TONIGHT IN NYC: THE MASTERS QUARTET AT BIRDLAND

TONIGHT IN NYC: THE MASTERS QUARTET AT BIRDLAND

The Masters Quartet: Steve Kuhn, Dave Liebman, Buster Williams & Billy Hart will perform at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, July 23rd through 27th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Four of the leading instrumentalists in jazz come together as "The Masters Quartet." Pianist Steve Kuhn first made his mark as a sideman with John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Chet Baker and Art Farmer. He grew beyond the powerful early influence of Bill Evans to become a unique stylist with an incredible technique and sense of dynamics and lyricism. Saxophonist Dave Liebman, a 2010 "NEA Jazz Master," learned directly from jazz icons, spending extensive periods as a member of groups led by Miles Davis and Elvin Jones. As a leader, Liebman has been associated since 1970 with a succession of extraordinary groups from Open Sky Trio to Lookout Farm to Quest, each of which has framed a distinct phase of his musical evolution. Master bassist Buster Williams is an empathetic sideman known for his subtle sense of swing. He began his professional career in 1960 with saxophonist Jimmy Heath going on to play with jazz legends Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan, Herbie Hancock, Mary Lou Williams, Chet Baker, Dexter Gordon and many others. Legendary drummer Billy Hart has been a fixture on the jazz scene for over fifty years, performing and recording along the way with jazz legends Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, Stan Getz and Miles Davis. There is a $30-$40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
