unique, compelling, and very human sound, with just a breath of theatricality. She performs a mix of standards, original songs and an occasional twisted, re-worded classic. Carol's music has been featured in a series produced for the BBC, called BORDER CAFE, and is included on the album of the same title. Additionally, her songs have been performed by such popular performers as Mary Foster Conklin, Lisa Asher, Lena Koutrakis, and Catherine DuPuis. She performs with long time accompanist, arranger and collaborator, John DiPinto. Carol also spent many years as a working actor in both regional and Off Broadway Theatre. Favorite productions include, Assassins, Annie Get Your Gun, Pump Boys and Dinettes, Charley's Aunt, Midsummer Night's Dream, The Song is Kern, The Male Animal, and A Flea in Her Ear, among others. She is co-owner of the award winning New York based production company, Grandview Island Productions, and is married to her partner-in-life-and-business Michael Lesser. Together they have also produced two fabulous daughters, Emily and Julia. There is a $25 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

NYC: JAZZ LEGEND ANNIE ROSS TUESDAYS THE METROPOLITAN ROOM

Jazz legend Annie Ross continues her unprecedented, record-breaking, multi-year run at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440), every Tuesday night at 9:30 pm. Ms. Ross has been an abundant contributor to the art of jazz for over 50 years. Born in the UK, she has been a permanent resident of the USA for many years and a US citizen since 2001. Annie Ross is one of the pioneers of vocalese and the composer of "Twisted", one of the most well known examples of that art, as well as "Farmers Market", "Jackie" and many others. A founding member of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, considered the greatest jazz vocal ensemble of all time, her influence is present in all subsequent practitioners of vocalese. "Twisted" has been recorded by a host of vocalists, including some not normally associated with jazz, including Joni Mitchell and Bette Midler. There is a $25 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

NYC: DISTORTED DIZNEE AT THE BEECHMAN

Distorted Diznee, an outrageous Las Vegas-style parody revue of some of America's most beloved animated classics, will be presented at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATRE (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909) on Tuesday, July 21st at 7:00 pm. You will be transported to a New World, as a troupe of fabulous drag queens takes you on a twisted - and very adult - journey, catapulting you back to your childhood into a Magical Kingdom where dreams come true. This ever-evolving 75-minute non-stop extravaganza features high-energy dance numbers, comedy, dazzling costumes and lip-syncing "ladies" - with a bit of Cher, Patti LuPone, Idina Menzel and Rihanna thrown in for good measure! There is a $20 cover plus a $20 food/drink minimum.

NYC: MARA WILSON & JENNY JAFFE PRESENT COMEDIANS WHO LOVE MUSICAL THEATRE

Grace McLean Lives in Concert is the interactive theater concert by acclaimed singer /songwriter /actor Grace McLean which will be presented at 54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551) on Tuesday, July 21st at 9:30 pm. Fresh off her sold out no holds barred Lincoln Center American Songbook concert and the world premier of the Michael Mayer helmed Brooklynite at The Vineyard Theatre, Grace now comes to 54 Below. Join her band Grace McLean & Them Apples for an evening of original music, re-imagined covers, stories about boys, and bubbles. In addition to performing in Off-Broadway hits like Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812, Brooklynite, and Bedbugs!!!, Grace also makes time for her acclaimed original music. With a sound that combines Regina Spektor's quirkiness, Nellie McKay's jazz sensibilities, Fiona Apple's irreverence, Kimbra's sass and Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs' rhythm, McLean adds up to one beautiful weirdo. In addition to the previously mentioned sold out Lincoln Center American Songbook performance, Grace McLean & Them Apples have just returned from a US State Department tour of Pakistan. In New York, McLean recently performed at the Museum of the American Indian, where she performed as part of a panel discussion on storytelling for The Economist's 2012 Ideas Summit. NYC: LUCY ALIBAR: THROW ME ON THE BURNPILE AND LIGHT ME UP

Lucy Alibar presents Throw Me On the Burnpile And Light Me Up at JOE'S PUB at THE PUBLIC THEATRE (425 Lafayette Street, NYC - 212-967-7555) on Tuesday, July 21st at 7:00 pm. A lecherous goat, Pentecostals on the radio, a house full of dogs, cats, and Febreze and Daddy's .38 special. These are just some of the ingredients in a delicious and magical stew of stories about a singular childhood in Grady County, written and performed by Lucy Alibar, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of the hit film Beasts Of The Southern Wild. See a landscape you won't soon forget. There is a $20 cover.

NYC: JOOJ (FEATURING SOOK-YIN LEE & ADAM LITOVITZ) / JESSE HARRIS

JOOJ performs at JOE'S PUB at THE PUBLIC THEATRE (425 Lafayette Street, NYC - 212-967-7555) on Tuesday, July 21st at 9:30 pm. JOOJ is multimedia artist S.Y. Lee and writer and film teacher A. Litovitz. Lee, a long-time collaborator of New York City based filmmaker, John Cameron Mitchell, starred in the acclaimed movie, Shortbus. The JOOJ sound is guided by principles of minimalism, melody, and experimentalism - torch-songs from an interior, expressionistic place. Their live performance is intimate: at turns cathartic and unhinged, yet grounded.
