NYC: INSPIRED 4 - A BENEFIT CONCERT

INSPIRED is a benefit concert series created and produced by Bobby Cronin, in association with Jessica Kahkoska. The series will play every other month at STAGE 72 (158 West 72nd Street, NYC - 212-362-2590 - ), and include a rotating line-up of musical theatre writers and Broadway performers singing songs that have inspired their work. This month the show is on Monday, March 31st at 7:00 pm. 100% of the ticket sales go directly to two animal welfare organizations across the country. INSPIRED 4 will feature William Demaniow, Kerrigan & Lowdermilk, Leanna Renee Hieber, Timothy Huang, Lyons & Pakchar, Amanda Taraska, and is hosted by Mr. Cronin. The show will benefit the 11th Hour Rescue of NJ and The Low Cost Vet Mobile of NYC. Call for cover/minimum information.

NYC: NEW YORK'S NEXT TOP DRAG QUEEN CONTEST

"New York's Next Top Drag Queen" will be presented at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM(34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - ) on Mondays at 7:00 pm, March 31 & April 14th (8 first-round contestants perform two new songs each week); April 21st (6 semifinalists present mini sets, offering a glimpse of what a full show will be); April 28th (4 finalists sing a new song, a repeat song and a theme song) and May 5th - finale (the 4 finialists sing a new song and make a heartfelt appeal for why they deserve to wear the crown; the finale features several special guests). The event is produced by the Metropolitan Room, Joseph Macchia. The contest's permanent judges include the MAC and Bistro award-winning cabaret producer Joseph Macchia ("Cabaret Cares" and "Broadway on 22nd Street" and "Boys Night Out"), the Broadway veteran and cabaret star T. Oliver Reid (winner 2011 MetroStar; 2012 MAC debut, and 2013 Bistro), and Frankie C. (columnist for Odyssey Magazine). The Mystery Judge will remain "closeted" until the very end. The Grand Prize includes: A Cash Prize of $500 and a One Night Videotaped, Club-Produced Show. There is a $20 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.


NYC: "AN EVENING WITH VIVIAN REED" AT 54 BELOW

54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551 - ) presents "An Evening with Vivian Reed" on Monday, March 31st, at 7:00 pm. After packing the club to the rafters in a quick sellout last November, the multi-award-winning singer, actress and dancer Vivian Reed performs an encore presentation of her passionate and powerful vocal stylings in unique arrangements of an eclectic lineup of R&B, jazz, gospel and musical theater songs. Through selections from her critically acclaimed Broadway performance in Bubbling Brown Sugar, as well as from Three Mo' Divas, her concerts and international nightclub appearances, the two-time Tony Award nominee - who is the recipient of a Drama Desk Award, a Theatre World Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award, among others - pays tribute to the people who have had a profound effect on her career. Reed's high-energy show features: special guests Bertilla Baker, Anastasia Barzee, Janinah Burnett and Luba Mason; background singers Chapman Roberts and Raun Ruffin; and musicians Jason Yarcho (on piano/conductor), Ray Naccari, (on keyboard), Clyde Bullard (on bass), Damon Duewhite (on drums), and Henry Young (on sax). Fred Barton sits in on piano, leading Reed and her special guests in a salute to Harold Arlen, with a preview of songs from One for My Baby, a new musical in progress orchestrated and coauthored by Barton and director/choreographer Scott Thompson. NYC: JARROD SPECTOR RETURNS TO 54 BELOW

Jarrod Spector, who is starring in the new Broadway hit Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, returns to54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551) to celebrate his brand new album "A Little Help From My Friends: Live at 54 BELOW" on Monday, March 31st at 9:30 pm. This acclaimed musical outing traces the legacy of the great male singers whose vocal prowess made them the rock stars of their generations, even before rock was born. After starring as Frankie Valli for six years in Broadway's smash hit musical Jersey Boys, Jarrod wraps his critically-praised voice around the songs that have made superstars out of more than a century of tenor legends from Freddie Mercury and Michael Jackson to the great Enrico Caruso himself. There is a $30-$40 cover plus a $25 food/drink minimum.

NYC: ZI ALIKHAN WITH #LOOKING

#LOOKING, with Zi Alikhan, will be presented at 54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551 - ) on Monday, March 31st at 11:30 pm as part of the club's Late Night series. The show is about the crazy, exciting, IBS-inducing world of being gay in your twenties, looking for love in New York City. Drawing from artists as varied as Betty Who, Cole Porter, and Taylor Swift, Zi Alikhan weaves together first loves, first subway tears, and first Tinder dates in a night that sets out to explore the shitstorm of a path that is #LOOKING for something more in NYC. Featuring Emily Cramer, Hannah Shankman, and Hannah Whitney, this is a night for which you'll want to skip Drag Race. There is a $10 cover plus a $20 food/drink minimum.

NYC: DINE & DANCE WITH VINCE GIORDANO AND THE NIGHTHAWKS - NOW AT THE IGUANA

Vince Giordano & the Nighthawks are back - and now will play every Monday & Tuesday night from 8:00 to 11:00 pm at at IGUANA'S VIP LOUNGE (240 West 54th Street, NYC - 212-765-5454). Vince Giordano & the Nighthawks is an eleven-piece band playing music of the 1920s & 30s for your dining and dancing pleasure. In 1976 Vince Giordano & the Nighthawks (originally known as the New Orleans Nighthawks) was formed. A big-band historian and collector, Giordano has more than 60,000 scores in his collection. There is a $15 cover (at the door) plus a $15 food drink minimum.

NYC: LANCE HORNE PERFORMS SELECTIONS FROM HIS CD AT BIRDLAND

Emmy Award winning composer, musician, vocalist and producer Lance Horne will present a special concert at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080 - ) on Monday, March 31 at 7:00 pm with special guests Alan Cumming, Alice Ripley and Rachel Dratch. This will be Lance's BIRDLAND debut. They will perform songs from Lance's acclaimed CD 'First Things Last' in addition to a special preview of 'The Night Before My Wedding', Horne's upcoming collaboration with Neil Gaiman. Lance will also headline events this spring in Los Angeles and San Francisco. He has contributed a movement to Tyler's Suite, a choral song-cycle dedicated to Tyler Clementi, the 18-year-old Rutgers University student that took his life three years ago. The piece, which also includes contributions from Stephen Schwartz, Ann Hampton Callaway and Craig Carnelia, premiered with the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus on March 25th-26th. NYC: JIM CARUSO'S "CAST PARTY" MONDAYS AT BIRDLANDFEATURED OPEN MIC EVENT

Every Monday night at 9:30 pm, Broadway impresario Jim Caruso hosts "Cast Party", a combination open-mic, networking event and party at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) during which the biggest stars on Broadway relax on their night off by performing their favorite songs in an informal setting. Cast Party is a mix of music, impromptu performance and cocktail party revelry, where showbiz superstars, stunning jazz talents and cabaret glitterati hit the stage alongside up-and-comers to serve up jaw-dropping music and general razzle-dazzle. It's the ultimate spot to mix and mingle with talented show folk and their fans. There is a $20 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: 4TH ANNUAL JAMES MOODY SCHOLARSHIP FOR NEWARK YOUTH BENEFIT CONCERT

On Monday, March 31st at 8:00 pm there will be a special concert atTHE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592 - ) where all proceeds will go towards Moody's foundation, the CFNJ James Moody Jazz Scholarship Fund for Newark Youth. The event features NEA Jazz Master Paquito D'Rivera, clarinet; Musical Director, Renee Rosnes; James Carter, tenor sax; Antonio Hart, alto sax; Mark Gross, sax; Gary Smulyan, bari sax; Andres Boiarsky, sax; Sharel Cassity, sax; Frank Greene, trumpet; Greg Gisbert, trumpet; Freddie Hendrix, trumpet; Bill Charlap, piano; Todd Coolman, bass; John Lee, bass; Adam Nussbaum, drums; Tommy Campbell, drums; with Alexis Cole, vocals. For over six decades, saxophone master James Moody serenaded lovers with his signature song "Moody's Mood for Love," an improvisation on the chord progressions of "I'm in the Mood for Love." Born in Savannah, Georgia on March 26, 1925, and raised in Newark, New Jersey, James Moody took up the alto sax, a gift from his uncle, at the age of 16. Within a few years he fell under the spell of the deeper more full-bodied tenor saxophone after hearing Buddy Tate and Don Byas perform with the Count Basie Band at the Adams Theater in Newark, New Jersey. There is a $35-$65-$100 cover.

NYC: ARUAN ORTIZ QUARTET CD RELEASE HOSTED BY RHONDA HAMILTON

WBGO is proud to partner once again with DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595 - ) on Monday Nights with WBGO. The series features talented new artists as well as groups from some of the area's great college jazz programs. Each performance is hosted by WBGO announcer Rhonda Hamilton. Monday, March 31st will feature the Aruan Ortiz Quartet CD Release show, with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Cuban pianist and composer Aruan Ortiz is a classically trained violist and pianist from Santiago de Cuba. Ortiz portrays his music as an architectural structure of sounds, incorporating contemporary classical music, Afro-Cuban rhythms, and improvisation as primary material for his compositions. His 2013 album Banned In London, a collaboration with bassist Michael Janisch, received critical acclaim and was selected by Downbeat Magazine as one of the best albums of the year. Ortiz is joined by his outstanding bandmates, guitarist Rez Abbasi, bassist Sean Conly, and drummer Gerald Cleaver. Live webcast and artist interview with WBGO host Rhonda Hamilton will begin at 7:15pm EST on jalc.org/live. There is a $30 cover.
