D.C.: THE KENNY GARRETT QUINTET CD RELEASE PARTY

The Kenny Garrett Quintet is playing atBLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Thursday through Sunday, February 6th through 9th, with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. The show celebrates the release of his latest CD: "Pushing the World Away" Over the course of a stellar career that has spanned more than 30 years, saxophonist Kenny Garrett has become the preeminent alto saxophonist of his generation. From his first gig with the Duke Ellington Orchestra (led by Mercer Ellington) through his time spent with musicians such as Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers and Miles Davis, Garrett has always brought a vigorous yet melodic, and truly distinctive, alto saxophone sound to each musical situation. Call for cover/minimum information.

D.C.: ETHNIC HERITAGE ENSEMBLE AT BOHEMIAN CAVERNS

The Ethnic Heritage Ensemble will perform at BOHEMIAN CAVERNS (2001 Eleventh Street N.W., Washington, DC - 202-299-0800) on Sunday, February 9th at 7:00 & 8:30 pm. Formed by Kahil El'Zabar, the band first performed at Child City Arts Center, Chicago in 1973, a year after he had returned from the University of Ghana. His goal was to combine concepts of African American music making with the earlier roots of traditional African music and make it something new. After 35 years, this legendary band is still serving the people worldwide with their special brand of 21st century Griot music. Their music truly feeds the Soul! There is $20 cover.

MARYLAND: SLEEPY LABEEF AT BETHESDA BLUES

Legendary Blues guitarist and vocalist Sleepy Labeef makes his BETHESDA BLUES & JAZZ SUPPER CLUB(7719 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD - 240-330-4500) debut with the Daryl Davis Band on Sunday, February 9th. at 7:30 pm. For half a century, Sleepy LaBeef has lived his life on stages, in honky-tonks, and on the road. He has released records in six different decades and has had chart success as far back as the sixties and as recently as the year 2000. Sleepy LaBeef has shared bills with practically every great in music history: Elvis Presley, George Jones, Roy Orbison, Wanda Jackson, Carl Perkins, has numbered in his band over five hundred people (including the likes of Doug Kershaw, Kenny Rogers, Glen Campbell, D.J. Fontana, and Grady Martin), and has been an admitted influence to such a variety of people as Brian Setzer, Bruce Springsteen, and the Beatles. As significant as his recording career has been, it is the live Sleepy LaBeef that is important. Today, at 76, Sleepy still performs two hundred shows a year, and his live sets are remarkable. There is a $20 cover.
