NYC: DANIEL REICHARD'S DECKED OUT HOLIDAY
PARTY!
The Broadway at Birdland concert series is happy to announce that for the seventh time, Broadway and concert hall star Daniel Reichard will perform his solo holiday show in New York City. This year's concert is titled "Daniel Reichard's Decked Out Holiday Party" and will deck the halls of BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080 - ) on Sunday, December 14th at 6:00 pm and Monday, December 15th at 7:00 pm. Backed by a seven-piece band of first-class musicians, Reichard will present favorite songs from past Christmas shows, and will introduce new material. Nostalgic and sacred Christmas standards, Hanukkah classics, and non-holiday songs alike will be sung. This year, you are his guest at a joyous, seasonal celebration. Festive, dressy, or decked out attire is suggested. Reichard's special guest, accomplished Israeli cellist, Elad Kabilio will drop by the party, and the evening will be musically directed by Jesse Vargas. Every year, Reichard donates all of his proceeds to a different charitable organization. For this edition, he will be making a contribution to Music Talks, which provides open educational concerts with opportunities for participation and conversation that reach children and adults alike, while we develop community outreach programs intended to bring music to new audiences, including children's programs through the YMCA, JCC, Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC and NYC Schools. There is a $30-$50 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: GATO BARBIERI AT THE BLUE NOTE

Gato Barbieri returns to THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Sunday, December 14th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Mystical yet fiery, passionately romantic yet supremely cool - you hear those first few notes from that instantly recognizable tenor sax, and know you're in the unique musical world of Gato Barbieri. His enduring career has covered virtually the entire jazz landscape, from free jazz with trumpeter Don Cherry and avant-garde in the mid-'60s, to film scoring and his ultimate embrace of Latin music throughout the '70s and '80s. Barbieri began playing tenor saxophone with his own band in the late '50s and moved to Rome with his Italian-born first wife Michelle in 1962, where he began collaborating with Cherry. The two recorded two albums for Blue Note: Complete Communion (1965) and Symphony for Improvisers (1966), both of which are considered classics of free group improvisation. He also collaborated with Steve Lacy, Abdullah Ibrahim, Charlie Haden, Carla Bley and the Jazz Composer's Orchestra, Stanley Clarke, Airto Moreira, Chico O'Farrell, and Lonnie Liston Smith during this period. There is a $30-$45 cover.

NYC: CHARLES MCPHERSON QUINTET AT DIZZY'S

The Charles McPherson Quintet (Charles McPherson, alto saxophone; Steve Nelson, vibraphone; Yotam Silberstein, guitar; Kiyoshi Kitagawa, bass; and Chuck McPherson, drums) will perform at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Thursday through Sunday, December 11th through 14th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Saxophonist Charles McPherson has been recording as a leader for 50 years. The legendary musician played with Charles Mingus from 1960 to 1972 and has recorded with artists from Art Farmer to the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. McPherson was greatly influenced by Charlie Parker (and featured in Clint Eastwood's film Bird), and though he can readily channel the bop fury of Bird and his contemporaries, McPherson has also developed a powerful style of his own, both as a great composer and an elite soloist. Tonight's outstanding band features the equally storied Chuck McPherson on drums, young Israeli guitarist Yotam Silberstein on guitar, New York staple Steve Nelson on vibraphone, and prolific performer and composer Kiyoshi Kitagawa on bass. Call for cover/minimum information.
