MAURICIO DE SOUZA AT CAFE NOCTAMBULO AT PANGEA

Jazz drummer Mauricio de Souza will perform at CAFE NOCTAMBULO AT PANGEA (178 Second Avenue, NYC - 212-995-0900) on Thursday, December 18th with sets from 7:00 to 11:00 pm. Born in Brasilia, Brazil, Mauricio de Souza is a jazz drummer who easily performs in both traditional jazz and Brazilian jazz styles. His good taste and finesse have allowed him to play in numerous settings with various accomplished musicians. De Souza studied with world renowned jazz drummer and master teacher Joe Morello for eight years. He also had a year of private studies with distinguished all-round percussion teacher Glenn Weber. Aside from the inspiration of Mr. Morello, other influential performers include Buddy Rich, Airto Moreira, Dave Weckl, Roy Haynes, and Bill Stewart. He has performed at some of the finest jazz venues and festivals (mostly as a band leader) with his two groups: Bossa Brasil (Brazilian Jazz) and Mauricio de Souza Group (Straight Ahead Jazz). In New York, de Souza performs monthly at Garage Jazz Club and has been heard at Blue Note, Smoke Jazz Club, Smalls Jazz Club, Lenox Lounge, Saint Peter's Church, Kitano Hotel, Bar Next Door, Whitney Museum, New York Polish Consulate, Cutting Room, Via Brasil, SOB's, New York Athletic Club, and Bubby's (Brooklyn) among many others. There is a $20 cover plus a $20 food/drink minimum.

NYC: FLY UP! WITH JOSHUA DIXON AT THE DUPLEX

Joshua Dixon, after thrilling audiences in Scott Evan Davis' PICTURE PERFECT, returns to THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 212-255-5438) on Thursday, December 18th at 4:00 pm in his solo cabaret debutshow, FLY UP! Featuring songs by Rogers & Hammerstein, Bastille, Andrew Lippa, & Stephen Sondheim and others, the show will explore his trials, tribulations, and triumphs of growing up Mormon, or in fact, simply growing up. There is a $15 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

NYC: BEN RIMALOWER DEBUTS NEW PLAY "BAD WITH MONEY" 

Ben Rimalower debuts new play "Bad With Money" at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 212-255-5438) running on Mondays at 7:00 pm through December 29th and Thursdays at 9:30 pm through December 18th. Ben Rimalower's addiction to spending beyond his means has driven him to extreme lengths all his life. In BAD WITH MONEY he charts his sometimes hilarious, sometimes harrowing struggle to overcome his problem - or get rich trying. "Bad With Money" is written and performed by Ben Rimalower and directed by Aaron Mark. Rimalower's first solo show, the long-running hit Patti Issues, explored his obsession with Broadway diva Patti LuPone and his relationship with his troubled gay father. Bad with Money delves into even deeper personal territory with the story of his struggle with debt - a journey that takes him through drug addiction, prostitution, fraud and multiple betrayals. There is a $25-$50 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

NYC: A CHRISTMAS CAROLE & A NEW YEAR'S YVES

Unwrap your gifts a week early with this surprise event at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATRE (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909) on Thursday, December 18th at 7:00 pm: 'A Christmas Carole & A New Year's Yves' Here's a Holiday Special in the classiest tradition, but with a twist or two. Get up close and personal with Broadway's brightest as the stars bare their souls, interact with the crowd and celebrate all things BROADWAY. There is a $5 cover plus a $15 food/drink minimum. 

NYC: 54 BELOW PRESENTS LORNA LUFT

Lorna Luft will perform at 54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551) this holiday season with a show packed with popular selections from her mother's catalogue, the all-American songbook and holiday favorites. Performances are scheduled for Wednesday, December 17th at 7:00 pm and Thursday, December 18th at 7:00 & 9:30 pm. This will be her 54 BELOW debut. Born to legendary entertainer Judy Garland and producer Sid Luft, Lorna Luft made her performing debut singing on The Judy Garland Show. Since then, she has had dozens of starring and guest-starring roles on film and television, ranging from Grease 2 and Where the Boys Are '84 to the series Murder She Wrote and Sean Saves the World. Lorna was co-executive producer of Life with Judy Garland, the five-time Emmy Award-winning miniseries based on her best-selling memoir, Me and My Shadows. For the past several years, Lorna has been starring in American and British productions of Irving Berlin's White Christmas, including the 2011 production at the Paper Mill Playhouse. Her other theatrical credits include her Broadway debut in Promises, Promises; Off-Broadway's Snoopy and Extremities; the national tour of They're Playing Our Song; a British tour of Pack of Lies; and Gypsy, Grease, Guys and Dolls, Mame and The Unsinkable Molly Brown, among many others. Lorna is also a gifted concert and cabaret artist, performing in the world's most prestigious venues, including The Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall, The London Palladium and L'Olympia in Paris. Her highly acclaimed multi-media production, Songs My Mother Taught Me - The Judy Garland Songbook, melds one of the world's most familiar songbooks with personal memories. It won two Ovation Awards, and a CD based on the show was released by First Night Records. There is a $45-$85 cover plus a $25 food/drink minimum.

NYC: STEVE TYRELL AT THE CAFE CARLYLE THROUGH DECEMBER 31st

Steve Tyrell returns for this annual Holiday season performances at THE CAFE CARLYLE (35 East 76th Street, NYC - 212-744-1600) on Tuesdays through Saturdays, November 25th through December 31st (no show December 25th) at 8:45 pm with additional late shows on Friday & Saturdays at 10:45 pm. Grammy Award-winning vocalist Steve Tyrell is truly a renaissance man. In over four decades in the music business, he has achieved great success as an artist, producer, songwriter, music supervisor, and performer. In 2005, after the passing of the legendary Bobby Short, Steve was asked by New York City's Cafe Carlyle to take over their revered Holiday Season of November and December, which Mr. Short had not missed for 36 years. In 2013 Tyrell's contract was extended through his 11th season, starting a new Carlyle legacy that now also includes performances in May.
